GPX C3960 Personal CD/MP3 Player with 120-Second MP3 Anti-Shock Protection Review

GPX C3960 Personal CD/MP3 Player with 120-Second MP3 Anti-Shock Protection

Being a long haul semi driver I've found that MP3's are the solution to my audio needs since swapping a normal CD every 80 minutes while driving is impractical and some would argue downright dangerous. Originally I had an RCA 2410 which was as useless as a milk pail under a bull, and then later an RCA 2450 which was just the same. For a year I used my laptop as my player but after dropping it multiple times it has ceased to function. A colleague of mine purchased the GPX 3960 for his own use which caused me to laugh long and hard. To me GPX has always been one of those joke brands that you would expect to find in an Alco store (those of you in the midwest will understand) sitting on the shelf by the Emersons. But when he reported that his worked great I had to get one for myself and so far I've grown attached to it.
Unlike the 2 RCA's I've had, this one isn't terribly picky about the burn speed you use to create your CDR's or CDR-W's (yes they work too), the RCA 2410 would sometimes work if you burned at 1x, this model plays just fine on CDR's that were burned at 16x, might even work at higher speeds though I haven't tried yet. Also, it doesn't hang on mp3's encoded at 320 kbps or even variable bit rates. It also has both line out and head phone out jacks, a feature I haven't seen on portable CD players in years. There are some negative drawbacks that keep this from receiving 5 stars. First, it does skip from time to time, though I don't believe it's caused from vibrations since it has survived with flying colors the I70 across Missouri torture test. The skipping must be from occasional read errors though it usually recovers and continues where as both RCA models would either hang all day or jump to another region of the disk. Second, the randomize feature doesn't randomize very well, by that I mean no matter what track I put it to act as the seed for it's random generator it always will play the same order. Third, the interface is very clumsy, changing directories requires pressing two buttons in an esoteric manner so I usually just keep hitting advance to get the directory I want. Fourth, and most annoying, is the slow speed of the fast forward feature. At least it actually does go forward, unlike the RCA 2410 which would go 5 seconds forward and 6 seconds back, but the sluggishness makes fast forwarding through an audiobook ripped from tape a nightmare, and you can't advance to the next track and then rewind. Other minor annoyances are the lack of a backlit display, lack of a cigarette lighter adapter (car users may want to consider snagging a cheap inverter since it only comes with an AC adapter),lack of a cassette adapter, and some may find the lack of MP3 management software bothersome. Sound quality? Well, keep in mind I'm running through a cassette deck in a Kenworth T2000's stock stereo system and the only other experience I have with MP3 players are the RCA's and my laptop. The RCA's, especially the RP 2450 had a rather thin sound to it while this model sounds on par with the laptop.
I can't comment on how the more expensive players such as the RioVolt or iRiver will serve your needs, but if you're looking for a low priced player and can live with the aforementioned annoyances then this one is definitely worth a look.

The GPX C3960 personal CD player supports audio CDs, CD-R/RW discs and MP3-formatted discs. The anti-skip system provides forty-five seconds of CD protection and 120 seconds of MP3 protection, making it possible to use the player while running, biking or riding in a car. The two-line LCD screen displays all pertinent information. With the twenty-four track programmable play mode, it becomes easy to individualize a play list for a long walk or a trip downtown on the bus. The package also comes with digital headphones, making the player very versatile. With the bass boost system, sound quality is much-improved, helping to counter the bass-low characteristics of headphones. Other features include: hold, resume, intro scan, repeat and random.

Sony CFD-S05 CD Radio Cassette Recorder (Silver) Review

Sony CFD-S05 CD Radio Cassette Recorder (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Yes, it's a corny title, I know; what's not corny is this sweet little boombox from Sony. It was little difficult to find a unit like this with all of the features I was in the market for, since boomboxes seem to be on the way out -- at least in their old configurations.
Pretty much gone are days of tape, but I guess that there are some folks out there who still like cassettes; these are the people who will be happy with the CFDS05's built-in tape deck - I will probably never use it. The other features, such as digital AM/FM tuner with numerous presets, CD-R/RW capable compact-disc player, and AUX-in jack for portable music players, are just what I was looking for!
+ The sound, while not audiophile quality, is pleasantly full and crisp; the longstanding Sony Mega Bass feature helps the lower end a little, but don't expect miracles. All in all, it's a very nice sound from a not-too-huge footprint.
+ The digital tuner works well, picking up the new somewhat-hard-to-lock-onto local public music radio station with no difficulties at all. The presets take a little practice -- I actually had to break down and look at the instructions.
+ The CD player seems to have no problems reading my CD-R discs (I always play copies, never original discs); my previous RCA stereo clock radio would conk out in the middle of a CD-R playback.
+ The aux-in feature also works very well with my MP3 player, though it's necessary to crank the volume up a bit in relation to the radio or CD player - don't forget to turn it back down before switching sources!
- About the only minus I can come up with, and it's a minor one, is a lack of some "snazzy" features; there's no remote, no "sleep" feature, and the CD doesn't play back mp3 discs. I'm sure Sony could have included some of these features, but likely not at this price point.
The CFDS05's construction is pretty solid, though perhaps not quite as heavy-duty as the three other Sony boomboxes we own (that are all 3-6 years old, and we haven't had a lick of trouble from any of them). I am hopeful this one will be just as reliable as its predecessors.
Overall, I would say that if you're in the market for what I think is becoming a scarce product offering, pick one of these up while you can! I am very pleased that I found yet another quality Sony boombox to meet my listening needs - I've tried many, many others, and I always end up coming back to Sony.

