When I ordered the Micca Mplay, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I wanted to make this video review so that other Amazon shoppers could see what they're getting. All in all, I do like it and I'm glad I made the purchase. With that being said, it's not a perfect device but it does the job:
Pros:
* The price was reasonable.
* Plays most of the Standard Definition file types (I use it mainly for AVI files)
* Fast startup time.
* Plays MP3s.
* The remote control has been responsive. Great for when you don't feel like getting off the couch.
Cons:
* I've had problems with the fast-forward/rewind features. Once in a while this will actually cause the file to stop playing, which is annoying when you're already 20 minutes into a video.
* It doesn't play High Definition file types. I knew this when I bought it, but it would be a nice feature to have. I would highly recommend this device to anyone who wants to easily play video files on their TV. If you have a High Definition TV, spring for a player that supports high definition files and HDMI.

Brainydeal USB2.0 Slim DVD / CD Burner IDE External Enclosure Caddy Case For Laptop Notebook Review

Brainydeal USB2.0 Slim DVD / CD Burner IDE External Enclosure Caddy Case For Laptop Notebook
Average Reviews:

Bought this to use with a cd burner removed from an old laptop.
The case was about 2 mm too long so it wouldn't snap together so after testing the circuit portion outside of the case I sawed off a small amount of the front plastic to create a perfect fit.
Only other quirk was that the first time plugged in the usb and the power were plugged in at the same time and it didn't work. After moving the usb to another port and NOT plugging in the power until after it started running, it worked. So not sure if it just needed to be on a different usb port or if the combination of plugging in the usb and the power at the same time the first time was a problem.
Good solid case but wouldn't recommend it to someone who isn't used to tinkering with computers.

Philips DVP5992 1080p HDMI Upscaling DVD Player with USB 2.0 and DivX Ultra Review

Philips DVP5992 1080p HDMI Upscaling DVD Player with USB 2.0 and DivX Ultra
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just bought 3 of these 5992/37. There is an easy hack found on the internet to upgrade to play all regions dvd's.
Philips DVP 5992
Region Free:
press Setup
select the Preference Tab
Press 1,3,8,9,3,1
Press up/down key to select "0"
and hit menu to exit.
Prior to this I had a 5982/37 which had 1.1 usb and I had some trouble with avi's at high bitrate through the USB 1.1 port but the 2.0 on the 5992 fixed that. Both players play divx (avi) files but the major upgrades to the 5992 are USB 2.0, plays wmv files, now has 14 characters for files on hard drive or memory stick, you can rip music from cd to hard drive in mp format, you can play vob through the usb. The remote is much improved over the 5982 as well. In summary this is a great deal if you need a player that does a good job upconverting to 1080p, supports divx (avi), wmv and has usb 2.0 for connecting a hard drive or memory stick (must be fat 32 - for drives over 32 gb there are several utilities for doing this such as awissknife or fat32.exe - I have a 1 TB WD connected to mine). Also, to sort the fat32 files alphabetically by name there is a freeware FolderSort.exe which you can download to keep your folders and files alphabetically when you play the HD through the USB. The DVD player reads the folders/files in order they were loaded so for convenience you can sort them yourself with FolderSort. Bought mine for $39.99.
There are additional firmware upghrades by a developer Vb6rocod which makes some great changes to the setup options and screens. For example itlets you see file characters much longer than the standard Philips release (at first it was 40 characters from a cd/dvd then upgraded furtherto the length of the bar on the scree; the files through the usb are limited to either 21 or 23 which is a nice improvement), adds font choices to subtitels, colors to subtitles and some other fixes. You can download through rapidshare. See links at http://ryan.com.br/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=1074;sa=showPosts OR http://www.forodvp5100.com.ar/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=1458&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=60 OR http://forum.videohelp.com/topic355675.html#1881495. Many users like these improvements. I tried the firmware upgrade and it is very nice.

