It is July 2010. We bought this in April 2009. Yesterday all functionality stopped. The light shows up on the unit when it is plugged in, but it does not turn on. It will charge the iPods, but no longer plays music. The 1 year warranty has passed. I'd still recommend this product. My wife used it everyday. She carries it with her around the house. I would recommend getting the 2-year or 3-year extended warranty.

I did the research on these a while back and was sure I was going to wait until I could get a Bose. After reading all of the reviews here, I decided to get this little guy.
We use it everyday. Actually, it is in use most of the day. We use it in the kitchen, in the living room when we're reading the paper, I took it with me when I was painting our old house we are about to sell and set it outside. The volume cranked great outside, and the battery lasts and lasts. Keeps my ipod topped up too.
The important thing for us is that the sound is good quality at low volumes (we have small children). And yes, it is perfect. Good crisp quality. The bass is not a subwoofer, but it is impressive how well it sounds coming out of such a tiny device.
Don't research any more products. If you need something that you can take with you just about anywhere and don't want to have to worry about plugging it in, and you want the sound to be great, and you want the device to look great - stop researching, stop stressing, just BUY THIS THING. You'll be glad you did.

(More customer reviews)I was worried that for $9 I would be getting something incredibly cheap and flimsy. Not so. These speakers are pretty well constructed, plenty loud, and fold up into compact little cube for storage/transportation.
I was also impressed that the product comes with a USB-power cable, so you can power it off a USB port (or through batteries of course).
I should point out that cradle shown in the picture is really just a "shelf" that the ipod can sit in. It is adjustable (and removable) so that it will accommodate an iPod of any depth. However, the audio connects to the iPod's headphone jack -- not through the dock. So, it's not quite as elegant a solution as some of the other (more expensive) iPod speakers out there (i.e., it won't charge the iPod and the iPod is really just sitting there), but the advantage is the speakers can be connected to just about anything with a line out (for example my Powerbook, whose speakers are rather soft).
Overall, a great deal for the money.

LaCie 130811 Bus Powered USB Speakers Review

(More customer reviews)As something of an audiophile and after reading the earlier reviews, I ordered these speakers with some trepidation. But after auditioning them connected to a MacBook Air I have to say these are dynamite little speakers and very good value. They produce more than adequate volume, reasonable base extension for their size, and good clarity and definition in the mid and high range.
For casual listening, they are a fine upgrade for subpar built-in computer speakers, but with no heavy power adapter to lug around, these compact speakers are especially great for taking on trips. (LaCie includes a padded case for safely transporting the speakers, easily worth $10 on its own!)
Just plug the primary speaker into your laptop USB and connect the secondary speaker to the primary speaker, then set the iTunes equalizer to "small speakers" and turn on medium sound enhancement in preferences, and sit back and listen to what I found to be satisfying and surprisingly immersive sound. Great for when watching DVDs. (Alert readers will wonder how I could play DVDs and use the speakers at the same time on the single MacBook Air USB port. The trick is to first rip the DVD on to the hard-drive using the MBA USB DVD player, unplug, then plug in the speakers to play.)
But you don't even to have a computer to benefit from these speakers. There is a Line In socket for audio from iPods and other MP3 players. LaCie thoughtfully includes a white mini-jack to mini-jack cable for this purpose. Power can be from a 9V DC source (not included) or via the USB cable. Yes, I discovered you can plug the USB cable into a small (Sonnos) iPod USB Power Adapter and it works! How's that for a complete, portable powered iPod sound system!