Sony D-CJ500 Portable CD/MP3 Player Review

Sony D-CJ500 Portable CD/MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third CD-MP3 player and my favorite by a long shot. I have also owned a Philips Expanium EXP103 and a Pine D'Music SM200C. This Sony has the fit and finish of the Philips device, but the ID3 tag support of the Pine device.
Pros:
* Battery life. Sony claims 24 hours. I only use it for 4-6 hours at a time and in doing so I've only depleted 25% of the battery so it seems about right.
* FAST startup. It is about 10 seconds from the time you put the CD in to the time it actually starts playing. Usually MP3-CD players with ID3 tag support take much much longer.
* Great ID3 tag support. You can view the title, artist, and album information.
* Folder navigation (and shows the names of the folders as you are navigating)
* Fantastic anti-skip protection. I was unable to get it to skip without doing something that might actually damage the unit. For MP3s it actually reads the current MP3 into memory and stops spinning the CD. For the most part the CD is not spinning when you play MP3s. I assume this is how they get such long battery life.
* Good repeat options for CDs and MP3s (on MP3s you can repeat just the current folder)
* Intuitive controls
* Size: slim and very light
Cons:
* No "line out" jack (not a big deal for me, but it is for some)
* No backlight for display
* Size: while it is slim it is somewhat longer than the smaller Sony CD Walkmans. It is still smaller than the Philips and Pine players I had.
* Sort of cheap looking, especially the bottom of the unit. Since nobody sees the bottom there's no big deal. For me this is a bonus since I spend a lot of time listing in the airport. If it looks cheap nobody will want to steal it. It's not cheaply made, but it doesn't have the "cool" factor that some of the other Sony CD Walkman products have.

I LOVE this GPX BD707B Portable DVD Boom Box! (title on Amazon is incorrect)
It is very well made (not a light cheap boom box) , very fun and easy to use. The bass on this item is AWESOME, the sound quality is surprisingly fantastic for a boom box - the best one I've ever heard with such great sound quality.

The radio tuner is very nice with AM/FM/FM Stereo. The stations come in very well and I haven't had to even use the antenna on it yet.

I have twin boys and they LOVE how they can BOTH sing along with a few Karaoke CD's we have while using the mics (this system has TWO mic jacks and you can also easily adjust the mic level). This works fantastic with the Region 1 and Region 2 DVD's (PAL and NTSC)that we own. To access the settings (brightness, contrast, aspect ratio etc.) you can use the MENU button on the the boombox or with the supplied remote.
Although it does not have an Aux. in jack or an SD card slot, I was able to connect my MP3/MP4 player that has an SD card with MP3's in a folder. I just connected it up with a USB cable to this boombox and it works great! It found the AUDIO folder right off and played the MP3's. This item also works with MP3's on CD's, as well as MP3's on my USB Flash drives. This connects up very nicely with my camcorders and TV too.
This will be fun to have on the patio, at a family BBQ, at picnics, or where ever you'd take a boom box to. AND this one also PLAYS DVD's as well as gives you access to your camcorder to view on the 7 inch screen.
This is the best boom box I've ever had. We love it tremendously!

My parents bought this CD player for my sister over 6 years ago. About 3 years ago, she gave it to me. I used to use it every day until I got my MP3 player. I pulled it out of my closet this morning and it still plays CDs and tapes, and the radio works great even with the antenna broken off. Most of my stuff doesn't last more than a year, and this thing has survived 3 years of my abuse and still works like the day I got it. If you want a durable, fairly cheap CD player boombox, this is your best bet. It outlasted 2 high-end Sony Boomboxes and numerous portable CD players over the years. I highly recommend this boombox not only for durability, but also great sound quality and style.