Pioneer DV 600AV-S - DVD player - upscaling - silver Review

Pioneer DV 600AV-S - DVD player - upscaling - silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rly happy with this product, bought it few months back since I've read that the Panasonic has pb the best upscaling quality on the market and the DV-400 or DV-410 were not that available.
And I am impressed with it. It is basically an DVD player that is region free and does a damn good job at upscaling (tried some media centers and a laptop w/ HDMI output - the DV-600 is definitely better).
Also of the reasons for which I choose the DV-600 is tha optical output that was no longer available w/ the DV-410 model. I know that there should be no difference between digital coax and optical but I had problems w/ coax in the past.
Another extra feature that the 600 series have is sound virtualisation: it'll make even a simple stereo AVI sound more or less 5.1, while also providing some advanced settings for the speakers.
so, highly recommended, great value for the money.

Pioneer AVIC-U310BT 4.3-Inch In-Dash Navigation Receiver with CD Player and Bluetooth Review

Pioneer AVIC-U310BT 4.3-Inch In-Dash Navigation Receiver with CD Player and Bluetooth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The boss (Wife) had the stock 6 CD changer in her 2006 Explorer XLT. She wanted a new radio that would allow her to listen to her iPod and have Bluetooth for her phone. I also wanted to add GPS, since if I was going to replace the darn thing, I may as well give her all the functions she might need for the future.
I looked online for a new head unit but it seemed that all the units were in the above $500 range. I saw that Amazon had the Pioneer AVIC-U310BT on sale for $259.00. I did some research and found a mixed bag of reviews, for every good review, there was a not so good one. After a bit of thinking, I decided to bite. I'm glad I did.
I bought the head unit along with the PAC Can Bus module05-08 FORD RADIO CAN BUS MODULE INTERFACEand the Scosche Scosche FD1426B Double ISO DIN Kit for 2004-Up Fordmounting kit. The harness was about $80 and the mounting kit another $15. If you look at a lot of the head units out there, they offer Bluetooth as an option, not include it with as with this radio. That would have added another $100 to many of the competitors out there.
I opened up all the parts I bought and read all the documentation on all the items BEFORE I went outside. I prewired the Pac module, connecting all the wires to the wiring harness from the radio. This made it easy when I went out to the truck. Plug and play, the only wiring I need to do was routing all the wires for the microphone, GPS antenna and the Aux output wire for her Sirius radio.
About that Sirius, Pioneer offers the built in module for Sirius or XM. Both cost $100 and you have to find a place for the big Sirius modules under the dash. They don't offer some of the features the little Plug and Play units Sirius offers; pause, FF, and favorite song or artist reminders. We decided to keep her existing Sportster 5 and plug it into the Aux port.
I got it all installed in about 90 minutes. I placed the GPS antenna under the top tray on the dashboard. The antenna sees right through the plastic tray, and stays hidden. The iPod cable is simply the USB cable that came with the iPod. You can buy the cable from Pioneer for about $40. I don't see the need, as it works fine with the Apple cable. I put the iPod in the glove box, as you don't need to access it, all the controls can be reached from the head unit.
The sound from the radio is great. The GPS navigation seems to be good, but I can tell you more as we use it in real world driving. Some people have said that they had issues with Bluetooth not connecting consistently. I started and turned off the truck about 20 times so far, and each time it finds and connects to my iPhone....no issues at all. The sound quality of the included microphone seems good, so far. Again, we will see how it goes in real world driving conditions.
Overall, it isn't as neat as the $500-$1000 dollar head units out there, the screen is not as big, and it may not have all the features of its higher priced cousins. But to have GPS, CD, iPod and Bluetooth for about $350 total, it cannot be beat.
Edit 4/27/10 After a week of use:
Wanted to add a few items on the use of this system. First, some have complained about the quality of the microphone that is supplied with the unit. For us, it works well. I have been involved in both ends of phone conversations as both the sender from the truck, or as a reciever of a call from the truck. Both come in loud and clear. Perhaps other people had issue with the location of the microphone? We clipped it directly to the driver's visor.
Sound quality is fantastic. This head unit really takes advantage of the factory sub woofer in the Explorer. We never heard such powerful bass from the stock unit.
The iPod control takes a little getting used to, but once you figure it out, it works well. My wife has simply put the iPod on random from the head unit controls. It is like a juke box with thousands of songs.....it is playing songs we long ago forgotten that were on the iPod.
GPS navigation has been fine. Sure, not a lot of POI's, but we simply enter in addresses. For my wife, it is no big deal.
Using the PAC Sys can bus module made the wiring easy. The system knows when the truck is moving, it knows to dim the display when the headlights go on, etc. It is just like a factory installation.
Overall, we are still happy with the purchase.

