Sennheiser CX 500-B In-Ear Stereo Headphone Review

These headphones are superb; however, BEWARE of all the fakes out there! There are tons and it is very difficult to tell the difference when looking at the physical package. I saw a couple of posts on here that complain about the loud thump when you hit the cord...if this happens, you have fakes. I bought a pair off of eBay (do not buy these off eBay, most if not all are fake) and had some other people that bought from the same seller contact me and inform me that they were fakes. Even worse, when confronted, the seller admitted they were counterfeit and was eventually caught and banned from eBay. With the fakes, every time I exercised and the cord would bump me it was extremely loud and after this happened a couple of times during my first use, I stopped using them while working out (still not knowing they were fakes at this point). When I discovered they were counterfeit, I contacted Sennheiser to find out if Amazon.com was an authorized seller (I was sure Amazon would only deal with legitimate products, but after getting burned on eBay I wanted to make sure I was getting was I was paying for). Here is the response I got from Sennheiser:
"Amazon.com is indeed a dealer...but do not purchase Sennheiser from their 3rd party marketplace unless from J&R or Tiger Direct as they are also authorized dealers."
I see Crutchfield will be selling 3rd party on Amazon and I also found them on the Sennheiser "locate a dealer" site. Tweeter is also a dealer.
Once I received the legitimate Sennheiser headphones from Amazon and I compared them to the fake copies I got off eBay, the differences were pretty evident. The carry pouch on the fakes is all the same color, but the S design has the same shape as that of the real pair's pouch. The carry pouch with the legitimate pair has a shiny and darker black "S" design than the rest of the pouch (the feel of the pouch is also softer). The length in total for both pairs is the same, but on the fakes, the volume control is slightly higher up on the cord as is the CX500 cord separator. One of the most notable differences is when you thump the cord with the phones in your ear...the fakes will produce a very loud thump (and any swift cord movement can be heard and will be very distracting with lots of movement like cardio exercising). On the real pair of headphones, I can hear the thump in total silence, but while listening to music and working out, it is barely audible if at all. Also, on the fakes, the volume control completely mutes the sound when turned down to minimum. On the real pair, when you slide the volume control to the minimum volume, the sound is still faintly audible. Finally, there is the sound quality. I never would have known had I not had a real pair to compare to, but the sound of the fakes does not even come close to the real pair. The sound on the fakes almost sounds muffled after listening to the real pair. The fakes also have a lot more bass to them. The sound of the real pair is clear, clean, crisp and beautiful. I can hear sounds in the music that I never realized were there before. The real pair tends to draw out so much of the music that it is amazing. I never would have known or realized the difference in the sound had I not gotten fed up knowing I had purchased counterfeit headphones and went out and bought a real pair (I got a majority of my money back on the counterfeit pair).
The best advice I can give is if the deal is too good to be true, it likely is. Check out the Sennheiser website and find a legitimate dealer to buy these headphones from if you truly want a good pair of quality headphones. They are worth every penny!

JBuds J2 Premium Hi-FI Noise Isolating Earbuds (Orange Citrus) Review

JBuds J2 Premium Hi-FI Noise Isolating Earbuds (Orange Citrus)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These were my fourth pair of earbuds and the most impressive I've owned. The wiring and connections are solid and reinforced. I've replaced earbuds when the wiring breaks or the sound volume becomes unequal.
I'm hard on earbuds. My workday starts late in the morning and lasts until late in the evening. I need to still be asleep when the gardeners come with their leaf blowers and weed whackers. Earbuds serve a dual purpose: they keep sound out and give me pleasant sounds to sleep by. Being a bit of an insomniac, my MP3 player helps me to fall asleep each night as well. This is tough on earphones.
I'm impressed with the construction of these buds. Stress points are well reinforced and unlikely to fail. But ruggedness isn't the primary reason for buying phones ... sound quality is.
These are second to none when it comes to sound quality. Bass is solid with no distortion. The midrange and highs are crisp and clear. I've listened to everything from hip-hop to classical and they have provided a superior listening experience.
The worst feature of these phones is that they have a straight plug into the media player instead of an angled plug. This makes it easier to accidently unplug the phones. At worst, a minor drawback. Also, the barrel of the buds is a bid longer than others. At first I thought this would be a problem with lying on a pillow, but it hasn't disturbed me at all.
These utterly dominate all the other earbuds I've owned, both in terms of construction quality and in terms of sound. Buy a pair with confidence - you can't go wrong.

