Sony D-CJ500 Portable CD/MP3 Player Review

Sony D-CJ500 Portable CD/MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

This is my third CD-MP3 player and my favorite by a long shot. I have also owned a Philips Expanium EXP103 and a Pine D'Music SM200C. This Sony has the fit and finish of the Philips device, but the ID3 tag support of the Pine device.
Pros:
* Battery life. Sony claims 24 hours. I only use it for 4-6 hours at a time and in doing so I've only depleted 25% of the battery so it seems about right.
* FAST startup. It is about 10 seconds from the time you put the CD in to the time it actually starts playing. Usually MP3-CD players with ID3 tag support take much much longer.
* Great ID3 tag support. You can view the title, artist, and album information.
* Folder navigation (and shows the names of the folders as you are navigating)
* Fantastic anti-skip protection. I was unable to get it to skip without doing something that might actually damage the unit. For MP3s it actually reads the current MP3 into memory and stops spinning the CD. For the most part the CD is not spinning when you play MP3s. I assume this is how they get such long battery life.
* Good repeat options for CDs and MP3s (on MP3s you can repeat just the current folder)
* Intuitive controls
* Size: slim and very light
Cons:
* No "line out" jack (not a big deal for me, but it is for some)
* No backlight for display
* Size: while it is slim it is somewhat longer than the smaller Sony CD Walkmans. It is still smaller than the Philips and Pine players I had.
* Sort of cheap looking, especially the bottom of the unit. Since nobody sees the bottom there's no big deal. For me this is a bonus since I spend a lot of time listing in the airport. If it looks cheap nobody will want to steal it. It's not cheaply made, but it doesn't have the "cool" factor that some of the other Sony CD Walkman products have.

Sony DEJ011 CD Walkman? Portable CD Player Review

Sony DEJ011 CD Walkman? Portable CD Player

This is one of the best CD players I've used. I listen to a lot of Books on Tape and this player picks up exactly where you leave off even if you stop it to do something else for awhile. It's fairly good about playing scratched CDs and has not jumped while I have been working out in the yard or walking with it. The ear phones are OK but get bit irritating after wearing them for a time. If you are looking for a good CD portable player without the radio, this is it. It is pretty light on battery use also.

Sony DE441 Discman Review

Sony DE441 Discman
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Discman from Amazon a couple weeks ago as a birthday gift for my mother. I liked the price and it seemed to be of good quality. Once the Discman arrived, I presented it to my mother during a trip to the beach and I ended up listening to it for several hours throughout the trip.
First off, I really liked the headphones. They were very comfortable and gave off good sound. Next, I found that the Discman had many useful features. The ESP was wonderful--it would not skip even when I tried to make it skip. I listened to it for about two hours of driving in a car, with it sitting on the seat, and it did not skip once. I even knocked on the top of it a couple times, gave it a few good jolts, to see if it would skip and it didn't even stutter.
I also really liked the resume feature. If you turn the CD off in the middle of a song and leave that same CD in, then when you turn it back on, it will start up exactly where you left off. Not mindblowing, but nifty and somewhat handy.
All in all, I found the Discman to be a great buy. (And my mom has come to love it as well, as soon as I actually let her use it.) The ESP is top quality, the sound is good, there are plenty of features, the headphones are comfortable, and the price is definitely right. Highly recommended.

RCA RP3013 Personal CD Player with FM Radio Review

RCA RP3013 Personal CD Player with FM Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After looking at the star ratings and comments for various CD players online, and finding most nothing to brag about, I wandered down to a local store and bought the RCA model RP3013 because it was good looking, had great controls, was cheap enough, and it was an RCA. I also liked having an FM tuner. It comes with earbuds, but I just plugged in a set of my Sennheisers....I'm a traditionalist.
After using it for a week, I am more than happy with my choice.
First, the LCD is on top and easy to read. The buttons for play/pause, stop/off, eq, program, forward and back are also on top of the unit in the form of individual buttons in a semi-circle, very straightforward. Two AA's inside, under a cover....easy to install, unless you have sausage links for fingers. Sound is fine, but not the same as you'd expect from your iPod. Better than I expected however, and yes, I also own a large capacity iPod. The FM radio brings in my stations quite well, with an ST indicator to hone in on the best frequency.