Western Digital My Passport Elite 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Titanium) Review

Western Digital My Passport Elite 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Titanium)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The main difference between the WD Passport Elite and the slightly cheaper Passport Essential is in the pre-loaded software. Both versions include sync and encryption software, but only the Passport Elite comes with the "WD Anywhere" automatic backup software. However, if your main reason for buying the Passport Elite is to use it as a data backup drive for your PC, you better think twice - details on that later. What's so excellent about the hardware?
SIZE: The drive is so compact and light, it can fit in my shirt pocket easily.
CONNECTION: Just a simple USB cable takes care of both power and data. The provided cable is only 15 inches long, but I have tried a generic 30-inch USB cable and it works just fine.
SPEED: I benchmarked the data transfer rate to be 30MB/s for writing large files. This is about as good as it can get for a 5400RPM hard drive connected through USB 2.0.
NOISE: What noise? I have to put my ear right on the hard drive, in order to heard a faint sound during read/write.What's not so hot about the WD Anywhere backup software?
Initially, the WD Anywhere software appears to be a 30-day trial version. It turns out that on-line registration is required to activate the full version. Fair enough, except that my virus protection program blocked this software from accessing the Internet. So I have to temporarily suspend the virus protection in order to register.
Next, I started to backup selected directories on my PC. The software seems to get 'stuck' after transferring just a few GB of data. It would consume over 60% of my computer's CPU power, yet the files are just crawling along. I restarted the process a few times, but the results are the same. Finally, I downloaded the latest WD Anywhere Backup version 3.50, and it doesn't hang up anymore. However, there are still problems when using this automatic backup software.
Suppose I transfer some image files from my camera to my PC, while the portable hard drive is not connected. WD Anywhere will queue-up those files for backup later, once the drive is connected. The problem is: if I rename/edit those files in the mean time, WD Anywhere is not smart enough to update its queue accordingly. So it will try unsuccessfully to backup those old files, and it will NOT backup those new files I have edited. It is ironic that the backup software for a PORTABLE hard drive requires the drive to be connected all the time. I have yet to find a way to force the software to rescan my directory and look for new files to backup. It is easier for me to just copy the whole directory manually.
The bottom line is, WD Passport Elite is still an excellent USB hard drive. Just remember that you cannot rely on WD Anywhere to backup all your files automatically.
[Update on April 4th]
Thanks to suggestion by William E. Merkley II, I downloaded a free program called 'SyncToy' (part of the Microsoft PowerToys suite). It works exactly the way I want to backup my photo files. I have already deleted the WD Anywhere backup program and will only use SyncToy from now on.
[Update on May 25th, 2009]
I tried using this hard drive connecetd to the USB port of my Philips DVP5990 DVD Player. The DVD player can detect there is an USB device connected, but it cannot read anything from the device. I think the fault is with the USB port of this player. It seems unable to supply the 500mA current required, therefore the hard drive cannot spin up. For this application, I need to get an USB hard drive with its own power supply instead.