Sennheiser CX 400-B Lightweight In-Ear Stereo Headphone Review

Sennheiser CX 400-B Lightweight In-Ear Stereo Headphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great set of earbuds. They sound terrific and have plenty of bass. I also ordered the V-Moda Bass Freqs because I like to "feel" the music in my head, but after listening to the CX400, I'm not sure how much more bass I really want. They really do have great bass. Keep in mind that you must use the silicon tip (3 sizes included) that makes a tight seal and is comfortable for you. For me, it was the medium ones.
The thing with this style of earbud is that unless you fit them securely into your ear canal, you wont hear ANY bass. But once you situate them correctly, the sound is very high quality. You can hear that really low tight bass that most earphones can't reproduce. The mids and high (voice and treble freq) are nice and clear and totally distortion free. Of course, for audiophiles the sound is less than accurate (thats why only 4.5 stars), but for most listeners the sound from these little $35 buds is superb!
Another thing to consider with this type of earbud is that you will hear pretty much all vibration against the cord. That's just an inherent feature of this type of plug. Rubbing of the cord against anything will cause a wind-like noise in your ear, however, I found that if you clip the wire to your shirt with a little slack it's minimal, and while your music is actually playing the sound is easily ignored in the background.
The only other thing I didnt care too much for was the cord length(s). Without the included extension the cord is about 1.5ft, which is only good for an armband or your shirt pocket. The extension adds 3ft, so the result is 4.5ft of cable dangling if you wear your player in your pocket. I had to coil up some of the wire into a small loop and placed a twisty-tie on it to keep in control. I can live with it since the quality makes up for it. The cord and connectors are as high quality as I've seen, although there doesn't seem to be much protection from yanking the cord from the connector that goes in the player.
The silicon tips are comfortable, although I don't wear them for prolonged periods. They seem like they will not come off the bud easily so you're less likely to lose them. They do a fairly good job of isolating, but they don't isolate completely unless your playing music at a reasonable level. I don't like being totally out of it in la-la-land so this was just right for me.
I know you can get the CX300 for about $5 cheaper, but the CX400 comes with a wind up gizmo (doesn't work well when extension cord is used) and a nice black leather pouch. While I cant confirm, I would bet the 400 is also slight superior to the 300 in sound quality. All in all, these are the best $35 you could likely spend on earbuds. Even at $50, these would be a good value, but the value would start to diminish if priced any higher. At this price point ($35), there's really no reason NOT to have a pair of these. For those looking for the cheapest option ($20 or so), spring a little more and get these or at least the CX300. Distortion free, well-balanced earbuds for this price is a rare find - THANK YOU AMAZON!
Just make sure you can live with the in-ear canal earphones, they're not for everyone.
UPDATE: I got my V-Moda Bass Freqs and have been using both for a few days now. Here is what I noticed. The V-Moda buds have more bass, a fairly distinguishable amount more bass. Quite impressive actually. I like the cord much better (no extension, just one length). The cord wrap gizmo is much better, but no pouch is included. That's about it. In terms of sound quality, the V-Moda buds just aren't as good. With my iPhone equalizer off, the V-Moda buds sound muffled - significantly lacking mids and highs. It's mostly just bass. The only equalizer setting that made them sound good was the Acoustic setting. The Senheisers are just so much more balanced. Sure, the bass sounds weaker when you compare them to the V-Moda buds, but thats because the V-Moda have so much. I like a lot of bass, but not ALL bass. The sound has to be well balanced to sound good. Stick with the Senheisers. much better sound and enough bass to keep you happy. I'm tempted to try the higher end V-Moda buds. They may have the balanced sound along with all that bass. For now, I still say these CX-400s are a steal at this price.

