(More customer reviews)i am very happy with this product. the design and the features are wonderful. my kids can use it anywhere. it comes with car charger, home charger and battery pack. it comes with usb port, sd port and av inputs. it also comes with 2 earphones. i havent had any issues playing any type of cd/dvd. Very good features, very convenient, helps on the long drives keeping my kids occupied.

(More customer reviews)The DVD player was excellent while it was working. Speakers were loud enough for my son to hear in the car on the interstate (albeit at max volume). Screen resolution was better than any other player of its class (size and price). Carrying case offers little padding for the unit, but was not too hard to use as a headrest holder in the car. The headphones were comfortable and made listening in the car much better. And, the adapter cable was a life savor when our home DVD player broke and we needed an instant substitute for the distrought two year old. Great bang for the buck until it broke.
My D1998PK has been exhibiting manufacturing and repair quality problems. After a week of contacting Audiovox warranty repair (actually hung up on one rep who was extremely rude--first time I've ever done that--cross your fingers you get Lisa if you do have to call), I finally was able to get a return label and sent my unit in for repair: one week UPS delivery time. One more week for the "repair" to be made. One more week for UPS delivery back to me. Tried unit: it was actually WORSE than when I sent it out for repair! Not only was original problem not solved, but new problem rendered unit completely useless. How the quality control inspector could pass this repair is beyond me!
Now, I have to wait AGAIN: for a new return label (heaven knows how long this will take!); one week for UPS delivery to Audiovox; one week for new repair (confidence in repairs being very low, I'm really hoping for a replacement this time); and, one week for delivery back to me. One more month without our portable DVD player. I was relieved to get the unit back from the first repair in time for our summer vacation, but now I'm SOL. Not very likely to be buying Audiovox or any related brands again.
The good news: Had I bought the D1988PK model, I would have only had a 90 day warranty and the unit would have become an expensive desktop DVD player (the screen is useless, but hooking it up to an external monitor worked fine until it came back from "repair"). Fortunately, the D1998PK model has a 12 month warranty!

Audiovox D1817PK 8-Inch Portable DVD Player Package System Review

(More customer reviews)I haven't had this machine very long, but have to say that so far I am not too impressed.
I charged up the battery per the instructions and got a video to check it out. if it hadn't had words on the opening screen I might not have noticed how bad the pixilation is, enough I would guess, to make reading the credits impossible. Neither the color nor sharpness are anywhere near as good as on the phillips (which actually costs a bit less), nor is the build quality.
This machine is unusual, in that it has a detachable battery. This *could* be an advantage as it would allow you to carry a spare and double the battery life...BUT it is just about impossible to find the spare/ replacement battery; even audiovox's site doesn't list them (among the dozens they list for other models). It's also worth noting that the way it hangs off the back is kind of clunky and means the machine will need to be treated with more care than many.
I bought this because it had such good (4.5 stars) reviews, but noticed that many are from people who bought this for a toddler or other young child, and may not even have watched it themselves. I bought this for myself, for travel, and am much less impressed.
Last year my son got a coby 10" tablet for the about the same price (actually, $20 less). It is sturdy, compact and has better picture, better build.
I was looking for something smaller (than his 10")...but this isn't- (only the screen). I may be returning this, as for just a few dollars more you can get a better picture & more features, and EVERY other portable dvd player I've seen is more compact. An 8" player should not weigh as much, and take up as much space as a 10".
I'd recommend the coby, phillips and toshiba players over this one (for good bets in this price range).

(More customer reviews)I bought this player for one reason, to play DVDs when I am running on the treadmill. Out of the box, very easy to install, you unwrapp the power cord, plug it to the wall and to the DC input on the unit. slide the POWER switch to ON, push the OPEN button on the player, insert a DVD and it starts playing. For a 9" screen this is a pretty good price, but again do not expect the best quality picture. I would rate the picture as average at best. The sound of the unit is not very powerful, basically I had to either put my headphones on, or just activate the subtitles. The unit is light and the screen opens to 180 which is nice since I don't have to do any taping or velcro-ing to have steady on the treadmill. Again, do not expect a very solidly built unit. But for what I need it does the job.