SIIG SoundWave TravelMate 2.0 Speakers - Portable speakers - 5 Watt (total) Review

(More customer reviews)I got mine for about $20 at Fry's electronics but they have sound quality of something I would expect for $40-$50 so they retail appropriately if a bit high for someone who doesn't care if the sound is great. These things can get pretty darn loud without losing sound quality. As a trucker I travel a lot and use these with my netbook I travel with, and I must say these speakers are EXTREMELY convenient. They have a magnetic rim or something that lets them clip together face to face so they look like an egg when pressed together, they sound interesting when you play music with them face to face like that! The cords are then removed from both the computer and the speakers themselves and with a little twist-tie you are good to go! They're about the same size as a Iphone or wallet. They don't have a lot of 'bulk' to their weight so they're nice and light.
I haven't dropped mine yet so I can't tell you how strong they are, they're solid so they're fine for small drops off a table but I wouldn't suggest throwing them out of a moving vehicle at freeway speeds.
My only wish is the company didn't make them quite as flat, or made the rims come out a little more. That way you could wrap the cords up nicely and keep them between the speakers as their own box and never have to worry about misplacing them.
I've gone through a lot of these type of small speakers over the past 6 years, and I have to say I'll only buy these from now on whenever I am buying small light duty speakers for whatever reason.
As of right now I am a consistent buyer of Sony MDR-J10 h.ear Headphones, and these SIIG speakers to meet my low budget auditory needs. When I make some good money or companies lend their equipment to me to review I'll be happy to share my thoughts on high end equipment like Bose.

(More customer reviews)OK, so you want to play your two hundred dollar iPod to someone on the move. These little speakers will surprise you, as you take them out of your pack, unfold the unique design, plug in your iPod (or whatever sound device, it has a standard mini-plug), and bang! you have a sound system. So, it doesn't rival the quality of my 34 speaker six amp system at home. But it is surprising how well these little guys do sound. A steal at six bucks. Everyone I've used them on has been very impressed. A plus is that they are amplified speakers, so you don't get the "barely there" sound of passive speakers out of an iPod. They run off a standard USB port for power, I use my iPod power adapter, which was a mistake, as I have to decide which batteries to run down if I use it for music at night (I sleep better with music playing). I would suggest going ahead and getting the inexpensive power adapter, that way you could keep the iPod charged even as you listened to powered speakers.
Most of the time, I use them at a friend's house, and depend on the four AAA batteries that will run this puppy for some time, even at louder volume levels.
True audiophiles may put these down, but for the average person who's best sound system is in thier car, they work great. I would give it five stars, except for the lack of bundling both the USB cord and power supply, and because it really will let you down for the low frequencies. It is not a true audiophile speaker system. It is, for the price, one of the best deals on external iPod speakers. (again, it will work with any device with a standard mini-jack, I only use iPod as a term for generic MP3/CD/DVD/Laptop etc.)
These probably are better speakers than are found in most laptop computers, so they are a good choice for that use as well. The cord is a bit short, even for an iPod, it just barely stretches out enough to get to the top of the iPod. This is because of the ingenious storage system: the cable wraps around the battery/amplifier case and locks in place with a small tab on the jack.
I've seen the same speakers in systems that cost five times what this one does, which was $5.88 plus tax and shipping, so it came to around ten bucks in the end.
What it isn't: A high end audio system.
What it is: An impressive device that is a great design for portable audio. Sounds bigger than it is, you probably won't have to turn it all the way up. Rugged enough to be tossed about in a backpack. (I do sometimes wish it weren't as chunky folded up, but this design easily protects the speakers. Too big to carry in a pocket, you'll need some kind of bag to carry these everywhere, like I do. You'll hear more on the standard iPod earbuds, but at least you can share your music, and most people I play it for couldn't tell a high end audio system from a tin can, so for the money, it's really all you need.
I also like this product because it's black instead of that nasty Apple White. My iPod and protective cover are also black, so it matched my system unlike the more accessible white unit (sold under a different name).
Bottom line: Great little speakers at a bargain basement price.

