(More customer reviews)I was looking forward to getting my Toshiba SD-P101S as I thought it would make a good replacement for my aging SD-P1000. I had figured in the eight years since the SD-P1000 was made, Toshiba would have enhanced and improved upon their portable DVD players.
I was wrong.
It seems as though Toshiba went backwards in terms of features and quality. I'm quite disappointed with this machine.
The good points (give me a few seconds to think of one or two): OK...the screen can be turned from side to side. Also, unlike the older machine, you can do things like fast forward without having to use the remote control. This new machine can also play many disc formats and can handle memory cards for picture viewing.
The bad points (lots to list): While the screen is listed as having a 800x480 resolution, the picture is not as sharp and clear as the older SD-P1000 (and that has a *tiny* screen). The screen has problems towards the bottom. It's hard to describe in words, but it's kind of the same light/dark discoloration you get from an LCD screen when it's got pressure
being put on it. I'd say it's a manufacturing defect, but one I imagine might be inherent to this type of device.
The sound of the external speakers is rather flat and the maximum volume is not very loud (forget about trying to hear this thing if you are in situation where you'd want a portable DVD player). It has two headphone jacks and the volume through them isn't too bad.
The older machine has both component video and S Video outputs. The SD-P101S has neither. What's more, the remote control sensor is on the cover/screen, not the front of the unit. So you need to have the screen open to use the remote control. As a result, this machine cannot really double as a regular player. (Again, a bit more forethought by the
manufacturer would have made its functionality that much better.)
The SD-P101S is also extremely LOUD when it accesses the disc. The first time I used it I thought it was broken. It sounded like gears grinding. I wouldn't recommend using this if people are trying to sleep.
To conclude, this machine seems to be a "Made in China" OEM player that Toshiba merely put its name on. The older SD-P1000 looks to have been developed by Toshiba in house (its "made in Japan" notation would support this theory). I've seen region 2 machines sold here in Japan by other manufacturers with the same design and specs.
For the price, I think you might be able to do better elsewhere. After writing this review, I think I might just get my SD-P1000 serviced and send this one back.

(More customer reviews)Been a Toshiba Portable DVD fan for a number of years. In fact my Toshiba SD-P2600 is still in good working condition!. My next purchase was the SD-P2800 and than finally the incredible SD-P2900 10.2" player. All the Toshiba portables are a good investment!. This latest portable has it all for me: outstanding screen resolution (almost HD quality picture), nice large screen size, speaker fidelity not bad. Plays movie where you left off. The one thing that is truly apparent for me is the detail in the picture quality. Being a 50's sci-fi movie collector I notice detail and contrast I have never seen before from viewing these old movies!!!. To me this says alot. O well one cannot go wrong with this unit.

(More customer reviews)I have purchased Audiovox DVD players before and, to be honest, they have not been problem-free, but nothing bad enough to make me want to throw it in the garbage. I really like the features of this DVD player and works perfectly for my two sons on road trips. It keeps them from driving me crazy and the remote comes in handy so they can both "push the buttons". I recommend the player for price, features and the fact it comes with all the wires, straps and cords you need to hit the road. I didn't give the player 5-stars simply because I don't think Audiovox is the greatest brand ever when it comes to portable DVD players, but they have the best packages for the best price.

The unit does not have a true last scene memory function , but one that is totally useless for resuming a program from where it previously stopped. Why is this done-- cost savings ? Audiovox D1020 10-Inch Portable DVD Player Review

(More customer reviews)This is a preliminary review, just bought the thing, still learning about it, but here goes:
I bought this for the car, but it makes a great little tv at home, too. The screen is much nicer than my friends OEM dvd player, much bigger.
The speakers plug into the sides, not connected by wires. They snap (not too) easily on/off. The FM modulator is a widget on the lighter plug, and you can set it to a variety of stations to get it to come in. It works just fine. One drawback, the video/audio out (fm modulator) uses the same plugs as the IN, you just switch a switch. So this means you can't run the fm modulator and an input (gamecube) at the same time. But the speakers still work, so gamecube can use the ports as an "in" and the sound can then come out the speakers. Ok, I guess.
The thing comes with straps that allow you to suspend it between two seats in the car. But if the seats are tilted, then the screen is tilted. Audiovox should have done some field testing on this. But it's not a huge deal, you can still see it OK. The IR transmitter for the headphones works pretty well, so long as you have a line of sight from the transmitter to the headphones. Headphones are nice, not chintzy (SP?) at all.
The screen is beautiful, the dvd player seems to work really well. Can't comment on longevity, just bought it. The whole thing comes in a case that does not have room for the headphones, but everything else fits nicely. The unit has a prop stand integral on the back, which we can use in our kitchen. It also has a standard cable input, which made it really easy to hook to our home cable system, there's different "input" settings for cable v tv v auxiliary. Tv works really well, too. There's a standard plug for home use. Car use requires the cigarette lighter.
There's a nice protective cover for it that doubles as the "sling" for the car seat thingy. The speakers can pop right onto this, you can do everything but use the integral prop. SO they give you another one that you can attach to this cover via velcro and it works pretty well. Nice touch.
Oh, and the remote is acceptable as well, nothing SUPER fancy, but functional. You can control the tv and the dvd with it.
