(More customer reviews)It seems like everyone and his brother is getting this to use with an Acer Aspire One.
Well, it works fine with mine.
When I installed the CentOS/Linux operating system, the installation software didn't automatically recognize the drive, and I had to pick from a list of CentOS's drivers. That was no problem, however.
If you're going to use the unit to install a new operating system, or otherwise boot to the unit, you'll appreciate the outside power supply, since the USB ports on the Aspire One aren't powered until a few seconds into boot-up. By then the bios would have decided that no DVD was connected, and would be booting from the hard drive.
I found that out the hard way with a USB-powered unit made by LG, which is why I went for the Sony instead. That and several other problems with the LG.
Best for the Aspire One would be a USB-powered unit with an optional external power supply.
This is a first-rate drive, at a reasonable price.

LG USB 20X DVD/48X CD External Reader/Rewriter Review

(More customer reviews)Easiest installation option, plug in and go. I bought this because my five year old internal 16X DVD/CD player/burner quit reading DVDs. I'm not sure if you get better performance from an internal disk drive, or if there are operation issues with a USB connected devices. I havn't noticed any with this drive. The price is right when comparing with other external (or internal) drives of the same caliber. I havn't tried the lightscribe option yet because you need special discs, but as an artist, it looks like a cool way to get a professional looking label rather than using a sharpie. FYI, you have to download the Lightscribe software from their website, all other nessesary/optional software is included with the driver.

Sony DRX-830U 18X External USB 2.0 Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this DRX-830U from best buy for $99.99. It is quite easy to install the hardware and software. I start to use this unit in 10 minutes after I open the box.
DRX-830U comes with Nero 7. It comes with a complete software package. Maybe it is "too" complete; it has a huge software package that consumes too much CPU time. I am using 2.4G Pentium CPU + 512Mbyte memory. During DVD editing process with DV signal, computer lagging badly! It is about 1.5 frames/second. But I can hear movie sound continuously. However, after DVD burning process, the result just likes a good regular DVD. I highly recommend that you use other software to edit your DVD movie. You can find them on-line for pretty good price.
When I use DRX-830U to burn DVD (Verbatim 16X DVD-R), with full DRX-830U burning speed (x18), I fail 3 out of 22 burns with over disk recommend burning speed limit. DRX-830 was not setup properly! If I burn it at 8X, so far there is no problem! It takes less then 10 minutes to complete each DVD burning (>1 hours movie).
Someone has mention about its noise during burning process. Well, it does make some noise, but its noise level similar to a CPU fan, and most of time it is very quire! I use computer more then 6 hours a day, and I burn DVD occasionally. Its noise problem seems does not bother me at all!
It is external model, so it can work for my desktop and laptop computer where I need it. Also, its front panel design looks good! But, its indicator is not very clear to me, such as there is no power indicator! Anyway, it is good enough for my application.
Due to panel design, and software issue, I give this product 4 star! I just purchase it one week ago, and I am going to keep it!
It is a good product, and I will recommend my friend to buy it!

(More customer reviews)I purchased this as my Macbook did not have the capability to burn DVDs. This drive not only burns DVDs but dual layer discs to boot, and the Lightscribe is fantastic for making professional looking discs. The software that comes with the unit is not Mac compatible and I have not yet installed it on my Windows XP machine, so I can't speak to the quality of it. But the drive itself is great. I simply plugged it into my Mac and iMovie, iTunes, etc automatically recognized it and it's capabilities. For the Lightscribe to work you'll need an application, and LaCie offers a free one on their website. They even have a free Linux version too, unbelievable.
EDIT: The unit just died. 18 months is pretty pitiful if you ask me. Anyway, up until that moment I was satisfied but now it's a paper weight.

(More customer reviews)Installation was very easy, took less than 5 minutes to install in the computer. The software, Nero8, also installed quickly. I have not had a single failed DVD or CD burn yet with this drive; this is very impressive to me (I am using Verbatim media). The drive is quieter than most I have used.
If you want to use the LightScribe feature (and it does work very well), it will be necessary to download drivers from the LightScribe web site [...] in order for Nero 8 to recognize this feature.

(More customer reviews)I have had this drive for a little over a month now. I have burned over 40 DVD's and 20 CD's. I have only had a couple projects that failed. Both on lower quality Memorex discs. Never while using Verbatum discs. It is faster than my internal Super Drive on my 1 year old Gateway laptop. The internal drive had tons of trouble with DL DVD's and regular problems with any other type of media, were the LG just seems to burn through them with no trouble. (As long as quality media is used). DVD's burned on my internal drive would not allways play on my DVD player, or would pixalize regularly from poor burning. With the LG I have not had any trouble with that at all. I am VERY happy with the quality of this drive. For the price, you can't beat it. It also does a good job on Lightscrbe discs. Very good contrast compared to my internal drive. As a side note, I did not use the supplied software. I use Roxio Creator 2009 for burning, and Sure Thing for labeling. I find supplied software lacking in all cases, and would rather spend a few bucks on software I like.

(More customer reviews)I've only had this burner a few weeks but already I've burned dozens of DVDs with nary a coaster in the bunch.As the previous reviewer noted, it's very simple to use and doesn't require any elaborate set-up. Just plug it into a USB port and it's ready to produce flawless DVDs quickly and efficiently.
The drive comes with Nero 7 Essentials which includes Nero Burning ROM 7 and Nero Vision 4. I already have the full Nero suite so I didn't install it, but I'm sure it would come in handy for someone who didn't have any burning software or who wanted to sample Nero for the first time.

Sony DRX-840U 20x External Dual-Layer DVD Burner Review

(More customer reviews)I have had an external burner for quite some time. With recent changes to my environment, I no longer had a Firewire port so I decided to switch to a USB 2.0 external burner. I had gone to Fry's, purchased another well known brand that was an 18x burner, brought it home, set it up, Windows XP Pro did its thing and all seemed right with the world. That was until I actually tried to use it. No matter what I did, Nero V7 and V8 saw it but refused to use either DVD+R or DVD-R media. I did the normal searching for solutions but none presented itself. After months of trying to get it to work, I finally gave up and decided to try another vendor.
In my searching on Amazon, I ran across this Sony drive and noticed it was one of the first to offer 20x burn speeds. The 20x burn speed, while certainly nice, was not what attracted me to this. Rather, it was the fact that, at 20x, this meant it was a relatively new design which meant it should work better. In my searching to resolve my previous external drive's problems, the Sony drives were always lauded by those that had used them. A combination of those two things gave me at least some confidence that this was a good drive.
When it arrived, I did the normal thing and Windows was happy with it. So the acid test: what would Nero think about it? As it turns out, Nero V8 was quite happy with it and worked flawlessly with the drive. I have burned DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-R DL and CD audio all at the rated speed, all without any problems, all with perfect burns.
Pros:
- It just works without any problems
- Nice case design
- It is happy both vertically and horizontally
Cons:
- Somewhat noisy when the CD/DVD is burning at full speed
- Slower burn speed on inside tracks but speeds up as it moves out
Bottom line: if I had to do it all over again, I would. The drive got me what I was looking for: something that works reliably and dependably. It certainly gets my recommendation.
