Coby CA-747 Dual Position CD/MD/MP3 Cassette Adapter Review

Coby CA-747 Dual Position CD/MD/MP3 Cassette Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this product and found like many other people out there that if you have a tape deck with an auto-reverse feature, that you'll have some problems with just about any cassette adapter. After looking online, I found out how to fix most brands, but not this one. So after tooling around for about half an hour, I figured out how to get this cassette adapter to work in an auto-reverse tape deck. If you open the adapter and look inside, you'll see a small gear between one of the center teeth wheels and the little assembly that contains the guide wheel near the edge of the adapter that can only rotate in one direction. Remove this small gear. This will allow the tape to spin freely in either direction. If you look at the guide wheel, you'll notice that it can shift to two positions. One that protrudes closer to the outside of the adapter and one that has it sit more inside the adapter. Tape this piece so that it stays permanently in one of these two positions. That guide wheel moving is how the auto-reverse in your tape deck knows to activate. After I made these changes, I found that the adapter worked in my Ford tape deck flawlessly. No need for an FM transmitter, after all! Hope this helps those of you with the same problem!

The key feature on this cassette adapter is the dual position, fully modular adapter which gives you the option to plug this into both front and side-loading cassette players. If you're trying to connect your CD or mini-disc player into a cassette deck, this component should do the trick.

I bought this item a few months ago whilst looking for something to use on long airplane flights. I loved it--the battery life is fairly good for a portable DVD player (I usually get 4-6 hours from it). It is easy to use and it carries well. I have it strapped into the back of my car for when I carry my nieces and nephew around and it works great! The disc rarely (if ever!) skips and the quality of picture is good. It easily hooks to larger screens so that you can use it as your primary DVD player. I love it!

Coby CS-MP77 75-Watt High Performance MP3 Speaker System Review

Coby CS-MP77 75-Watt High Performance MP3 Speaker System
Average Reviews:

For the money, this is pretty darn good.
I'm happy with what I paid and as an audio engineer, that's not something easily accomplished. I'm fairly picky with the equipment I buy, but I needed a somewhat portable set of speakers for my iPod and Macbook, something under $30, that can fill a 10'x10' room. This system fits the bill.
This is *NOT* a stereo or bookshelf system, it's just a set of speakers! Keep that in mind when you go to buy it.
Plug and play, but be sure to fiddle around with the volume and bass knobs on the back of the woofer (go with mid level setting first), then go to your EQ settings on your iPod, laptop, etc. Taking advantage of EQ presets or your own presets will give you the best from this little gem.
I really do suggest making a few customized EQ settings in iTunes (or whichever program you use) for this speaker set. You will get more out of it that way.
This is not a heavy, bass boost, butt kicking system... if you want that, shell out the $200+ for a bookshelf system with a huge subwoofer, because it's not going to come from this speaker set. This set is good for filling small rooms and possibly a bit more. It has a nice sound and does resonate the bass and low end rather well when the right EQ is used.
It looks good to boot.
Very nice little speaker set.

I had been looking for a portable DVD player but simply did not want one bad enough to spend the $100 - $200 for a decent one. I found the coby 7006 model for only $19.00. I was skepitical due to the price but figured I had 30 days to return it if it turned out to be a dud. Turns out it was anything but a dud. It plays many, many types of media that more expensive models do not play. It has a slew of bells and whistles. In fact, more bells and whistles then my regular high dollar DVD player/recorder. The picture is excellent. All the bells and whistles are very easy to use. No reason to even read the manual it is so simple to figure out. A great full featured remote control does about everything you can imagine, very easily. My only gripe, which is a gripe with many portable DVD players is it does have a rechargeable battery (lasted 3 hours and 20 minutes before needing to be recharged) and it does come with an ac jack for in home use and a DC cord for use with your cars cigarrete lighter. However, you must remove the battery, which requires unscrewing the back panel, if you are going to watch a movie using the ac or dc connections, as if the battery is left in, it will work on the battery as well as charge at the same time, ruining the battery, which is $40 to replace. However, all in all, this is a great portable DVD player. I like it as much or better then some of the $200 models I have looked at and am quite pleased I found it for only $19, although I would pay regular retail if wanted one ASAP and didnt want to wait to find one at a great price.