LaCie Firewire Speakers Review

(More customer reviews)Ok, I was intrigued by this unique idea, speakers that do NOT connect to the audio output jack on your computer, and did not use the already overcrowded USB, but rather are bus powered, getting power from your computer, connected to the FireWire port instead. But why do I need this? Every computer I have ever owned had an audio output port, and so far, I have not had reason to dislike the audio coming from it. I wanted to know why I needed these over other USB or direct audio speakers.
So I started iTunes, kicked off The Beatles LOVE soundtrack, and was ready to find out why. Music came pouring from my rather good Sony desktop speakers, which I immediately unplugged. I knew what they sounded like. Audio switched to the rather poor speakers inside my iMac G5, and it was time to put a stop to that lousy sound by hooking up these cute little things from LaCie.
Packaged well, much like a MacBook computer from Apple, in a small black box, these (5.3" high by 3.9" wide by 3.5" deep) white and black speakers were easy to hook up. Well, sort of. I simply plugged the already attached FireWire cable on the "Main Speaker" into my Mac. Then, from the secondary speaker I took the audio cable and connect it to the main speaker. That is all there is to connect. There is no power brick and no batteries are needed because these will get their power and audio from FireWire. Listed as the world's first bus-powered speaker, the small, 8-watt amp (4-watts per channel) is powered directly from your computer via FireWire. For me, one less AC power brick is an immediate plus right off.
Unfortunately, if you start with the wrong speaker, the audio wire on the secondary speaker looks EXACTLY like a standard audio plug, just like the one you might expect to connect to the Mac's audio output jack (except that it is a mono plug.) And, if you do plug this into your Mac's audio jack, you will get audio, albeit very soft and only form one speaker, which should be a clue that something is wrong. (Perhaps this wire's plug should have used a different type of connector?)
So, why was sound still coming from the Mac's speakers if these were all attached correctly? What did I forget? Turning to the included Quick Install Guide, I saw that they were indeed installed correctly. But reading a "Note" lower on the page also said that if you do not hear any sound, you need to select the speakers manually. The Mac has a manual speaker selection? This was new to me.
Yes, this is done in System Preferences>Sound>Output. This was a place on my Mac that I had never been to before, and sure enough, I can now select either "Internal Speakers" (or Audio Out if you have other speakers plugged into the Mac's speaker jack) or "LaCie FireWire speakers (2491)". So I switched it to the FireWire selection and immediately music poured loudly from these little gems. But now which speaker was right and which left, as LaCie labels them Main and Secondary instead? I opened an audio clip that has audio only on the right channel and it seems that the one with the FireWire connector goes on the right. Of course, I got them backwards. Hey LaCie, a small L and R on the speakers would be nice.
Despite their small size, the sound was rather good. These will not compete with higher end audio speakers costing hundreds of dollars, but compared to many sub $100 speakers for computers, including direct audio and the USB versions, these stand up quite well. Input signal is digital at 24bit / 96kHz, a fact of which most will not care. But, if you use an older PowerPC Mac, these connect via the Midi FireWire Control Panel, and that must be set correctly. With a frequency response of 90Hz-20kHz, midrange and highs were clean and clear, and typically lacked that "tinny" sound many small speakers of this size suffer. Although, some of that tinny sound did manage to come through on a few songs with strong treble passages. Bass response was weak at the low end, no surprise given the small 2" "high excursion neodymium driver" speakers inside. But the lower end of the midrange was strong and it typically made up for that missing bass. Overall volume was on the high side and these speakers played considerably louder then other USB and audio speakers at the same computer volume setting. You may have to turn down both the computer's master volume setting as well as the apps volume (like in iTunes) to get a level low enough for a environment like an office cubicle or at home at night. The speakers themselves have no volume control. Distortion was low, unless you turn them up very loud, at which point the small amp started to clip and the small speakers could no longer handle that much drive. That said, these will put out a good amount of volume before that happens, especially considering their size. In general, I was surprised that such a small package could sound this good.
There is a CD included, and for Mac users, it is not needed as it simply contains documentation, products, and accessories folders where you can register your product, or buy the optional power supply, cables, and even a FireWire card should you need one (why did you buy these speakers?) These will also run on Windows machines, and the CD contains a setup program to install the necessary software on that machine before they can be used. They worked fine on my Windows XP computer, but LaCie says they are not Vista compatible, and I did not try.On the bottom of the main speaker is an "audio input" plug where you can connect an external audio device like an iPod, or a computer without FireWire. A small interconnect cable is included in the box. To use such a device, the speakers need to be powered. That means you can leave them connected to a powered computer (so the FireWire power is active), or, to use them stand alone, you will need an optional external power supply. There is a connector for that on the bottom as well. Still connected to my Mac, I connected my iPod to the audio in line, and pressed play. Yes, if you turn on both audio sources, they will both play through the speakers together. Pressing stop on iTunes allowed me to listen to my iPod through the speakers, and again, they sounded equally as good from the iPod. I am bothered however that the external power supply is an option. Given their $100 price tag, LaCie should have included it for iPod users or laptops that do not have FireWire. Of course, if you do not have FireWire, why would you buy these? But still, you might want to carry them with you for portable use.
The look may not be for everyone. LaCie likes to do outlandishly designed products (have you seen that USB hub?), and these are a little strange for speakers. To me, they look like miniature air vents as seen on a boat or ship. And while I liked them, others who saw them thought they were a bit odd. The outside is a glossy white with a black "circle" where the speaker sits on the front, twisting the cylinder shape forward to face the speaker to the front. I was reminded of a slinky for some reason. On the bottom is a rubber ring that keeps them from slipping and sliding on the desktop. Cables come out the bottom as well, through a small slot to allow the speaker to sit flat on the desk. I was disappointed at the length of the included cables. If you computer is not close to where you screen is, or is on the wrong side of your desk (since the FireWire cable is on the right speaker), you may need an extension cable. The wire between the speakers could stand to be longer as well.
I also wanted to know if using the speakers effected my FireWire connection. Since I have drives connected to the other FireWire port, I wanted to find out if these caused problems with the audio. I copied a 284 Mb folder from a FireWire drive to the internal drive with music playing, and again while not playing, and repeated this several times. Given the relatively small amount of bandwidth needed for audio, I did not expect a difference in time, but would I hear the music cut out as the disk drive needed more bandwidth? With music playing, the average transfer time was 28 to 29 seconds, and no audio cut out or distortion was noticed at all. Again with music not playing the average was about the same, so it appears that this does not impact drive use at all, and hard drive use does not affect the audio.
So back to my original question, why these over other speakers in this price range? The small above issues aside, compared to other small speakers, these performed as well or better than most others in their size and price range. And the lack of yet another a power brick is a strong plus. If you are like me, there are no free plugs available anywhere near your computer, and yet another wire missing from the desktop is a good thing too. And my USB is already overtaxed, so I do not want speakers sucking up that bandwidth or power either. Their small size is also a plus, as is the ability to connect a secondary audio input. But what about that FireWire connection, does it really make a difference? The obvious argument that this is an all-digital connection to the speaker so it sounds better must be taken with a grain of salt. These speakers are nowhere near the quality and fidelity one would need to ever detect any difference between the supposed noisy analog output for speakers and an all-digital connection. And besides, the connection to the secondary speaker IS an analog connection anyway. Hello? But if your need is for small, good sounding set of powered speakers that do not require AC power, are easy to install, and your USB is already busy enough, these are a good choice for you.