This is one of the best CD players I've used. I listen to a lot of Books on Tape and this player picks up exactly where you leave off even if you stop it to do something else for awhile. It's fairly good about playing scratched CDs and has not jumped while I have been working out in the yard or walking with it. The ear phones are OK but get bit irritating after wearing them for a time. If you are looking for a good CD portable player without the radio, this is it. It is pretty light on battery use also.

Bought a CD player, of another brand, locally, it didn't work at all right out of the box so returned it. Came to amazon and read the reviews of the CD players they carry and was not really impressed with most of them, this one had the best of reviews so I ordered it and it worked like a charm right out of the box. Unfortunately due to my own clumsy handling of the product I happen to drop it 5 times in a 2 day period, 2 of the drops really hard.
The hinge for the top broke on the second hard fall and I thought that I had seen the end of this great little thing----BUT NO--I pushed the play button and it went right on playing as if nothing had happened. It is still playing a week later flawlessly. I ordered a new one which arrived yesterday but haven't unpacked it yet, I am hoping that it is as good as the poor thing that I tried so hard to kill.
Incredible track record for something so abused, I take much better care of it now..love this little machine.

Sony DE441 Discman Review

Sony DE441 Discman
Average Reviews:

I bought this Discman from Amazon a couple weeks ago as a birthday gift for my mother. I liked the price and it seemed to be of good quality. Once the Discman arrived, I presented it to my mother during a trip to the beach and I ended up listening to it for several hours throughout the trip.
First off, I really liked the headphones. They were very comfortable and gave off good sound. Next, I found that the Discman had many useful features. The ESP was wonderful--it would not skip even when I tried to make it skip. I listened to it for about two hours of driving in a car, with it sitting on the seat, and it did not skip once. I even knocked on the top of it a couple times, gave it a few good jolts, to see if it would skip and it didn't even stutter.
I also really liked the resume feature. If you turn the CD off in the middle of a song and leave that same CD in, then when you turn it back on, it will start up exactly where you left off. Not mindblowing, but nifty and somewhat handy.
All in all, I found the Discman to be a great buy. (And my mom has come to love it as well, as soon as I actually let her use it.) The ESP is top quality, the sound is good, there are plenty of features, the headphones are comfortable, and the price is definitely right. Highly recommended.

Pro:
1. Tiny

3. Cute
4. Decent radio reception even with very short antenna
Con:
1. Puny sound (but it's a tiny, inexpensive stereo...)
2. IT HUMS. In radio or CD mode, there is a moderate/low pitched hummming sound that comes through the music. Even when you're not playing a CD, there's the hum. I thought it was just me, since I'm very sensitive to hums, but my wife (who doesn't care) noticed it, too, without my pointing it out.
I MAY keep this boombox because it's cheap and cute, but the hum really does irritate me.

RCA RP3013 Personal CD Player with FM Radio Review

RCA RP3013 Personal CD Player with FM Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After looking at the star ratings and comments for various CD players online, and finding most nothing to brag about, I wandered down to a local store and bought the RCA model RP3013 because it was good looking, had great controls, was cheap enough, and it was an RCA. I also liked having an FM tuner. It comes with earbuds, but I just plugged in a set of my Sennheisers....I'm a traditionalist.
After using it for a week, I am more than happy with my choice.
First, the LCD is on top and easy to read. The buttons for play/pause, stop/off, eq, program, forward and back are also on top of the unit in the form of individual buttons in a semi-circle, very straightforward. Two AA's inside, under a cover....easy to install, unless you have sausage links for fingers. Sound is fine, but not the same as you'd expect from your iPod. Better than I expected however, and yes, I also own a large capacity iPod. The FM radio brings in my stations quite well, with an ST indicator to hone in on the best frequency.

Only negative, it has a wheel for volume, and another wheel for radio station selection, although the selected station is visible in the LCD window. I would have preferred electronic volume and tuning buttons. Kind of a surprising omission, but I can live with it. Just not crazy about wheels. Kind of 80's technology.
Anyhow, overall, very intuitive controls, good sound, decent battery life, a good purchase.

Panasonic SL-CT800 Ultra Thin Portable CD Player Review

Panasonic SL-CT800 Ultra Thin Portable CD Player
Average Reviews:

The SL-CT800 is an amazing CD player. Not only is it thin and attractive, but it also has an amzong battery life: up to 120 hrs (unheard of typically for MP3 CD Players). It works very well. The only problem I've had with it is that, unlike iRiver's SlimX 400, the LCD doesn't show international characters (i.e., letters from other languages, like the French "é" or the Spanish "ñ", or Russian Cyrillic, etc.). That's not a major problem though, and does not lessen the overall prestige of this amazing device. A definite A+++!

