(More customer reviews)Recording is easy so far and the video output is just fine. I have an old Panasonic Palmcorder and needed to transfer 40 or 50 mini-DV tapes to DVD. This little unit, though pricey and highly specialized (seems like there would be a computer accessory capable of doing much more, for much less) unit works very nicely so far.
Two exceptions. First, it has a cooling fan that is quite noisy. The blower wouldn't be so bad, but there's a buzzy hum that reminds me of a bad fluorescent lamp that seems to come from the fan housing inside the unit. If I move the unit, the sound gets louder or softer, making me think the fan is probably slightly out of spec.
The 2nd exception is I find no way to include date and time in the DVD content. Maybe it's there and I haven't found it yet, but DVD menus do not show me the date/time stamp option when viewing. It ought to be easy to find.
If there is more than a two minute blank gap on the tape, the MC6 will finish recording. I have at least one or two tapes where the gap is longer. Not sure how it happened but that means I will need to record those manually. Windows 7's version of MovieMaker isn't so picky. At least Sony could have offered the choice to continue looking for additional content.
On a side note, several of my 60 minute tapes have received "too long" messages for the DVD, which I am creating in HQ resolution. That could be a Sony thing or just a compatibility issue but it's odd since they are both rated at 60 minutes. If I press the Eject button, it gives me the option to Finalize and I accept. The DVD will play, and I haven't checked to see how much was lopped off the end of the tape. At least I got most of it and I can always run them manually by PC if necessary.
Recording is transferred in real time and I can watch the content on Palmcorder or VRD-MC6 display. Takes an hour for an hour tape, plus another ten minutes or so, give or take, to "finalize" it.
Who takes a home video and doesn't want the time date stamp within reach? I hope I'm wrong about that, but if Sony left it out, I will be returning the unit (after I transfer the 40 tapes). I will have to do them all again, with time stamp, but at least I'll have something to show for the trouble. I may exchange it anyway because the buzz/hum is kind of grating.

(More customer reviews)I bought the VRDMC10 to convert our family VHS collection to DVD. I have only used it for this purpose so my review is limited to this application. With that in mind I feel that the unit worked flawlessly. It was true "plug-and-play" simplicity and performed as advertised. I also own a Sony HDR-SR11 HD Camcorder, and plan to burn some AVCHD DVDs from the camera on our next vacation. One plus is that we do not own a Blu-ray player and this unit also serves as an AVCHD disk player. The controls and menu are easy to use, and the unit ran unattended for many consecutive hours without fail. I would recommend this to anyone with a library of old VHS media they would like to convert to DVD.

DM220P08 Ezpnp EZ Digimagic Portable DVD Burner With USB Host & Image Viewer Review

(More customer reviews)My EZDigimagic DM220P08 is awesome. I have had my SD burner for over two years and commend the Digimagic people for making it easier to store my photos, and not clog up my hardrive.
When I first got it, I had to have the technician walk me through the steps of inserting the SD card and what button to push, as I have a disability that makes reading the computer jargon instructions difficult. The EZ PnP Tech. people are very accomodating, and helpful!
After I placed the SD chip in the front slot, and placed the CD in the carrier, which looks just like the CD player carrier on your PC or Laptop, and when the DM220P08 had formatted and booted up and was convinced that the CD was ready it went to town, it copied all 150 photos in just about 4-5 minutes, it then initialized the disc, beeps, and spits out a completed CD.
For general shooting, I just use a CD, and it can accomodate four burns on a one gig SD chip before telling you to switch out the CD for a new one when full, and completes the burn. It automatically picks up at the end of the last burn, and starts the next installment, and makes a new folder that shows up on your computer's hard drive area as a EZPnp disc icon. So when you click on the icon, it shows how many burns you have on that CD/DVD.
So all you DSLR users with monster 24mp cameras out there with your 16 gig chips in your cameras, you will just have to use DVD's for your massive storage needs.
DVD's are incredible though, I have only filled one so far, and that was when I shot tons of photos while in Salt Lake City last Thanksgiving. I was doing a Missionary a good deed and taking some shots of his home and family for a Christmas present to him. I shot over 300 6mp full res shots, and it barely even bothered the CD, I could have placed two hundred more shots on that one.
I take it everywhere I go for photo shoots! And with just four DVD's I can down load a ton of shots that would otherwise have crashed my hard drive, and by formatting the chips, can take another ton of shots. I have a cheapy plastic CD file box with all my photo Disc's, and there are over two thousand shots with the name of the shoot written with a sharpie on the CD/DVD's for simple identification .
There is only one drawback that kept me from giving it a five star rating, and that is you can't play the CD or DVD's on the home TV in your DVD player, so without owning the DM220P08 and having the patch cords, you will have to view them on your gift CD/DVD's on your PC or Laptop.
By the way! It is as small as a portable CD player and fits anywhere for trips and photo shoots.
So until EZ PnP people get permission to be able to make a burner that is CD/DVD to TV DVD player compatible, you will just have to view the shots on your PC or Laptop.