Okay, this thing has all the technology - It's got bluetooth connectivity, including the ability to play music from another device wireless and answer phone calls (built-in mic). It has an SD card slot, and a USB slot for other devices (haven't tried this out yet). It has an iPod dock. It'll even rip your CDs. I haven't seen anything on the market with this many options.
* Ease of Use (Interface)
This is where things start to go a bit off. It's not the easiest device to use. The display doesn't show the most relevant information. For example, if you're looking at it in bluetooth mode, it just keeps repeating the words "BLUETOOTH" in caps on the screen. But that's redundant because I already know that fact due to the big flashing blue light in the corner. Also, though this thing looks like a clock radio, it doesn't function very well as one (it rarely shows the time throughout the various functions - alarm is hard to set).
* Sound
It's fair - Not a whole lot of bass, mids are a little muddy, highs are very nice. Having said that, I don't have a comparable reference - I'm comparing it to my home stereo system and the bose wave radio.
* Quality / How's it Look
A good looking device - Definitely doesn't look cheap. It's got a big back end on it, but overall isn't too large. Fits on my nightstand just fine. The buttons are a little plasticky.
* In Summary
I'm going to continue using it - if only because there's no stereo out there that has this mix of features. I bought a bluetooth adapter for my ipod touch. It's very cool that I can be sitting anywhere in my bedroom and picking music. And if it runs short on batteries, I can drop it right into the ipod dock. But... I'm going to have to dig my 15-year-old clock radio out of the closet.