Only negative, it has a wheel for volume, and another wheel for radio station selection, although the selected station is visible in the LCD window. I would have preferred electronic volume and tuning buttons. Kind of a surprising omission, but I can live with it. Just not crazy about wheels. Kind of 80's technology.
Anyhow, overall, very intuitive controls, good sound, decent battery life, a good purchase.

Panasonic SL-CT800 Ultra Thin Portable CD Player Review

Panasonic SL-CT800 Ultra Thin Portable CD Player
Average Reviews:

The SL-CT800 is an amazing CD player. Not only is it thin and attractive, but it also has an amzong battery life: up to 120 hrs (unheard of typically for MP3 CD Players). It works very well. The only problem I've had with it is that, unlike iRiver's SlimX 400, the LCD doesn't show international characters (i.e., letters from other languages, like the French "é" or the Spanish "ñ", or Russian Cyrillic, etc.). That's not a major problem though, and does not lessen the overall prestige of this amazing device. A definite A+++!

Panasonic's ultra-slim, MP3- and WMA-friendly SL-CT800 CD player offers the convenience of pocket-slim sizing, remote control operation, and a staggering 80 hours of MP3/WMA file playback. The player's No Skip technology combines rubber, shock-absorbing brushings and an anti-skip digital servo with 48-second memory reserve (100 seconds for MP3) for added back up.Panasonic's Power Last system uses a highly efficient motor with low-load circuitry for drastically improved playback time, helping the player derive up to 120 hours of MP3 file playback from two supplied Ni-MH rechargeable batteries in conjunction with two standard AA batteries (not supplied) in the included (and optional, for general operation) external battery case. This unit's AC adapter uses a magnet to make it easier than traditional adapters to connect and disconnect. Once the magnetic connector is inserted into the adapter, connections and disconnects are effortless. (You may also connect in the conventional way without using the magnet adapter.)A hold function activated from the supplied wired remote control prevents unintended interruptions in playback and saves batteries by negating playback when the player is stopped. You can set it to lock the player, the remote control, or both. The SL-CT800's digital-to-analog converter is Panasonic's single-bit MASH (multi-stage noise shaping technology) DAC, designed to virtually eliminate distortion and deliver all the subtleties and nuances that make digital recordings so rich.Playback options include 20-track programming, repeat (track or disc), and random play. With the player's moving-light key illumination, the buttons on the side of the unit change color and light up in different sequences, showing both the mode of operation and the remaining battery life. What's in the Box CD player, stereo earbud headphones, wired remote control, external battery pack with two Ni-MHrechargeable batteries, user's manual, and an AC power adapter with magnetic connector.

Sony D-FJ61 Portable CD Player Review

This summer, I was telling my eleven-year old niece that it would be nice to have a cd and fm walkman in one. She looked at me like I was so out of it and told me it already existed.
Well, you know Sony would be responsible! I absolutely love my walkman!! I have owned several models over the years and the more Sony builds, the better they become. This model does not skip at all and mine has been through the gym and on hikes! When you get tired of the disc, you just switch over to the tuner. You have the option to program stations (not a new feature of course) and they come in crystal clear. I just love the option, especially when you are planning on extended use.
Very durable as usual and a nice strap to slip over your hand for easy/secure handling.
Sony equates quality!