For its price, I'd give it three stars. With price out of my mind, I'd give it maybe a 1.5 just because you can at least hear your music.
The pads are ok. The started ripping after a few months, but that's normal from wear and tear. The frame holds itself fine--no cracks or bends--but then again, I've only been using these headphones at the computer.
They're not the most comfortable headphones in the world, but they're pretty nice and light. It's also adjustable, so you can get a nice fit. I can't complain here.
The sound quality is ok for people who don't really care about it. Personally, I found it to be a bit flat. It's better than nothing though.
If you're looking for something cheap, then go ahead and get this. Just don't expect anything extraordinary. If you want something with better sound, then skip this one.

Coby TFDVD7009 7-Inch Portable DVD/CD/MP3 Player (Black)

This is a great compact and light dvd player for the price. I was in the market for an inexpensive portable dvd player for my 2-year-old son. I also have the TFDVD7008, but my son kept touching the inside of the player that dvds don't play properly anymore. However, because I liked it so much, I decided to buy another one. I can't comment on all the technical features because I basically use it to play my son's favorite dvds, but I like that it's small, compact, and light. I can fit it in my bag and take it with me wherever I go. The battery life is about 4 hours, which is plenty! I like that it has a rubber grip on the bottom, so the player doesn't slide around on a table (the 7008 didn't have that). I only wish there was a menu button on the player itself and not just on the remote because I don't really use the remote. I also wish there was a way to store the remote in the player itself. That would be nice. Other than that, I really like this dvd player.

Coby DVD-209 Ultra Compact DVD Player Review

Coby DVD-209 Ultra Compact DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This pint-sized portable DVD player from Coby belies its compact form with a sleek, attractive design, a sharp, crisp image accessible through composite outputs, a full-functioned miniature remote and the ability to read and smoothly play virtually any disc format, including + and - RW DVDs,
So why, you may well wonder, have I given this ostensibly marvelous little device a rating of only one star? The answer is that sadly, it suffers from what is, for anyone with normal hearing, a fatal flaw: It is loud. I mean truly unbearably, irredeemably LOUD.
On playback, the motor revs up to whir at such blaring decibels that it actually drowns out any quiet scenes that you may be watching, and yields an interminable din that competes even with normal levels of volume. In other words, its sound is omnipresent and endlessly, hopelessly distracting, rendering the machine, for this user at least, completely useless.
If larger DVD players, as well as compact CD players of the same size, don't generate this kind of noise, then there's really no excuse for the DVD-209 to be doing it, other than just plain poor engineering design.
What a waste -- of both a good idea for a compact DVD player -- and my money.

Coby TFDVD7008 7-Inch Portable DVD/CD/MP3 Player (Black) Review

Coby TFDVD7008 7-Inch Portable DVD/CD/MP3 Player (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The price is right on this little unit. The picture is a little better than my previous two portable units. The sound is a little worse (if I could increase the volume just a little bit more it would be perfect). It's very lightweight. Like most cheap units, I expect to get 1-2 years of play out of this unit before I'll need to look for another.
Unusually, this unit comes with a little remote control. This remote gives you a lot more control over functions than most portable DVD players; you can for example skip directly to a specified point on the disk. And you can do things like set a chapter to endlessly looped play, or pick two points on the disk and have it endlessly loop between those two points. The "zoom" feature the remote gives you is great and is the reason why I gave this unit a fourth star rather than the three stars a cheap unit normally deserves.
Now the bad thing about that remote is that (1) it's small, and (2) there is no way of attaching the remote to or within the player so that I can already see that it is easy to misplace the remote. (I'm already considering using velcro to solve this problem).
The manual is not so great. It gets points for actually using the English language well, but loses lots of points on what it doesn't bother to tell you. You have to experiment a bit to discover undocumented features and functions. For example, the forward and reverse buttons work differently when you are currently zoomed in; they become instead pan right and pan left buttons.
And the manual won't tell you what you have to do to shut the unit down so that so that it restarts at the point on the disk where you left off. (If you just try stopping or pausing it reloads the disk and starts from the beginning). I've had success two ways: (1) pausing the picture and letting the unit go into (the undocumented) power saver mode. If you then turned the unit off and immediately back on, it seemed to remember where it left off. An even easier way: (2) use the remote to turn the unit off. If you then use the remote to turn it back on, it picks back up where it left off.
Here's another little undocumented feature. Like most units manufactured for multiple markets, there is a programming sequence you can use to change what region this player can play. Here's how to set up this player to play other region-codes using the remote:
1. Open DVD tray
2. Press the "Menu" button (ignore message "Not allowed at this moment")
3. Press 8888
4. Press the "Display" button
5. Region Code Number shows up. Use the numeric keypad to select your
region code number (0 - 6).
6. Press the Enter button.
I've verified my unit plays both region 1 and region 2 disks.