For such small speakers, they deliver good sound. In fact, I love this product so much, I've ordered two more and am thinking of ordering more for gifts! This is definitely NOT a stereo system, but it is great for the kitchen, bedroom and office.

(More customer reviews)This is a great portable player for kids on a trip or a visit--a wonderful cure for "I'm bored" in a pinch (including for other people's children that are brought somewhere ill-prepared for the time. But, although that's been a great by-product, I really got this for myself initially. I have a lot of very tedious work to do at home, mindless and boring desk work, and--after frying the video card of my laptop playing dvds--thought an inexpensive dvd player would be a much better alternative.
It's been great. Just plug in and go. It also has an A/V connector (supplied) so it was easy to use as a dvd player hooked up to a tv or monitor with A/V input. The picture quality on a large screen isn't "amazing"--this isn't blue-ray--but I thought it was perfectly fine.
It also plays just as well off the car battery (connector supplied). And the small screen (about a third bigger than PSP--and about 4x bigger than a smart phone screen) was perfectly fine, too.
All in all, if you have realistic expectation (and happen on to the Amazon price discount--it alternates among the colors), it's a great little player.

For the price and size of the speakers, I find it to be surprisingly powerful. It's recommended to use within three feet while listening, but I have it across the room and it still sounds great.
The only thing that would make this item perfect would be if it had a remote. Similar products have them, but I was more interested in good sound quality without spending 200 dollars.
Overall, I would definitely recommend it.

Altec Lansing inMotion iM600 Firewire-Charging Portable Audio System for iPod (Black) Review