Maxell HP-200F Lightweight Stereo Headphones, Silver Review

Maxell HP-200F Lightweight Stereo Headphones, Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Lightweight Stereo Headphones (HP-200F) September 18, 2006 as a replacement for the default Apple earbuds that came with my Ipod. During my first night of using the HP-200F, they worked fine. I was actually impressed by their sound quality, particularly given their extremely reasonable price. However, the very next day, the audio in the left headphone began to cut in and out. I could only fix it by moving the cord around and holding it in an awkward position. I must reiterate that at this point I had had the headphones for less than a full day, I did not drop them or damage them in any way. While this was barely tolerable, I continued to use them because as I said, the sound quality was good, the price was right, and I had no other headphones. On the evening of the 20th, two days after my inital purchase, I attempted to listen to my Ipod using these headphones, only to discover that not only was the left earpiece cutting out, but now the right one was as well. Even after continued manipulation of the cord position, I could only recover slight audio in the right earpiece. These headphones suffered complete failure TWO DAYS after I purchased them. No matter how cheap the price, this is unacceptable. I've purchased a variety of Maxell products in the past, and I've always been reasonably satisfied with them. However, this experience has turned me off the brand for good.

When I buy earbuds, the most important thing for me is the sound quality, followed by how comfortable they are in my ears. The J4 delivered on both of these. I was really impressed by the clarity of the sound and the attention to details in the design. I have had to toss other earbuds because of a flimsy jack or cheap connectors. With the J4s, it is pretty clear that they put some thought into trying to build a product that could take a beating. I have owned other JLab products and have always been impressed with their products and customer service. I highly recommend these to anyone looking for an affordable high quality set of earbuds.

Califone Kids Stereo and PC Headphone (2810-PA) Review

Califone Kids Stereo and PC Headphone (2810-PA)

I bought these headphones before my 2 year old daughter and I were flying cross-country. I tried to get her used to them before the plane ride. I probably should have used them longer before getting on the plane. On the plane she did fine on the way out and even fell asleep with them on. On the way home, she would only wear them for about 20 minutes. I think it was the novelty she did not like, but overall I was happy with the purchase and would recommend these headphones. Just use them a bit before you actually need them to get your child used to them.
By the way since there is no picture, these are kid size headphones. Each earpiece looks like a panda.

Sony MDR-DS3000 Wireless Digital Surround Headphones Review

Sony MDR-DS3000 Wireless Digital Surround Headphones
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had these headphones for about 3 months and I love them.
I listen to music pretty much constantly while I'm working, and though I have some good speakers in my office, I find I focus better with headphones on. I had gotten tired of wired headphones, as the wire always gets fouled up in the chair.
First, the sound quality is excellent. It's not as good as high end speakers, but these headphones are a lot cheaper than high end speakers. I own about 10 pairs of headphones (don't ask) and these are definitely the best.
In the office with these wireless headphones, I can get up from my chair and wander out of the room without taking off the headphones. My office is about 14x14 ft, and the IR signal covers the entire room. I have never had any drop-outs or other interference while in the office. When I walk out of range, the headphones go silent with a slight hiss.
As other reviews have noted, there is a small quiet hiss when nothing is playing. However, the solution to reduce the hiss is not to crank the volume on the headphones, and instead turn up the amplifier. This works exceptionally well. I have these plugged into the headphone jack of a basic $200 receiver.
The other wonderful thing about these headphones is that there is no on/off switch to manage. Instead, the headphones turn off when the inner band of the headphones has no tension on it--in other words, they turn off when they are not sitting on your head. The band is part of the "self-adjusting" feature, and it really works. You just put the headphones over your head, pull the speakers to your ears, and the headphone band adjusts and the headphones power on. This definitely helps with battery life. I haven't really measured the life of the batteries other than to know I only have to charge every now and then.
Although the headphones contain electronics, batteries, and are somewhat large physically, my head does not get tired of them. The earcups are fabric with some padding rather than leather, so my ears don't sweat nearly as much as they do with other leather earcups. Very nice!
The set comes with an optical cable. The back of the base has an optical input and two RCA plugs. I use a 1/4"-to-two-RCA cable from Radio Shack to connect these to my receiver. The base also has a magnet to assist when placing the headphones on the base for charging--the magnet pulls the earcup with the charge connection to exactly the right spot.
Overall, this product is awesome due to its exceptional engineering. The headphones are expensive--no question--but they are worth the money.P.S. Another reviewer noted that this product doesn't work with Plasma TVs. I don't know anything about that, but that review made me worried if it would work in a room filled with LCDs--my office has many LCD monitors. The good news is--they work fine. Also, I can sit either facing the base station or facing directly opposite the base station and the signal continues to come in fine.
UPDATE July 2008: I've had these over two years now and have been using them perhaps 12-20 hours a week, depending on the week. I'm still on the original batteries; they still hold several days of charge for me. I recently moved into a larger office (13 x 25 with vaulted ceiling) and the stand sits in a corner and covers all the line-of-sight visible areas of the room. Still very happy with these.
UPDATE Nov 2010: I've had these headphones almost 5 years. They are still my favorite and I am still on the first set of batteries--and I use these a lot!