Before even starting reading this commentary go back and look at the features of this DVD player... Ok did you find it? Yes, it plays DVD+R/RW. If you have ever recorded a DVD only to find your portable would not play it, yup, instant buyer's remorse. This is a HUGE benefit for a DVD player under $100
Beyond recorded +R/RW DVDs, the most important aspects of this basic DVD player are that #1 It has a clear screen, #2 the speakers are good and clear for private play (if you need them louder you are probably disturbing the people around you), #3 it has very good battery life, #4 the controls are easy to use, and #5 it comes with all the accessories you need: DC car adaptor, headphones, and a remote.
If you just want a good, solid DVD player for airplane travel, car trips, or to keep your son or daughter busy in times of need, this is it! If you intend to view movies with someone else, you may want to go with a 10" screen and dual headphones.
I paid around $80 including tax and the CA (ultra liberal state mandated) battery recycling charge for the Coby, and the quality, reliability, and durability have far surpassed the cost! I've experienced the frozen screen syndrome now and then with recorded DVDs, it has skipped once or twice, but I do not know of a portable DVD player that has NEVER done that on occasion, especially with recorded DVD capabilites.
My final word on the Coby, pay the under $100 price and buy a 1 or 2 year replacement plan for $10 for peace of mind. If you are real picky about sound, want the screen to rotate, and care about all the other details... go ahead and spend $200. As for me, it is hard to pay attention to those minor details while sitting in a noisy airport. Spend the $80-$90, save the rest to improve your home system (or get a game system) and buy this one for travel and other away from home use.

Coby Electronics TF-DVD1021 10-Inch Slim Portable DVD Player with Swivel Screen Review