Design and Features:
Bose Sound Dock: Cabinet made of plastic. Appears to have two 2.5" acoustic suspension (enclosed) drivers under a metallic grill, with a whole bunch of added physical structures that look to be waveguides and / or signal processors. Bose keeps details on this pretty much obscured, but wattage estimates I've seen on the net put power output at roughly 50-60 watts and based on my own comparative experience, I would agree. Some commentators think the unit has four drivers rather than two, but I see only two beneath the grill and I am not going to disassemble the unit. Some Bose haters on the net claim frequency response on the SD is capped at a mere 10,000 kHz, which I personally doubt, as treble rich music I've played on this sounds fine, and no reliable net source makes this claim. Ipod docks in a front-mounted bay. My 5.5 G 30 GB feels rather loosely supported, but no major issues.
No line-in or out. Indeed, no console controls at all except a volume up and volume down button. Simple remote, though very reliable and with good range. The power wart is bizarrely large and bulky, plus is also in two sections, making it seem like you're going to be powering up a railgun or supercollider rather than a relatively low powered music player. The design is sturdy and attractive overall, but the lack of any special features whatsoever is dismaying, perhaps symptomatic of Bose's condescending "electronics for idiots" philosophy. Charges Ipod as long as it is docked, when playing or when off.
Griffin Amplifi: Cabinet made of wood, looks like small shoebox. Has two 2.75" drivers front mounted and a bottom mounted 5" woofer with a bass port. Griffin in the worst Bose tradition refuses to disclose many tech statistics on their unit, but my power estimate puts this at about 30-40 watts, not really much different from the Bose. (To sound twice as loud needs a 10 times (1000%) increase in wattage, so the Bose advantage of maybe 33% more power should not really give much real world benefit.) Frequency response per mfgr is 50-16,000 kHz which seems a bit unbelievable on the low end, but feasible enough on the higher end. Ipod docks on top and sticks awkwardly out of the unit like a control tower, but fit is snugger than on Sound Dock which makes me feel more reassured.
There is a line-in and not much more. Big blue-lit knob controls on-off and volume. Remote is a copy of the Bose's with the same simple functions. Range and aiming tolerance is inferior to both the Bose and the Altec, but certainly adequate. Annoyingly, the Amplifi only charges an Ipod docked in it when the Amplifi is on; if the Ipod is docked and the Griffin is turned off, no charging. Either Griffin's engineers are idiots, or they decided to save a few pennies in the design.
Altec Lansing IM600: Smallest unit, with plastic cabinet and cool fold up dock that also has on / off switch. Has two 2" acoustic suspension drivers, and a separate subwoofer out line that I did not use. Also has video out and line-in ports, plus a decent FM tuner and telescoping antenna. Tons and tons of features in comparison to our other competitors. Plus unit has an internal rechargeable battery which lasts for roughly 7 hours, and an "SFX" stereo expander DSP switch. Altec is honest enough to give the power stats on the unit of 14 watts. Though this is less than either other dock, as stated above the actual volume difference is not reflected in the numbers. Frequency range is not specified, but it seems to go as high as either of the other competitors, with perhaps less bass extension. Front mounted dock that gently leans the Ipod against a reinforced acoustically neutralized spot on the unit so vibrations will not affect the Ipod during playback.
IM600 also has a beautiful backlit display which stays lit while the unit is plugged in to AC power. The Altec charges Ipods as long as there is an AC connection, whether or not the Altec is turned on. The IM600 does not charge Ipods when the dock is running on its own rechargeable battery. The remote is also IR like the others in the test, and is somewhere between the Bose and Griffin in terms of range and responsiveness. Remote lets you control SFX mode and access four radio presets. (Though if you lose the remote, you will have no preset control at all, so try not to do that.)
Sound:
Bose: Excellent deep bass, controlled and accurate, never boomy. Mid-range is emphasized, so guitars and vocals sound especially fine. Treble appears a bit less impressive, but trebly stuff like Vivaldi and Tallis sounds just fine. The Bose sounds better with rock and jazz than with classical, but not dramatically so. The Bose sounds equally good at both low and high end, and the unit can be played at max volume with no distortion, probably due to Bose's manipulation of the source signal. Nevertheless, the Bose sounds very good at all volumes and with virtually any type of music. The Bose can also fill up any small or medium room with sound, and can even be a decent sound system for a reasonably quiet large room. Stereo separation was the best of all three speakers, unimpressive when compared to a formal stereo with speakers a couple of yards apart, but certainly very much a feat from speakers separated from each other by less than a foot. Detail is excellent with many-layered music like works by Nine Inch Nails and Dead Can Dance being expertly and precisely performed.