I am very happy with my purchase! The microphone doesn't distort my voice at all, and the earphones make my music sound really good. The microphone component also functions as a remote when you are playing music. You can start music, pause, skip to next track, and go back, (plus voice control on 3rd gen iPod or newer), all without being in the iPod app! So for $10, they do exactly what I want. The only fault I find in them are the design of the ear pieces. They hurt a little in my ear, like I want to pop my ear but I can't. They are much different from normal earbuds, because really go in the ear instead of on it. But they come with three different size caps, so you can pick the size that feels most comfortable in your ear. I think this design is meant to help sound isolation - and it does! I also wish the ones with microphone would come in other colors other than the black. But as long as you won't be bothered by the earbud in your ear, these are a great buy!

This package is a great deal for some great headphones. I got mine for 24.99, but even for more than that (34.99 at the moment) this product is a great deal. Meelectronics' M6's are $20 each, and you can see how these are a better value.
Even though these are M6's, they are a little bit differently packaged than the M6-BK or M6-CL versions. This package doesn't come with as many extras (no airplane adapter, small cloth case, cord winder), and the large case it does come with is a cloth case rather than a hard case. The tips included are still exactly the same, and the headphones are the exactly same as M6-BKs.Overall, this is a great value for some great headphones.

Logitech H165 Notebook Headset Review

Logitech H165 Notebook Headset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the first headset I've used with earbuds and an inline mic. I usually wear earbud headphones while working at my desk, and I thought these would make sense for regularly listening to music plus occasionally making Skype calls. In a pinch, they will certainly do that, but the design is flawed enough that I wouldn't really recommend them to others.
The in-ear canal-design is weird and not my first choice. I switched to the smallest sized ear plug included in the box, so I'm glad Logitech gave me a choice. But I feel like my ear canals must be slightly different sizes as one fits well and the other falls out often. But I knew that was the design ahead of time, so I can't fault Logitech for my choosing them.
It's the inline mic that works poorly. The microphone hole is on one side of the inline housing, and the cord seems to always want to rotate the mic side away from my face, making the volume of my voice quite low when compared to some other headsets with regular boom mics. Logitech should have put the mic on the top, so it would always point toward the person's face no matter which direction the cord rotated.
The other annoying part is that the mute switch is in the same housing right next to the microphone, and it makes a loud click when used, so it's very obvious to the people on the call that the mute switch is being flipped. This also puts the mute switch right at mouth level where the mic is fixed, about 3 inches down the cord below the right earbud, which is impossible to see without squashing your chin down into your chest and/or pulling the cord out in front of your face. This means you can't easily check whether it's muted, and if you want to mute without looking away you end up fumbling your fingers around on the microphone, which produces annoying sounds on the call. Logitech should separate the mic from the mute switch so both can be placed at their own optimal positions, and the mic can be muted without an audible click on the audio.
There is a lapel clip included which may have been intended to help mitigate the mic rotation problem, but the clip itself is weird because it doesn't hold the cord securely and so it all just slides around. The clip does marginally help stop the earbud from being pulled out of your ear if the cable is tugged. There is also a barrel shaped bit of plastic fixed on the cord near the jacks, which the manual states is a place to stick the plug when not in use. But it only has room for one plug, not both, which leaves the other jack hanging and thus seems to kind of defeat the purpose. Maybe I'm missing the point?
In conclusion, if you actually want a headset to actually use with Skype, I think you just have to bite the bullet and use a headset with a regular boom mic, even though it might be dorky looking.
Last note: this headset is not compatible with Mac hardware, and neither are any others that use stereo jacks. Macs don't have microphone jacks as many other PCs do, they only have line-in jacks which don't supply the right amount of power. I found out the hard way and had to order a USB adapter to make it work on my 2009 iMac. Believe me Mac users, don't waste your time, you have no choice but to use a headset with a USB plug, or else a USB sound card as an adapter. The box states "Works with Windows" only, although Amazon doesn't make any mention one way or the other.