Sony VRDMC5 DVDirect DVD Recorder Review

(More customer reviews)Okay - I love this item for what it can NOW do for me and how EASILY it finally ended up doing it. I gave it four instead of five stars because of what I had to DO to get it to work the way I needed it to.
I have fourteen years - wedding, holidays and 3 children - worth of Video Cassettes ranging from 1994 - Sony, HG120, NTSC, Video 8 tapes TO 2008 - Sony, Hi8MP Digital 8 tapes.
My old camera was a Sony and the current camera is also a Sony: Steady Shot Digital 8, Model DCR-TRV460.
The Sony VRD MC5 DV Direct DVID Recorder I have can, and NOW DOES, burn DVDs from my Sony Handycam with both types of tapes via a Sony DV Direct Cable. However - it did not, out of the box, purchased in December 2007, burn my old tape formats to DVD with Audio. The Audio was gone and I could not get it to burn!
I had to waste about ten DVDs trying to figure out what the heck I did wrong. I scoured the manual, I bought two types of DVDs, looked here on Amazon, went to the Sony site. NOTHING on WHY the audio was missing!
When I finally found a way to contact Sony - live chat did not work and I could not get anyone on the phone - via email they went back and forth with me in email telling me that the Software Version on the Recorder had to be updated. They gave me a link that I could not find by navigating the site on my own, thus needing their intervention. I found the download, and followed directions, I tried burning the file to CD in many different ways and STILL the software would not upgrade! They never called me or gave me a number, it took days to try to figure out what was happening and they finally told me how to call someone.
I did it again while I was on the phone with them. Still the Recorder did not recognize the CD I was burning or the file I downloaded from the site. They made me call back, I was transferred twice, someone took my info and it took from 1/11/08 to 1/22/08 to get a CD that they burned at Sony and shipped to me.
I just came up today, followed the very same directions just with their CD and the software upgraded without a hitch. I just burned a tape from 1994 and the audio is there!!
After spending three years and more than $700 in software for my computer, a DVD Burner for my computer and finally a standalone Sony VHS/Camera player and VHS/DVD burner but none, and I do mean NONE of them - were able to do the job. Even the standalone unit never consistenly burned quality DVDs from the Camera and you had to tie up your tv for hours while it burned to DVD only for the "finalization" of it to not "take" so you had an empty DVD which was not R/W. Waste of time!
Please note that I am a technical person so not ignorant. I am just short on time so I wanted something that would get all my old moves onto DVD with a PHD - Push Here Dummy - functionality and the Sony VRD MC5 device did it.
The struggles, aggravation, wasted time it took me to get to today were worth it but PUH-LEASE Sony. Get a grip and put the information out there. Be proactive! Make it available! Communicate! Tell the vendors that sell your product what they are going to have to tell their shoppers do to get it to work. Update your manual. Whatever you have to do - no consumer should have to hunt like I did for weeks to try to find a way to fix something Sony knew about when they shipped the devices.