I am no fan of Bose, finding the sound from their home theater systems to be artificial, inaccurate, compromised, pricey, and over-hyped. However, in the case of the SoundDock, with the goal of creating generally acceptable sound from lossy sources, Bose has executed the concept impeccably well. The music as played may not be dead-on accurate, but it is not noticeably deficient and sounds loud, detailed, and clear at any volume. Kind of like McDonald's fries, the SoundDock is by far the jewel in the rather uneven portfolio of Bose equipment. Even if you hate the idea of Bose, or have disliked their other audio products, the SoundDock may well amaze you.
Griffin: Bass is about as good as the SoundDock, maybe lower extension, but roughly the same precision and balance. Griffin is to be commended for not going crazy and letting the big 5" woofer run roughshod over the sound of the Amplifi. The big woofer does not make the Amplifi sound better than the Bose at the low end, but on the other hand it doesn't sound worse, and it is also much cheaper. Griffin was not aiming to beat the Bose here, but rather to equal it with a lower price and simpler design. Mid-range is another strong point here, and treble is also a bit lacking, like in the Bose, but not too much so. Classical pieces still sound very good on the Griffin.
Where the Amplifi does lose ground to Bose is in the fancy stuff. Stereo separation is non-existent, and detail is nowhere near as precise as on the Bose. This sounds like a big loud mono speaker. Low volumes especially lose a lot of fine subtlety, and distortion is heard at the very highest volumes (though to be fair, no one would really play this unit that loud, as it is probably 100 dB or more.) The acoustically tuned all wood cabinet adds little to the sound signature of the Amplif vis a vis the plastic cabinet of the Bose. The lack of stereo separation, detail, and full clarity throughout all volume ranges is where the added cost of the Bose is most evident and justifiable. Most users will like the Griffin though; it mimics the sound signature of the Bose convincingly, has a retro wood cabinet design, and has at least one important feature that the Bose lacks, a line-in, all of this at a street value of 1/3rd of what the Bose goes for. This will make the Amplif a great solution for most users, especially those on a budget. However, the added price of the Bose does create a noticeably superior sound in at least some aspects.
Altec Lansing: The IM600 takes a different path than its rivals, aiming for a more treble oriented sound, with adequate bass and very good mids. The IM600 sounds crisp and detailed, but lacks the low end punch of the Bose or Griffin. The 600 has a separate subwoofer out line and a 3" sub is available separately from Altec Lansing for $50. No idea how it sounds. This is the best of these three units for classical music reproduction, but most music sounds fine on it. Even bass heavy music is more than acceptable for most listeners; you just don't feel the low end as prominently as you do with the other two docks, but depending on your expectations, this may be just fine.
Stereo separation is not especially strong on the Altec, to be expected when the drivers are all of 7" apart. The SFX mode is helpful in this regard, and does give some stereo sound effect, and really does not hurt sound reproduction in any way, so I normally leave the effect on. Stereo is far more noticeable than the Griffin, but less pronounced than the Bose. (However, even the Bose offers far less stereo than one might get from properly placed PC satellite speakers, let alone a true home stereo system...) Clarity and detail on the IM600 is excellent, rivaling the Bose in many cases. Brass and drums sound a bit more real and crisp on the Bose, and this plus the better low end will give the nod to the SoundDock over the IM600 for most listeners, unless you listen to nothing but classical. The IM600 distorts a bit at maximum volume, but not terribly so. It sounds as good at low volumes as it does at normal (medium level) settings.
Value:
Bose: Normally listed at $300 and almost never discounted. The new "portable" SoundDock just came out as of this writing and sells for $400. If Bose can maintain this exceptionally high price for the newer model, SoundDock prices may stay at $300, but if the newer...Read more›