Kenwood Excelon KDC-X494 In-Dash CD/MP3/WMA/iPod Receiver with USB/Aux Input Review

Kenwood Excelon KDC-X494 In-Dash CD/MP3/WMA/iPod Receiver with USB/Aux Input
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used to install car stereos for 6 years and this is the best, hands down, bargain for the quality and performance.
Pre-amp outputs are front, rear and sub rated at 4 volts each. This is -perfect-
Has an Auxillary 35mm(1/8 inch) plug for any audio playing device you could think of; it has a USB port on the front and beyond the Crabapple iPod you can use a USB flashdrive. I opt for the flash drive with 8 gigabytes rather than anything else.
CD Play is perfect and skip free and capable of "forcing" the player to read those aweful CDs that are scratched beyond belief.
I have read and heard numerous complaints of the complexity of the owner's manual but I shall report that it pales in complexity to any home stereo reciever manual. You basically use ONE KNOB which lets you keep your eyes on the road as you turn up or turn down the volumne, change the song, change the USB music folder, change the equalizer, change the high/low/subwoofer pass filters and MORE with ONE KNOB! Remote control also included in case you just want to lay back and not move your arm nor lean forward with an abcrunch to adjust anything.
For the money, for the features and for the quality you need to buy this and get your friends to buy one themselves.

Front-Panel USB Port Plug in a thumb drive or other USB storage device for playback of your favorite MP3/WMA files, with easy folder navigation. The port will also charge portable devices, and offers control of some music phones via the receiver.
Direct iPod Control The eXcelon series is as iPod-friendly as it gets. Enjoy direct control of your device, along with great features such as:
Advanced Control Wheel and High-speed Search Bar Key The grip control knob is similar to that of an iPod, making operation familiar for iPod owners. Whats more, the high-speed search bar key allows users to scroll up or down through music files. In addition the search function works for iPods, USB mass storage and Data CDs.
My PlaylistMy Playlist allows you to create a playlist of up to ten songs from an iPod connected to an eXcelon receiver. The playlist is created by using the unique ID allocated for each song stored on an iPod.
Search FunctionsSimply press the Direct Search key and enter the Search Mode to enable searching just by entering the first three letters of the playlist, artist, album, song, podcast, genre or composer and using the up/down key to get a list of songs. It is also possible to search using Alphabet Search, Skip Search and Related Search functions.

Front Auxiliary Input Listen to external audio devices like MP3 players using the front auxiliary input. The USB port and Aux input are both illuminated, and kept safe from dust when not in use with a sliding cover.

Serious Room To Grow The KDC-X494 is ready for you to add Kenwood components for SAT/HD radio, Bluetooth, or a CD changer.
It's also ready for system building. While the built-in 50W x 4 MOSFET amp is plenty powerful, it also features three 4V preamp outputs (front, rear, subwoofer) for adding external amps and speakers. It includes a rear/subwoofer switch with a subwoofer level and adjustable low pass filter, so you can send just what you need for your system.
System E's+ Crossover System A single IC that allows the user to select from 8 different high-pass filter crossover frequencies plus pass-through, with independent selection for front and rear outputs. This makes it easy to optimize the performance of all amps and speakers in a car audio system without needing an external electronic crossover. The preset curves include midrange contouring, giving music more clarity and presence. System Q EX allows the user to modify the preset curves by changing the amplitude of the bass, midrange and treble compensation, and the Q of the bass and midrange compensation. Plextor 6X Ext USB Bd Combo Review

Plextor 6X Ext USB Bd Combo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There seem to be plenty of (expensive!) BD burners on the market but I have no need for that - I'm looking to *eliminate* disks from my life, not create more! I was simply looking for a good cost-effective external Blu-Ray player.
After a great deal of research (PS lots of *internal* units, few external), I went with this unit and have been very happy.
It attaches via USB to my Mac Mini which uses BootCamp to run both Mac OS and Windows 7. The Plextor drive is compatible with both environments. Under Windows, I use the included PowerDVD Ultra software for Blu-Ray playback; under MacOS, I use MakeMKV (free!) to backup my Blu-Ray collection to .mkv files which I then catalog and access via the Plex (free!) mediacenter software.
Very happy with my setup, I recommend this unit highly. Looks great as well!

