A memory card reader basically connects to your PC's USB port, and you can insert a flash memory card into the reader, just like you used to insert a floppy into a floppy drive. Then the flash memory shows up as an external drive on your Windows Explorer.

(More customer reviews)This is a horrible product that you should avoid at all costs! I have wasted a great deal of time trying to get it to work properly. Its drivers run in the Windows 16bit emulator (they didnt even bother to write 32 bit drivers for it for w2k or XP)
So when it crashes (which is frequent) the 16 bit emulator takes all of the cpu time! Then the stuff wont un-install, so you have to figure out where it is running in the registry and remove it by hand! One of the WORST products that we have ever bought here!

New Portable MP3 CD Player Boombox USB SD MMC Input NR Review

(More customer reviews)This has been one of my most regretted purchases ever. The USB socket died after the first month. The MP3 decoder is incredibly buggy -- the many songs (even whole albums) it wouldn't play turned out to be the ones with album art embedded in the tags, and I suspect that the developer had never heard of VBR, either, because some of the songs are cut off and others continue silently long after they are done. Most songs begin with 2-second previews of music from the upcoming song, except in "random play" mode, where there are random chunks of the preceding song between songs. The "random play" mode, by the way, isn't very random; it mixes up the songs, yes, but in exactly the same order every time, and only for the entire CD -- there's no folder randomization.
All-in-all, this purchase was a huge mistake, and has just about convinced me to get an iPod and a dock, next time.

Panasonic DMP-B100 8.9-Inch Screen Portable Blu-ray Disc Player Review

(More customer reviews)The DMP-B100 is a solid portable Blu-ray player with very good picture quality when playing back Blu-ray Discs and DVDs, however it is missing something so basic that it's almost hard to believe: a video output. Every portable DVD and Blu-ray player we have used or tested in the past - even the super-cheap ones - has included a video output: this allows you to hook your player up to a TV or projector and enjoy movies on a larger screen. Not really essential when you're in a plane, train or automobile, but certainly a nice feature when you reach your destination (e.g., hotel, home or vacation home). When people pay this much for a portable disc player, I think they expect more versatility out of it than use just as a standalone portable player.
The player is also lacking Panasonic's "VIERA Cast" feature for online networking and content streaming (YouTube, Pandora, Netflix, etc.). Again, not that essential in a portable player, but if anyone is considering this as their primary player, then the networking features would have been nice. Panasonic's first generation portable player did include VIERA Cast and an HDMI output, as does their step-up model, the DMP-B500. The B500 even includes built-in WiFi so you can enjoy Netflix streaming, Pandora, YouTube or Amazon Video-on-demand from anywhere you can get a WiFi connection.
The LCD screen itself is not a full resolution 1080p screen (or even 720p), but at this small screen size (just shy of 9 inches diagonal), that resolution would be overkill. For DVD and Blu-ray playback, the picture is bright, colorful and detailed - better than any portable DVD player we've used. Audio quality of the built-in speakers is fair, but to hear every last detail, you'll probably want to use the headphone jack hooked up to a set of powered speakers or headphones.
In terms of loading times, the player is pretty perky. A little slow to load DVDs (28 seconds), but a standard Blu-ray Disc loads in just about 16 seconds and a BD-JAVA Disc (Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl) loads in about 20 seconds. This is actually faster than most home Blu-ray players. Battery life is pretty good too. With an overnight charge, the battery lasted about 183 minutes which is long enough to watch most movies (even most Kevin Costner movies). You'll get a warning about 8-9 minutes before shut down that the battery is running low.
Judged solely on its own merits: audio and video quality, speed of operation, reliability and portability, the DMP-B100 is a fun unit and a solid performer. If you've started building up a collection of Blu-ray Discs, this player will allow you to play them, as well as CDs and DVDs, virtually anywhere. But omitting a video output from the player is a pretty major flaw for those who want to experience the benefits of Blu-ray on a larger screen. We'd recommend spending more to get the B500 instead.

Coby TFDVD7379 7-Inch Portable DVD Player Review

(More customer reviews)If you download movies and want to play AVI and MP4 files from the USB or SD card reader, this is what you want. This is the new model that replaces Coby TF-DVD7377 which is no longer in production, I ordered a 77 from Amazon and got a 79 in the mail and decided to try it out before sending back. Everything you read for the TF-DVD7377 player should apply to this one as well, even though this is the third review for this particular one.
I am giving it a 4 star because I could not find a reliable DVD and AVI-via-USB player of this size except for the Nextbase CLICK10 which is 4 times more expensive, although the best in its kind. This player IS cheaply made, flimsy, and the quality might not be the best, but it does what I wanted which is to play cartoons for my 2.5 year old while I watch my favorite shows. And play them from a USB or SD card and maybe an antic round object called a CD or DVD. I also bought a "Car Headrest Mount for 7 inch Portable DVD Player" (search on eBay like that) so that I can use this player on long trips and it does the job well.
I also connected a 500MB external portable HD via USB cable and was able to play all my downloaded movies and music while running on battery power alone. Although it will eat the battery fast.
While I have not used it to watch my favorite shows, I can tell you that while playing a 700MB AVI of Toy Story or Finding Nemo it does a fantastic job with great quality and definition. No big pixels or distortion of any kind. In fact, it plays them better than my ACER netbook since this screen can be viewed from any angle.
When selecting the input as USB or SD, the folder structure presented is like in windows and easy to navigate. The media needs to be formatted in FAT and not NTFS file systems.
Overall, not a technological marvel, but it does what I got it for and let's hope we don't drop it or it will be a nice paperweight :)