Panasonic SL-MP70 Portable CD/MP3 Player Review

Panasonic SL-MP70 Portable CD/MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This inexpensive portable CD player from Panasonic combines an excellent basic CD discman with MP3 capabilities. You can play regular CD's and CD-R or CD-RW discs burned with audio CD content (i.e., "CD-DA" Compact Disc Digital Audio format), just like any CD player. When playing CD's it has two anti-skip modes, one 10-second and the other 45-second. The single sheet of user's guide says the 10-second memory mode gives better sound quality. There are two EQ settings in addition to the plain "none" level: XBS and "Live". As you would expect, as a CD discman the SL-MP70 delights with its light weight and good looks.
But you can also play MP3 files burned onto CD-R or CD-RW discs. You can burn MP3 files to CD-R/RW discs in two ways: use a program like Windows Media Player or iTunes to convert MP3 back to CD-DA, and burn the disc as an audio CD. Then what you get is exactly a regular audio CD. Or, to save time and effort -- and remember that since MP3 is a lossy format, converting an MP3 file back to CD-DA does not improve the audio quality, i.e., "garbage in, garbage out" -- you can simply drag and drop the MP3 files to a CD-R or CD-RW disc and burn them. When viewed in Windows, the CD-R/RW looks like a regular folder with the MP3 files. Then you can play these files on the SL-MP70. The player recognizes the files gracefully. (The slightly more expensive SL-MP80 model can also play WMA files -- that's Windows Media Audio format, developed by Microsoft.)
Unlike another, cheaper Panasonic discman, this one can display MP3 tags, basically information embedded in each MP3 file that has the track name, album name, artist name, etc. The SL-MP70 displays the track name and album name if they are available. If you download music in the MP3 format, chances are the guy who ripped it already put in the tags, also known as "ID3." If not, you can use a program like Music Match to edit the tags yourself.
Note that, if you buy music Apple iTunes-style from sites like Walmart and Music Match, they only sell the music in the WMA format, not MP3, so you'd need the SL-MP80 player to play them.
Some other observations:
Good - the player remembers the last track or MP3 file you played, so when you turn it back on, it resumes from the point it left off. I don't think you can turn this off with this model.
Puzzling - you cannot fast search within an MP3 track, although you can do so within an audio CD track. This is not a problem unless you are like me and carry audio books encoded in MP3. These books tend to have chapters that last more than 15 minutes. Luckily for me, my commute is 1 hour each way, so I have no problem with this. Also, most music MP3 tracks are no more than 4 minutes, so this shouldn't be a major problem.
Good - Long battery life. I run this off 2 AA NiMH batteries (1800 mAh each) and I've run on the same set for over 20 hours of play and I still see three full bars on the battery indicator. And yes, the battery indicator has three bars and goes to none when the batteries are near exhaustion. This is really energy efficient, and is one thing that sets this apart from the cheaper/lesser-brand products from Classic, Samsung, Memorex, iriver, etc.
Could be better - more volume for those nearly hearing-impaired thanks to their 24x7 listening on earphones habit, easier to get to the last of 1000 MP3 files (as if you'd do that often), backlighting (but that'd surely raise the price), remote control (ditto). Really, for this price, I think we are already getting a lot of bang for the buck, and the build quality of Panasonic players is just top-notch. And no, I don't work for Panasonic or any of its agents or distributors, and nobody in my family or circle of friends does, either!
Tip - to get around the "press forward 99 times to get to the 100th song or 999 times to get to the 1000th song" problem, put a dozen songs in each folder. The Panasonic automatically designates each folder an album, and you can skip to the next album by holding down the fast-forward button.
In summary, the SL-MP70 is a stylish and very dependable CD/MP3 player. Highly recommended for those who don't need a separate MP3 player like iPod or RCA Lyra.

Enjoy music with the freedom that comes from MP3 CD playback, extended battery life, and high-powered anti-skip technology. Panasonic's exclusive No-Skip technology helps prevent interruptions from jostling during active use. No Skip's unique construction uses rubber brushings to absorb shock, while an anti-skip mechanism and an anti-skip digital servo further prevent read errors. A 48-second memory reserve provides added back up. Now, battery changes will be fewer and farther between thanks to Panasonic's PowerLast high-efficiency power system, which combines an efficient motor with low-load circuitry for playback time of up to 48 hours on two AA batteries (during MP3 playback). CD playback abilities include ID3 tag support (displays artist names and song titles with properly formatted sound files); 24-track random-access programming; repeat and resume (which picks up where the unit left off when last stopped); and skip/search and memory/recall. A hold switch prevents accidental starting, stopping, or track skipping during use or transport. The unit boasts a thin design with operation keys and LCD laid out logically on its top cover.