Blu-ray Player External USB Laptop CD/DVD RW Burner Combo Drive (Black) Review

Blu-ray Player External USB Laptop CD/DVD RW Burner Combo Drive (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was planning to play Blu Ray movies with this drive. I couldn't care less about the DVD burning feature, I was only looking at playing movies. First (and as is normal with other drives) you need to buy a software player, so plan on spending %59 to $100 for a blu ray software player such as WinDVD, PowerDVD or MediaTheater. Second, and this was the hard part, the drive didn't came with the latest firmware, and the Phillips reference did not help at all.
1) This drive doesn't state what brand it is
2) You will not be able to find references in Google that point to a firmware update
3) No reviews or places to learn about the firmware issues for this model
Anyway, it's a Lite On drive, and while the drive is not listed there's an utility that is able to detect the drive, check for the latest firmware, update the firmware automatically (and check for upgrades from time to time)[...]
If I didn't find the firmware, I'd have rated it at two stars, for being able to read and burn DVD and one extra for being able to work with data blu ray disks. As it is now, it works flawlessly, yet it's 4 stars for the immense hassle that was finding and updating the firmware. Beware, under Windows 7, when you first run the program, it will not work. But if you close the program, Windows 7 will detect it did not install correctly, and do some changes. The next time you run the SmartPack, it will work and actually upgrade the firmware (at your own risk).

NAXA NX-250 Portable AM FM Radio USB Port MP3 CD Player Boombox Stereo Review

NAXA NX-250 Portable AM FM Radio USB Port MP3 CD Player Boombox Stereo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With the ability to play mp3-cd, usb flash drives, and SD cards, you can't expect to pay any less for this unit being at only about $40. Anything cheaper and your looking at tiny radios that can't put out any volume and have very limited features.
Pros:
-several inputs provide plenty of options
-radio reception is phenomenal, tons of stations and alot of them come in crystal clear
-button layout is simple and easy to use
-very portable, only about 14" long x 6" high x 8" deep and maybe 4-5 lbs without batteries
-lcd screen lights up with a nice blue display
-has an AUX-in for whatever that can be used for
Cons:
-battery compartment is a bit tight so its a bit of a pain in the butt getting batteries in and out if you do this frequently
-metal screen that covers speakers sticks out a bit to much and makes it too easy to dent the screen if the unit is hit
-the 2 slider buttons that switch the unit between cd/radio/usb etc and Am/FM/stereo are kinda cheap and its best to try and minimize the number of times you handle these buttons. The buttons work ok but they definately have a cheap feel to them.
-bass is a joke
-only moderately loud and only the "jazz" and maybe the "normal" presets provide decent sound and minimal distortion on maximum volume
-radio tuning is analog (which many people prefer digital)
-the +10
I wrote more more cons then pros but I think alot of the cons are just being picky and also alot of them are easy to live with. If less then maybe $60 and considering the features it has I would probably purchase this unit again.

GPX BD707B Portable DVD/CD Player with 7-Inch LCD Screen for Movies and Karaoke (Black)

I LOVE this GPX BD707B Portable DVD Boom Box! (title on Amazon is incorrect)
It is very well made (not a light cheap boom box) , very fun and easy to use. The bass on this item is AWESOME, the sound quality is surprisingly fantastic for a boom box - the best one I've ever heard with such great sound quality.

The radio tuner is very nice with AM/FM/FM Stereo. The stations come in very well and I haven't had to even use the antenna on it yet.

I have twin boys and they LOVE how they can BOTH sing along with a few Karaoke CD's we have while using the mics (this system has TWO mic jacks and you can also easily adjust the mic level). This works fantastic with the Region 1 and Region 2 DVD's (PAL and NTSC)that we own. To access the settings (brightness, contrast, aspect ratio etc.) you can use the MENU button on the the boombox or with the supplied remote.
Although it does not have an Aux. in jack or an SD card slot, I was able to connect my MP3/MP4 player that has an SD card with MP3's in a folder. I just connected it up with a USB cable to this boombox and it works great! It found the AUDIO folder right off and played the MP3's. This item also works with MP3's on CD's, as well as MP3's on my USB Flash drives. This connects up very nicely with my camcorders and TV too.
This will be fun to have on the patio, at a family BBQ, at picnics, or where ever you'd take a boom box to. AND this one also PLAYS DVD's as well as gives you access to your camcorder to view on the 7 inch screen.
This is the best boom box I've ever had. We love it tremendously!