Ultra-Thin Travel Speaker Review

* Folds flat making it easy to put in a backpack, much like you would a writing pad or small notebook.
* When not in use and folded closed, the case protects the speaker membrane.
* Long battery life
* Surprisingly full sound, and can sound better if you use the correct EQ settings on your audio device.
* Definitely a must have if you are watching a movie with some friends on a laptop and want everyone to be able to hear it.
WARNING: Do NOT stow the speaker in your packpack with the the input cable plugged in. I used to, and now I have to order another one because the cable got mashed by something and put enough stress on the internal workings of the jack that it broke and I can no longer connect a device to it. So take it out and you should have no problems with your device. I will be getting another one to replace it.

(More customer reviews)Excellent for travellers, but as a fellow audiophile, I have had to accept some shortcomings of the amp. The speakers are full range and the enclosure has no harmonics of its own which is rare in portables. Bass is warm and drives down low enough to make you wonder how the 2 little 2 3/4" drivers can produce warm bass guitar chords with aplomb. The tweeters are efficient and high sensitivity. Infact, they are accurate with music but also reveal both a benefit and a flaw of the design:
If you want to fall asleep to it next to your bed, the background hiss thats present at all volumes consitently(it doesnt get louder as you turn it up)this hiss could annoy you. I can sleep to it, but end up facing the tweeters away from me to attenuate the hiss. I only notice it between songs and when I am in very quiet settings. If you can tolerate placing it away about 6-10 feet and don't mind hearing the hiss during very quiet sections, its a great unit. I never notice the hiss outside or at engagements or with others. If you want something thats built tougher than other items I have owned both by Altec and other vendors, I will add that the battery capability is why you need to deal with the shortcomings of a Class D amp, whereas IC based solid state units are cleaner on the sound, but will never let you crank tunes for 8 hours on the beach at good volume so you can actually hear the sound will wading/swimming close to shore. The conveniences, and ALTEC's time to market with an evolved product explain some of the nuances I describe, but this will not be a choice I second guess, I have HiFi where I need it, at home, in my car and via my $500 headphones, but at the beach, in a hotel pool, or after nice day on the boardwalk, its a great way to share music for hours with good sound, great design and outstanding build quality. I chose it over their iM3, iM5 and the iM7 wont do, its too big! The iM11 has good sound and less hiss but not for the on the go, outdoors types. This item appears to have been well thought out and will be an addition to anyone who wants to utilized their ipod on the go in addition to an active lifestyle in environemnts less than optimal for the desk monger speakers so ubiquitous in the iPod speaker arena.

Here is my input, after comparing to a similar 10.2" Haier HLT10:
1) Regarding the other review on the audio, you can't expect much from 1"
speakers. This Viore was better (clearer sound) than the Haier HLT10.
2) Picture was great on either model, but that's usually the case when the
screen is so small. It's like saying my 2" screen on digital camera
is great.
3) Regarding the Tuner operation in this Viore model, based on my hookup to
Cable which carries both digital and analog channels:
First off, both models have a NTSC/ATSC as well as QAM tuner which will
receive your off analog/digital/and cable digital channels. So for that
I gave 2 stars for having the QAM as well.
Second: The Viore is much less user friendly for channel setup than any
other TV I've seen. After scanning my analog/digital cable, it separates
the TV/DTV (analog/digital) channels in 2 menus rather than mix them all
together when changing channels. So before changing channels you need to
use the source menu to choose TV or DTV. Viore told me they do it this
way because they have 2 tuners. (But how does every other brand get
around this?)
My biggest complaint is you cannot skip the DTV channels, as the skip
is only for analog channels (which we don't care about any more). So
if you are flipping through channels and come across one channel which
has 80 sub-channels (like I have), you need to keep flipping 80 times
just to go to the next channel.
The alternative is not so useful either and you need to know the ch# you
want to go to. Ex: If you need to go to ch 105-1, you need to press:
1-0-5-(10+ key for the "dash") and also the ENTER key.
Ex: channel 82-4 is entered as 8-2-(10+ key for the "dash")-ENTER.
Again I called tech support and they agreed there is no way to skip
the DTV channels. They said it was designed to select channels using
the EPG instead. So I tried that, but it only displays the program
time slots for the CURRENT channel. So how do you get to the next channel? You flip through the CH+/- or use the arrows on remote and you're
back to same problem: If a channel has 80 sub-channels, you must keep
flipping thru all of those before you get to the next channel.
Basically it cannot skip the DTV channels nor create a favorites list.
4) Now regarding Off-The-Air (free TV) channel reception:
My comparison includes this TV, the Haier HLT10, an RCA set-top
box (from $40 rebate program) and a Samsung HDTV set-top box. All
these work the same way using VSB (ATSC) tuners.
You may notice many complaints on off-the-air reception. But it's usually
a matter of location and antenna used. In my case living in Dallas area,
all these tuners including the Viore picked up almost all channels listed
for my area, but only with a good antenna. The supplied antenna with this
model is useless as you may have heard.
To keep it short, choose an antenna shaped like this one, or just buy
this one if you need a portable antenna (vs. roof top or attic-mount):
PHILIPS PHDTV1 SILVER SENSOR HDTV ANTENNA (same as the former Zenith
model ZHDTV1). You will still need to reposition it for best reception,
but it outperforms most other indoor types.