Good idea with this product, decent design, the software is really slow and could use some work (computer is brand new and does everything else very fast) the remote that came with it does not work at all, but you can use the on-screen buttons just as easily. The antenna that comes with it seems to work ok but i tried a larger self powered antenna on it and all i got was static on every tv station, havent tried the cable settings yet, the FM radio works, just be sure you close the program out completely before unplugging this unit from the USB port, or it will cause ur system to crash about 1/4 of the time and freeze up the other 3/4 of the time.. all in all, i will continue to use it until it no longer works but i wont buy another one or recomend it to friends

Dazzle DVD Recorder Review

(More customer reviews)So many reviews for devices like this are full of complaints regarding the output quality, both video and audio. I started reviewing the cheaper devices and tried to spend my way out of the bad reviews but I never could. Devices priced from 20 to 120 all carried the same complaints in one form or another. Poor quality output, jagged edges, dropped frames, audio getting out of sync with the video.
I was so confused that in the end I finally threw up my hands and ordered the Dazzle. With a few caveats, I'm glad I did. If you care to use the information, this is what I learned:
S-video cable input is needed if you intend to view the output in more than a small computer window. Don't even think you will be happy with TV sized results using only AV cables.
The output is best directed to a hard drive folder and then burned to DVD later. I import the result into a video editor (ULead) and trim and edit as needed. Your tapes are probably like mine and have have multiple unrelated events that should not be on the same DVD.
Don't mess with the computer while copying. I turned off screen savers and updates to prevent disruption.
My machine is a single core Pentium 4, 2.8Ghz , with only 512MB ram, USB2, running Windows XP service pack 3.

Mitsubishi VHS SVHS Digital VCR HQ HS-HD2000U Review

(More customer reviews)I recently bought 4 of these Mitsubishi HS-HD2000U's brand new and this DVHS deck is very nice. Just connect a single firewire cable from the HDTV to the deck and control the deck through the TV's firewire interface. This is one of the few methods of archiving HDTV content flagged copy once from premium channels like HBO, Showtime, Starz, Cinemax... Sadly newer HDTV's do not come with firewire anymore, so you would connect the firewire from the Mits to your cable box with the firewire cable. Regardless, this deck seems rock solid compared to the JVC D-VHS decks, which I only use for D-Theater playback. You can also connect the deck to your Mac and use their firewire SDK to control the deck.

(More customer reviews)At first the video was garbled. After reading an on-line trouble shooting guide I found out that not all USB ports are the same. My laptop has 3 ports, only one of which is an Enhanced USB host controller. The others are USB universal host controllers. After connecting to the enhanced one it works great. If it doesn't work, just try other ports until you get a good picture on the preview screen. You can find a list of your USB ports on the Device Manager in Control Panel. (I'm using Windows Vista).

(More customer reviews)I've stopped using my old hitachi video camera(from 2001)awhile ago since I never liked dragging it out, setting it up, charging it, finding a tape or lugging it around etc. But, none the less, I still have at least 10-12 mini cassette(8mm) tapes that needed to be put on DVD, as well as some old VHS tapes too. I haven't seen any of these home movies in years because watching a VHS is aggravating(waiting for it rewind?! geez. hello old school). I was so excited to hear about this and figured it would be a great idea to finally transfer my stuff.
Out of the box, it will literally take you moments to set up and start recording. If you're taping from a VCR, make sure you plug into the line OUT on the back of the VCR.
It formats the DVD disc for you, and when you press play on your video camera(or VCR) you also hit the big main button on the DVDirect to begin recording. If there's snow in your video for more then a few seconds, it pauses recording and resumes when the video kicks back in. You can choose 5 min, 10 min or 15 minute automatic chapter inserts, so it's easy to navigate a long video. Sound is good, but only as good as it was originally. If you have crappy sound on your old video camera, it'll be crappy on DVD. I wasn't expecting it to turn my stuff HD or work miracles, so this is exactly what I wanted and expected.
The screen on the DVDirect is easy to see and tells you how long you've been recording, when it's stopped, it tells you how long is left on the DVD to record. Only a few buttons, so it's simple to stay on track and not get lost in countless options, which means it won't be hard to figure out even for someone who's not good with technology. It does record live time, so you have to have a little patience. Press play, record, and walk away. Also, amazingly simple to finalize the DVD and pop it in a player and begin watching. I also notice on the box it says you can make photo slide shows with music. Pretty cool! Definitely a great buy for anyone with tons of old VHS and mini cassettes.