Pioneer AVIC-N2 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor and radio Review

Pioneer AVIC-N2 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor and radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this item a few days ago and installed it myself. Let me start with a whole-hearted I LOVE IT!
Ok, details.
The Installation
I am not new to car stereo installs, and I thought this install was pretty easy, if longer than most. But then, there's about 5 times as much to set up, so no surprise there. I am assuming you know how to snake wires/cables all throughout your vehicle, from the battery under the hood to under your seats to the white reverse lights on the back of your car. If you've got that down, the hardest part is really just figuring out which wire on your ECU is the vehicle speed-pulse line. Other than that, it's all just busy work; a splice here, a t-tap there, and you're done!
It are a *lot* of wires, though. (Hey, what did you expect?) :)
The Video
Amazingly enough, it's visible in daylight, only becoming unwatchable in direct sunlight! The screen's display is adjustable enough such that it can be viewed in nearly any angle, and the "Wide" button even allows you to select a "zoom" level such that any movie you own will use as much (or little) of the screen as you want.
The Audio
While not as customizable or pro-audio as my last deck, the Pioneer DEH-960MP, I actually like the sound out of this one better. I still have a little tuning to do on my amps for the mids and lows, but the highs are much crisper than I could ever get out of my last deck.
The Navigation
I have no basis for comparison, but after playing with this thing for an hour or so, I had it all down pat; it's pretty easy and intuitive. As far as usefulness, well, it's gotten me around areas I already know very well with plenty of skill, so I'm confident that when I try to navigate someplace I don't know that I will be just fine.
Gripes
The intelligence of the unit in figuring out if you're moving or not is too good. I've heard about and think I like the AVIC-N1's relatively dumb parking-brake sensor better. I know it's illegal (and really just plain dumb) to watch a DVD while driving. But what about my passengers? I have the self-control to just not look at the screen, but now I don't even have that choice; the AVIC-N2 watches the speed (and, I'm thinking, its accelerometers, too) to know when I'm moving, and it blacks out the A/V, no matter how much little Billy was enjoying "The Incredibles."
(Here's a hint, though; plug the rear-display video output that's meant for an extra LCD mounted in the back seat into the rear camera video input. Then whenever you want to see a video up front while the vehicle is in motion, just view the rear-camera. Granted, it's squished to plain-old TV 4:3 because the nav map snippet still shows on the left, but it's better than nothing!)
Also, the IP-Bus is pretty much useless for some older components. Verify that any IP-Bus components you want to buy work with the AVIC-N2 before buying them! I had a Delphi XM tuner installed in my car and hooked up to my Pioner DEH-960MP and it worked wonderfully. On the AVIC-N2, I could get the audio over the IP-Bus via the "Aux" source, but I have no controls... I don't know about you, but having my XM Radio stuck on Channel 53 for the rest of eternity isn't acceptable. The newer XM tuners from Pioneer do work, though; I also bought their XM NavTraffic tuner. It hasn't arrived yet, but I'm willing to bet that it works and will be very, very cool.
Overall
This thing has got a coolness factor of, well... let me put it this way: After getting all this installed (I have an iPod and a PS2 hooked up to it, too... ) I have decided that I'm just plain the coolest person I know.
Party in my car, you're invited... :D

Average Reviews:

I've had this drive for a month or so now, and I use it back and forth between home (windows vista) and school (macintosh Leopard). I'm very happy with it overall. It offers a lot of storage at a very affordable price. The drive is also very convenient to use. It is so small that it fits easily in a bag or even a jacket pocket. Not having to worry about a separate power cord (it gets its power from the usb port) is also really nice. The drive is also very quiet. It has worked flawlessly so far. The only drawback that I see with this drive is the speed. It takes an awfully long time to transfer files between the drive and the computer that it is attached to. For this reason, when I need to use it for video I generally transfer the files to the main computer hard drive and work on it there, then transfer it back to this drive for storage. All in all though, this drive has exceeded my expectations.