Audiovox IR1CFF IR Wireless Single Channel Automotive Headset Review

I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey with factory installed Honda RES. I looked for options to replace my OEM Honda wireless headphones that have a flimsy plastic strip that is used for head size adjustment. The strip on the Honda headphones had ripped on 3 sets of headphones now.
I tried out these Audiovox headphones because they were pretty compact like my Honda originals, had a better design for head size adjustment, and this new model folds flat because the ear pieces pivot. They worked great right out of the box, and $30 a piece beats $80 for replacing the originals from Honda! Time will tell about battery life, etc. but first impression is great.

MEElectronics M2-BK Sound-Isolating In-Ear Headphones for iPod, iPhone, MP3/CD/DVD Players (Black) Review

MEElectronics M2-BK Sound-Isolating In-Ear Headphones for iPod, iPhone, MP3/CD/DVD Players (Black)

For the price of these buds, I didn't really expect much from them. I was just looking for a replacement pair of headphones after my Altecs burnt out after a pitiful two weeks. I use my buds alot and I carry them literally wherever I go. I could be going to the mailbox and I'd bring my music with me for fear I may get a craving. (It's an addiction, music is)
Taking them out of the packaging, I noticed that the cable from the buds to the input was extremely sturdy, not like the flimsy cable that you usually receive, for example the cable from the in package Apple headphones you get in your iPod package. I've had these buds for MONTHS and I haven't had ANY problem with them, period. No popping in the headphones, no detached wiring, nothing. Usually headphones last me a month at the most, these have lasted me 7!
The sound quality on these things are astounding, especially for bass heavy songs. On rare occasions, the highs get a little painful but that is my only complaint, everything else about these headphones are top notch.

Maxell NB-201 Stereo Line Neckband Headphones, Silver Review

Maxell NB-201 Stereo Line Neckband Headphones, Silver
Average Reviews:

I bought these headphones for less than $5. Based on my experience, 'phones in this price range generally don't preform very well. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised to find they recepted fairly well to bass and treble with only a little static at the higher ranges, but I can't complain for the price. The ear padding isn't of very high quality - a little scratchy - but keeps everything in place nonetheless. If you're looking for a cheap pair of headphones with satisfactory sound quality, I definitely recommend these.

Curtis EB311-Silver Noise Isolating Stereo Ear Phones (Silver) Review

Curtis EB311-Silver Noise Isolating Stereo Ear Phones (Silver)

Sounds super muffled... but it was like 5 bucks and it's an off-brand so what do you expect? I just needed a beater pair of earbuds that I can use when I go running or when I work out. These will probably make your ears bleed if you're an audiophile. I know I'm not and I still kinda cringe.
Overall the quality is pretty bad, but once again, it's $5 so I guess I can't complain. Next time though, I'd definitely spend an extra $5 for a pair of Skull Candy earphones instead.
Oh well, poor college students make due.

Sized for children over 8 years of age --- Most headphones don't fit children comfortably. The MDR-222KD headphones were designed with a child's head in mind. This allows the child to comfortably wear the headphones without strain that full sized headphones might cause as well as fit that eliminates the need to constantly adjust the headphones. Low volume --- By increasing the impedance on the headphones we have taken into account the sensitive nature of childrens ears to try to eliminate volume issues that full sized earphones might cause. Lightweight --- By sizing these headphones correctly your child can use these headphones on long trips very comfortably.

Monster Cable AICYP iSplitter Mini Y-Adapter for iPod and Mac Review

Monster Cable AICYP iSplitter Mini Y-Adapter for iPod and Mac
Average Reviews:

OK, this is a splitter. You can buy a cheap one anywhere but this one is well-made. The design matches the iPod well but it's functional as well. The black circle is a rubberized material with ridges that provide a good place to hold the splitter while you plug or unplug headphones. It works great.
I bought the splitter to use with a laptop playing DVD's while on vacation so that my wife and I could both listen with headphones (extremely important not to wake kids, especially while trying to enjoy a quiet moment on vacation). It works well on the plane too where you must use headphones to not disturb other passengers.