Coby Electronics TF-DVD1021 10-Inch Slim Portable DVD Player with Swivel Screen
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I must admit I have never been a big fan of Coby and other off/budget brand gear. I tend to buy only Panasonic, Sony and other name brand video gear. I bought this for a road trip for my 5 year old, to try to make my hours of driving on vacation more bearable for him.
I selected it after comparing it with about 6 or 7 other players. Very quickly, I came to the conclusion that any player with a smaller than 8" screen would not be worth considering. I also found that there are not many name brand players available to choose from. It is best to bring a high quality DVD with you to compare the players one by one. Cars, Happy Feet, Toy Story or other recent animation gives you a pretty good idea how good the picture quality is on each player. Some of the players in the store, when I got there, were playing old Hello Kitty stuff that made all the players look fuzzy and terrible.
After spending about 8 hours with this player this weekend, here are my perceptions.
The good:
The 10" screen, besides being a very nice size, has an excellent picture quality with its 480 x 800 resolution, vs WQVGA 480 x 234 on many models.
The player came with no dead pixels on the screen, which is always nice. The screen is also matte (anti-reflective), meaning no glare in the car.
It comes with a nice remote that controls all the functions except the volume control, (it is also the only way to control the player when you use the headrest mount).
It includes a complete set of accessories (see list below).
The screen swivels and can be laid flat like a tablet, rare in a budget player.
The speakers are more than acceptable for car use, even with some road noise.
The anti-skip feature works very well, no skipping observed while driving on some rough roads and various on- and off-ramps.
The unit has a video-in port to connect cameras, video games etc.
Two headset ports (both controlled with one volume control).
The battery is built in, making the player thin (1") and light and is replaceable via a battery door on the bottom of the unit.
The bad:
The two headphones are mostly for kids, since they are rather small.
The battery life is on the short side, rated at around 2 hours (not tested), probably due to the built in design.
If you use the headrest mount, changing DVD's is a bit of a chore.
The typical warranty on this player and most portable DVD players is 1 year parts, but only 90 days labor. If they break after 90 days, repairing them in most cases will probably not be worth it. The batteries are also in many cases not replaceable, although this player has a battery port access door.
Problems noted:
This player (for unknown reasons) does not care for my Pixar Cars DVD. The audio will skip continuously the first time you start the movie. If you go to the MENU and then return to the movie, everything is fine. Did not see any problems on the 4 or 5 other DVD's I tried. This DVD is new and scratch free, and has no problems on any of my other DVD players.
The details:
The player has a 10" screen with 800 x 480 resolution, far higher than most other players that have smaller screens and WQVGA 480 x 234 resolution. The screen brightness and contrast are excellent, and are adjustable from the remote. The WQVGA screens I saw on other players looked pretty bad, even a few feet away. Even with the smaller screens, they were just barely, or not acceptable in my opinion. The credits at the end of movies look especially chopped up, almost unreadable. The viewing angle on this player, and most other typical portable DVD players, is rather narrow, maybe 30-40 degrees. This will make it a bit tricky for other passengers to see the movie using the headrest mount. This appears to be a common limitation on many LCD screens I have encountered on various devices.
The accessory list included is pretty complete: two headsets, car charger, wall charger, video out cable (for playing on an external screen, the Hotel TV for example), cassette adapter to play the movie through the car stereo (assuming you have the rapidly disappearing cassette player), and a headrest adapter. The car charger can be used to power the player continuously in certain airplanes (American Airlines planes for example), and in your car. I mostly intend on using this as a car player (and mostly fly AA), making the battery life for me mostly a moot point.
The headrest mount works well and holds the player securely. It is much more comfortable for your kids than holding the player in their lap, and prevents it from being dropped on the floor in case of tired fingers, car braking, dozing off etc. It can be mounted on headrests and airplane seat tray tables rather easily by adjusting two clip-together straps. This player and most portable DVD players are rather delicate equipment, and probably won't survive being dropped more than once or twice, making the mount pretty useful.
Changing DVD's while using the headrest mount is a bit tricky. The mount is a bag type mount the player slides into on one side, closed by a velcro strap. While inside, the DVD is between the screen and the player, which means not accessible. To change the DVD, you have to take the player off the headrest, remove it out of the mount, unlatch the screen to get to the DVD compartment, swap out the DVD, re-insert player into the mount, re-mount the player on the headrest. Mine was mounted on the passenger side headrest, so leaving the mount on the headrest was not possible. It might be possible to slide it out of the headrest if mounted on the drivers side (not attempted by myself).
Here are some of the players I compared before buying this one:
Sony DVPFX810 - a contender but with a smaller 8" screen, low resolution and a great potential for glare with its shiny plastic window.
Audiovox D1917 - With a 9" screen, probably an ok kids player due to it being rather inexpensive with a relatively large screen for the price. Picture quality appeared to be ok, but the QWVGA resolution is again barely acceptable.
Memorex? MVDP1102 - With a 10.2" screen, could have been a contender but the screen was very dark on the player I looked at. I could not find a brightness adjustment anywhere to see if it could be corrected. Could have been just this player, but it was ruled out because the screen was too dark (an obvious factor for daytime use in a car).
Maxx Digital PDV8500 - With a 8.5" screen, the picture on this player was excellent, the sound was good, appeared to have the best picture of players with 8" - 9" screens. It is also a flat player (not clamshell type), so it probably can be mounted easily on a seat or headrest. The plastic construction appeared somewhat fragile however.
Wanted but not found:
Panasonic DVD-LS850 or LS-82. Probably my first choice sight unseen if I would have found one, and if I was choosing this for myself. Excellent battery life of up to 10 hours (LS-82). I have always been a fan of Panasonic video gear and would probably have chosen this player as my #1 choice. If the Coby ever croaks, this will probably be its replacement. I did not see this player in any of the stores I checked. Has gotten very good reviews everywhere I checked.
Not considered:
Accurian(tm) 10" LMD-5108A - The Accurian players appear to have a bad reputation and appear to die prematurely according to the users posting on the Radioshack website. I therefore did not consider them a viable choice in my search.
Conclusion:
My conclusion here is that in the budget brand portable DVD arena, the Coby might be getting a bad rap, and is by far the best budget 10" player I have found. I was not expecting much, but was actually very pleasantly surprised that the picture quality of this player was as good as it is. It will be an obvious choice compared next to most lower resolution/smaller screen players. That it can be headrest mounted (although the DVD swapping is a hassle) makes this a good kids DVD player for car travel. Considering that most younger kids prefer watching the same movie over and over, it appears to be a pretty good choice. To overcome the DVD changing issue, I'll probably use my DVD recorder to make a 6.5 hour cartoon/kids show collection DVD. That should easily cover a day's worth of vacation driving. My son likes it and can operate the remote on his own, so I have no complaints so far. If picture quality and screen size are important to you, and you are shopping for a budget brand player, I would definitely put this player on my list.