Slipped it into my Canon PowerShot SD800 IS camera, I took a 3 minute avi movie with the camera which was surprisingly satisfactory. The effect was even better than my previous Kodak v570 camera (which was lost) plus a Kingston (or some other well-known brand) 150x or so card. Good resolution and smooth rendering much like what one would expect from a DVD movie. Three minutes of this avi movie took over 300MD of memory and yet the card was able to handle it. I'm glad having taken the risk of buying this steal at $49.99 CAD at Best Buy. Happy!

Philips DCP855 - DVD player with iPod dock - portable - display: 8.5" Review

(More customer reviews)I've owned this product for about 6 months now. This is my third portable DVD player, having two ZEON portable DVD/iPod players. At first, once I hit the setup and saw it was almost exactly the same as the ZEON players, I thought this was just a generic dvd/ipod player various companies are putting their own covers on, and I didn't use it much at first. It is smaller than the Zeon's, and weighs less.
I knew this Philips played DivX movies, which didn't mean much at first, until one day I put in a CD that had an .avi format movie. The screen showed me a directory type menu, where I could select the movie of several that could be on the disk. I selected it, and what-da-know, it started playing.
I tried the same thing on the Zeon and all it would do is say 'invalid disk'.
It has become my favorite DVD player, even at home. It comes with a single audio/video cable w/ standard RCA Yellow Video, Red/White audio plugs, and your video iPod fits neatly into the recessed area that holds the remote (remove the remote to install your iPod). A few functions on the remote actually controls the iPod when installed too, a nice feature!
It has two video outputs, multiple headphone outputs, can play video from a memory card.
The screen pivots up/down, and can rotate around clockwise, and even lay backward flat on the unit too.
This is a very cool unit, I'd buy it again.
In all honesty though, as of now, they're cheaper at a particular, popular discount store than here.

Coby DVD298 1080p Upconversion DVD Player with HDMI and DivX Playback, Black Review

(More customer reviews)Bought this as an alternate DVD player for playing DVDs & MPEG4 media files on USB devices (my primary player for which purposes is a Philips DVP5990).
A decent player overall, and I have no major complaints so far; but I have noticed a few things that could stand improvement, which I'll mention soley for the benefit of anyone who may be contemplating buying one for the same uses I did, and would have liked to have known, before purchasing this unit (over, say, the Philips DVP5990 for another $10 or so, which I can compare it to first-hand).
1) Case construction seems a bit delicate, as if it might be easily damaged in transit (don't know if it really *is* more susceptible to damage, it just feels much less solid than, say, a Philips DVP5990 case does).
2) Remote codes for this unit don't seem to be well-covered by aftermarket universal remotes; none of my remotes had a preset code that covered this unit, and many of its functions couldn't be "learned" by programmable remotes, either. If you prefer consolidating all your remotes into one for daily use, this might be an issue for you (the Philips DVP5990, conversely, is well-represented in most aftermarket remotes' presets, and all it's specialized button funtions are easily "learned").
3) Media file (music, pictures, video) playback, on either disc, USB, or SD Card is generally pretty good (basically, anything that would play on my Philips DVP5990 will also play on this unit), but some minor playback features are not present, such as "stop resume" (if you stop mid program, pressing "play" will begin from begining, not resume where you left off) and continuing play (play stops after each file ends, rather than automatically continuing to the beginning of the next file, meaning you'll be pressing "play" for every item on your media, instead of being able to just watch everything in sequence nonstop), features which you do see on the Philips DVP5990.
4) USB media port power output is too low to support external 2.5" portable drives. This means, if you want to play media on your USB devices, they'll have to be flash drives, or powered (wall-outlet) hard drives. Compare to a Philips DVP5990's USB port, which can power (most of the time) a 2.5" portable hard drive.
Overall, a functional and versatile player at a reasonable price, and I'm fairly satisfied with mine, but a few minor quality/feature niggles prevent it from being a "great" player at this price. For what I use these things for, this player works OK, but if you ever see Philips DVP5990's or comperable players on sale at similar prices to this, my advice is to go for those instead - the difference isn't great, but if you own both as I do, you will end up noticing them.
UPDATE: with a bit more daily use, I have discovered: 1) there *is* a "stop resume" feature, but for some reason, it only operates for media on disc, not on USB/flash, which is an odd omission; and 2) on some DVDs, video occasionally begins stuttering (while audio continues to play smoothly) - scanning backwards briefly restores normal play so it's not a huge problem, but it is annoying, as it can break your attention to what you're watching. Still a useful player, but with odd little quality gaps.