Sony VRDMC3 DVDirect DVD Recorder Review

(More customer reviews)I received the Sony VC30 model for Christmas, and enchanged it for the MC3 to get the color screen (and glad I did). I was a bit leary after reading the reviews here, but I've just finished converting our entire collection of home movies from VHS, 8mm, hi8 and miniDV tapes to DVD.
I've used only Sony brand, single-layer blanks (both +R and -R, but +R seems to yield better playback) and have had no problems. I've made close to 200 DVDs with only two "coasters" that would not finalize after recording. I've done most of my recording on the SP mode, putting two hours on a DVD. After testing different settings, I couldn't tell any difference (viewed on 55" and 32" TVs) between the HQ and SP settings for my older videos (some 25 years old), but could definitely tell on the newer recordings, especially those with a lot of motion (such as water skiing and other sports). So for those, I chose only the HQ setting.
All recording is done in real time, and there have been weekend days when the thing has been going all day and evening. I've connected it to a VCR, and 8mm and miniDV camcorders. When using the VCR, the color screen on the MC3 is very handy. Using an S-cable yields slightly better picture than standard video cables. For the miniDV camcorder, I use firewire and this has an added benefit of recording only the recorded video on the camcorder, shutting off when the recorded video ends. (When using a VCR or older camcorder, you have to watch for it to end and manually turn off the burn.)
The menus the MC3 creates are fine for my purposes. It will create a new "title," which shows up as a separate "window" on the start-up menu, every time the MC3 is stopped (if you just pause it, it won't create a new title). I set the MC3 to create chapter stops every five minutes, which is handy when skipping through video on playback. If I'm burning a DVD of, say, my daughter's birthdays, I'll create a new "title" for every birthday. On playback, each "title" shows up separately on the start-up menu, but the entire contents of the DVD will playback at once, with a new "title" starting when another ends. For misc. tapes that have a variety of short segments, I've found it easier to record it all to a DVD, then view it and note the times of the various segments. Then I re-record it to DVD, creating separate "titles" by stopping the MC3 when a segment ends. (I'm keeping the first copies as backups.) I haven't found a way to create a chapter stop manually; there are some instances where this would be handy.
Overall, the MC3 has been fantastic. I've been putting off this project for years, not wanting to have to do it via computer, and now I have it all on DVD, at reasonable cost.

JVC DR-MV80B - DVD recorder/ VCR combo Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this from HSN a couple weeks after getting a 65 in Mitsubishi HDTV from them as well. I was thinking about getting a blu-ray player. When I saw this unit on air last weekend, I decided to try it. I really don't want to replace my movies again. I'm still replacing the VHS ones with DVDs as I find them on sale. This upconverts the regular DVD very nicely. The other bonus was that I could record my personal VHS tapes on DVD. I have my wedding and family functions that I would hate to lose. Not only was this easy to do, the DVD came out better than the VHS version. Just make sure you finalize the disc so you can play it on any DVD player.
I personally don't record anything from TV. But, there are several ways to set this up either with an HDMI cable, directly to your TV, thru a home theater system, or your cable/satellite box. It's not point and click to set up. You have to manually set it up to work, but it will record. As another reviewer stated, this will not record protected material. It's not the machine's fault. It's actually against the law to do so. Why would they allow you to record something for free when the production company wants to sell you their series on DVD?
For me, I got this to watch my current DVDs in the best high def format possible and transfer old VHS to DVD. So, this totally meets my expectations and then some. It does a fantastic job of upconverting DVDs and the VHS tapes look pretty good too. If you are looking for a great upconverting DVD player, that is a DVD-R, and has a VCR, too, this is the unit for you.