Coby CX-CD377 Micro CD Stereo System with AM/FM Tuner with Digital Display and Line-in Input (Black) Review

Sorry, but this is not a good investment. Even at 40 bucks. Poorly designed and speakers are junk. Offer better speakers and adjust price downward, because fidelity is not good. Unit is just too big for what is does. In my view it has questionable electronics. Has a hum when nothing is coming out of it. May be a suspect power transformer...who knows?. It has an input for MP3, but no line out for perhaps better speakers. No headphone jack. Not very versatile. As far as I'm concerned, this is not a true microsystem. Has Limited capability. Pay the extra and get a SONY.

One of the wires on our original adapter was chomped on by a kitten (fortunately the low-voltage side), but this replacement seems to function exactly as did the original. Doesn't get too warm; charges at the same rate.

Toshiba SD1700 DVD Player Review

Toshiba SD1700 DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I didn't want a DVD player to double as a CD player, or to hold up to 5 DVD's... the single tray here is fine, after all, I watch one movie at a time. I just wanted your basic DVD player with the standard features. This SD1700 by Toshiba delivers excellent picture quality (500 lines of resolution). Standard features like the necessary S-Video output, Dolby Digital and DTS output and various special effects... Zoom (up to 4x), slow motion, multi-language capability (if available on the DVD), and 3 speeds of fast forward & reverse (2x, 8x, 30x). The only special effect I personally haven't been able to use is the "multi camera angle"... I have about 50 DVD's and none of them offer this multi angle. The Toshiba is a sleek black box and the remote is easy to use with the push buttons well positioned. If you're looking for a basic unit to play your DVD's on - this is the one. Great player for the price.

With the Toshiba SD1700 DVD-Video player, you'll get Toshiba quality and all the features common to Toshiba DVD players--for a bargain price. The SD1700's feature set includes parallel video output (great for multi-room viewing), Dolby Digital and DTS digital-audio output (for use with a surround-decoding AV receiver), Spatializer N-2-2 virtual surround sound (for making your two speakers sound like four), three slow-motion speeds, and an icon-based onscreen display for simple setup and adjustments.
Another key feature is the player's ColorStream component-video outputs. A component-video connection is the ideal way to connect a digital video source like DVD to a TV display (requires compatible inputs), resulting in increased image purity, and incredibly lifelike and very crisp color resolutions. The 10-bit D/A converter with high-resolution filter ensures excellent picture quality, while the 24-bit/192 kHz audio converter with dialogue enhancement renders clear and dynamic sound reproduction.
Some of the more convenient features are audio CD and DVD-R compatible playback, four forward and reverse scan speeds, and a unique first setup menu that assists viewers in accurately setting up their player to suit their system's capabilities. Parental lock, time search, camera angle select, and 4-power picture zoom are all included on this model, as are S-video, composite video, and coaxial digital outputs, giving you a wide range of connection options.
The SD1700 comes with a remote control and a one-year warranty on parts and a 90-day warranty on labor from Toshiba.

Coby TF-DVD5000 Portable DVD Player with 5-Inch LCD Review

Coby TF-DVD5000 Portable DVD Player with 5-Inch LCD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently bought the Coby 5" LCD portable DVD player and must say that for the cost it is a solid value. After considerable research and reading of various customer reviews this is the one I went with. For me it's been a purchase that was well worth it.
Pros: picture quality, even on a 5" screen, is quite good. images are crisp and clear, but bright colors tend to glow a bit.Unit is incredibly easy to use. Buttons on the unit perform the same features as the remote. Comes with headphones, car charger, and AC adapter, which some players dont. Plays CD, DVD, MP3 Data Discs, and Photo Discs. Cost only $120. Parental control function on the set up menu can restrict playback based on DVD ratings which is good for the parents.
Cons: Bulky with the added rechargeable battery pack. About 3.5 inches thick with the battery pack. Charge lasts about 3 hours, which is enough for a plane ride. Sound, though good due to stereo speakers, is not high enough to sit back and really enjoy, so headphones are a must. Control buttons don't respond fast, so moving through menus can be plodding. Buttons feel kind of cheap.
All in all a good value for the cost. For those who want a bigger screen the 7" Coby is also a good value. Those that are expecting a Toshiba HDTV quality image or sound will not be happy. These mini's are not designed for that. But for what they are designed for, they do the job extremely well.