We bought this for our son who wanted to be able to watch DVD's, and it works fine. 2 critiques
1) The switch to turn the screen on and off seemed like an after thought as it is placed on the back of the unit, whereas all other controls are on the top.
2) It would have been AWESOME for this unit to play the video from his ipod on the 5" screen, but it will not. The USB does not support that option and the unit does not support video input. What a shame.

Tekkeon TekCharge Mobile Power and Battery Charger Review

Tekkeon TekCharge Mobile Power and Battery Charger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using this for several months, and more than once it has paid for itself. It is small, lightweight, and has done everything I need it to.
I get several full phone recharges out of a set of four AA batteries, as compared to about one 85% charge from the Eveready? Energizer? Energi To Go™ Instant Cell Phone Chargers charger (although I suspect that the energizer was eating my batteries if I left them in there for more than a day.)
This unit does not discharge batteries no longer how long you leave them in there, so pairing it up with low self-discharge batteries is beneficial. You'll forget you have it until you need it!VIDEO REVIEW TRANSCRIPT:
This is the TekCharge MP1550 mobile power supply and battery charger. This unit allows you to transfer power from standard AA batteries to USB power, and also will allow you to charge rechargeable AA batteries From USB power in an emergency.
This allows you to carry emergency power for cellphones, mp3 players, or anything else which can be charged from a USB port or cable. The maximum output voltage is 5v. You can use either standard alkaline AAs, or use rechargeables to power the unit.
The device is very small and compact, only a little larger than the batteries it contains.
The device comes with a charging cable and several interchangeable tips. The retractable cable on mine arrived frayed to the point where I don't think I could depend on it to work when I need it to. You can see the stray wires poking out from the wire sheath. I could have returned the unit, but I've never had good luck with "one size fits all" cables, and therefore probably wouldn't use it anyway. I bought the cables I need from my favorite auction website. For me, a six inch USB to mini-USB cable will do 85% of what I bought the unit for. A Standard USB A to B cable will do everything else.
The unit outputs power through a standard 5V USB plug. Any device I can think of with a USB charger can be plugged in and receive power through this port. There is an "ON/OFF" switch next to the plug, which controls whether a device is receiving power. There are also several indicator lights on the front of the unit which show how much power is left in the batteries.
The unit will run off of either 2 or 4 AA batteries. I would recommend using four whenever possible, as the lower discharge rate on each battery will mean you get more total power from each cell, as compared to using two at a time. However, it is nice to know that if I need to scavenge two batteries from the charger in an emergency, I will still be able to recharge my phone using the other two cells.
Beside the output USB Jack is a mini-USB Jack labeled "5V in". This is the jack which you can use to charge rechargeable batteries without removing them from the unit. The manual states that the unit will fully charge two batteries in three hours, or four batteries in six hours. It also strongly recommends to recharge batteries only when they are completely empty, so the charging function shouldn't be used to "top off" batteries which are only partially discharged.
I use low-self-discharge batteries, and use a separate Lacrosse BC-900 series charger to keep my batteries well maintained.
The Tekcharge unit does not appear to drain the batteries when it is not in use, which the "energizer" brand AA recharger seemed to do. Also, I get more power out of each cell as a result of the lower discharge rate associated with drawing the power from four cells instead of two. The battery compartment is also much easier to open than the energizer model, which often got stuck or jammed. However, to open the battery compartment you have to push down on the lever next to the USB jack. This is not indicated on the unit, although the manual does clearly state it.
Overall, I am extremely pleased with this unit. It does exactly what it advertised, and feels well built. Again, the cable arrived frayed from the factory, but I would have thrown it away even if it was in good condition. However, for those who prefer playing with interchangeable heads, it would have been an issue. I am pretty confident that it was an isolated problem, and I'll bet customer service would have replaced it had I felt the need to contact them over it.
I keep this unit in my backpack, and it's nice to know that I have two weeks or more of power for my cell phone if I get stuck somewhere without my charger, along with a means of recharging batteries away from home.