Panasonic's ultra-slim, MP3- and WMA-friendly SL-CT800 CD player offers the convenience of pocket-slim sizing, remote control operation, and a staggering 80 hours of MP3/WMA file playback. The player's No Skip technology combines rubber, shock-absorbing brushings and an anti-skip digital servo with 48-second memory reserve (100 seconds for MP3) for added back up.Panasonic's Power Last system uses a highly efficient motor with low-load circuitry for drastically improved playback time, helping the player derive up to 120 hours of MP3 file playback from two supplied Ni-MH rechargeable batteries in conjunction with two standard AA batteries (not supplied) in the included (and optional, for general operation) external battery case. This unit's AC adapter uses a magnet to make it easier than traditional adapters to connect and disconnect. Once the magnetic connector is inserted into the adapter, connections and disconnects are effortless. (You may also connect in the conventional way without using the magnet adapter.)A hold function activated from the supplied wired remote control prevents unintended interruptions in playback and saves batteries by negating playback when the player is stopped. You can set it to lock the player, the remote control, or both. The SL-CT800's digital-to-analog converter is Panasonic's single-bit MASH (multi-stage noise shaping technology) DAC, designed to virtually eliminate distortion and deliver all the subtleties and nuances that make digital recordings so rich.Playback options include 20-track programming, repeat (track or disc), and random play. With the player's moving-light key illumination, the buttons on the side of the unit change color and light up in different sequences, showing both the mode of operation and the remaining battery life. What's in the Box CD player, stereo earbud headphones, wired remote control, external battery pack with two Ni-MHrechargeable batteries, user's manual, and an AC power adapter with magnetic connector.

This summer, I was telling my eleven-year old niece that it would be nice to have a cd and fm walkman in one. She looked at me like I was so out of it and told me it already existed.
Well, you know Sony would be responsible! I absolutely love my walkman!! I have owned several models over the years and the more Sony builds, the better they become. This model does not skip at all and mine has been through the gym and on hikes! When you get tired of the disc, you just switch over to the tuner. You have the option to program stations (not a new feature of course) and they come in crystal clear. I just love the option, especially when you are planning on extended use.
Very durable as usual and a nice strap to slip over your hand for easy/secure handling.
Sony equates quality!

My experience with this boombox was horrible. I bought it, it worked fine for the first 4 days, then the cd player got messed up. It wouldn't load my cds, instead, the cds would spin out of control in the player. This boombox is not recommended.

Take your favorite tunes on the road or to the park with this portable CD boombox. Sporting a unique, rounded chassis with black highlights that's way more fashionable than standard boxy models, the CX-CD241 is an ideal choice for music fans who want a little extra style with their sounds. Fortunately for listeners, the cool shape doesn't detract from the music, as the CD player still includes all the basics and a few extras. Among the features are standard skip, search, and repeat one and all functions, along with programmable track memory for listeners who want to create a custom soundtrack. When the CDs are played out, listeners can turn to the AM/FM tuner for a less-structured playlist.
The CX-CD241 owes its audio performance to its 1-bit digital-to-analog converter, which ensures a clean CD sound, and its pair of wide-ranging side speakers. Rounding out the feature set is a digital two-digit LED display, a telescoping FM antenna, and a flip-up carrying handle. The unit runs on either AC power or six C-size batteries (not included) and measures a compact 8.25 by 5.5 by 8.5 inches (W x H x D). And as with all Coby audio products, the CX-CD241 is backed by a 90-day warranty.

GPX Portable CD Player with AM/FM Radio, Line in for MP3 Devices and Remote Control (Black) Review

GPX Portable CD Player with AM/FM Radio, Line in for MP3 Devices and Remote Control (Black)
Average Reviews:

I can't believe the negative reviews of this. It is what it is - an inexpensive portable. Sure, if you jack up the sound all the way, it will distort. It doesn't have expensive components that give you additional bass because they are not putting expensive speakers in an item that is supposed to be cheap.
For what it's worth, it's 10 times better quality than GPX was just 10 years ago. It fits the bill perfectly for a portable to drag around the house or set up in the office. The MP3 line-in works great - no annoying hum or static. It picks up stations better than my Sony portable - at least on FM. The digital readout on the analog tuner works great and I am noticing no drift. Just like Kaito, the Chinese produced radios are getting better and better. Mine is replacing an Emerson (who used to have good quality) that has basically fallen apart before my eyes in just two years.
If you want something perfect, pay more money. If you don't get hung up on expecting everything for a low price and you want to save some money and get a decent radio, this is the way to go.
