For everyone who cannot find the proper serial number, I feel your pain. I just spent a short amount of time looking for the solution and finally decided to check the disk. In VERY SMALL FONT on the right side of the disk you will see a WINDVD Serial Number, about 16-20 characters long. I have to say however that Toshiba did a bang up job putting the S/N on the disk which must be in the drive when you are trying to install it. Just remember to push the disk back in after you enter the number and before you hit >Next.
Hope this helps everyone involved. Please try and pass the word to any other sites you've posted your question to.

Runs on USB power and works fine with Ubuntu, good quality quick burner. The drive comes with two cables, one for USB and one for additional power. I have not had to use the second cable yet and in research have found that it is only needed if your USB ports are "underpowered."
Well worth the cost in my opinion.

(More customer reviews)I bought this external optical drive for my new Asus 1000h based on the well written and convincing reviews here, and even though the Targus at twice the price is always promoted along with the Asus and Acer netbooks. (My Asus rocks by the way) Just like the other reviews say, I plugged in the power cord (runs off of 1 usb) and the data cord (another of the 3 Asus usb's) and the Asus recognized it immediately and I began downloading software cd's for my new Canon dslr. Then I watched a movie dvd. That was it. Didn't need the driver cd. Also comes with a LG DVD Writer Solution DVD if you need/want it. I'm pretty picky, and this unit exceeded my expectations. It's perfect. And thanks to the previous reviewers, you were spot on and saved me almost $100.

(More customer reviews)This little enclosure is great. I had a 2005 vinatage laptop that died and I pulled the DVD optical drive from it before I recycled it. This enclosure came with the screws and a new tray face plate that perfectly replaced my old face plate. Once I could see the new face plate, it was not to hard to figure out what tabs to push so the old one snapped off and the new one snapped on. This enclosure is for the older IDE slim optical drives, not the newer Sata drives.

I tried this External Drive with my ASUS eee 1005HA and it was not reconzied, then tried it with my laptop Toshiba and it didn't work there either. Check the ports configurations and download drivers, but nothing work for this external drive to be reconzied by any computer, even tried with the work computer and nothing. I have to return and get a refund. Don't recommended.

It requires 2 free USB ports (look at the picture on Amazon). On my MacBook Pro the USB ports are on opposite sites of the computer, and the cable JUST reaches if I stretch the cable across the top of my keyboard (doesn't obstruct any keys). Kind of annoying, but I only use the burner occasionally.

(More customer reviews)The drive worked right out of the box for me when I plugged it into my laptop with Windows 7. The drive was recognized and up and running in less than 5 minutes.
The drive has a metal casing so it feels very solid. Definitely does not feel cheap. It comes with all the cables you will need.
The drive can be a little noisy when it is running, but that is just nit picking. Definitely would recommend it if you need a drive for a netbook, or just an extra drive to burn disks.

I have not had a single failed DVD or CD burn yet with this drive; this is very impressive to me (I am using Verbatim media). The drive is quieter than most I have used.
If you want to use the LightScribe feature (and it does work very well), it will be necessary to download drivers from the LightScribe web site [...] in order for Nero 8 to recognize this feature.

I was happy to see that the negative issues listed in that review had not only been addressed, but resolved. The "yellow" port seen on the picture was not actually on the player as stated in the review, but the new instructions show exactly where to plug everything. The LG external came with an installation cd, as well as being a "plug and play" item. The directions were well written, and easy to follow. I was able to view dvds within minutes of opening the package, and my crappy old computer had no issues with this hardware whatsoever. I'm on windows xp, which seems to take issues with everything, LOL, but not this item. While you can just "plug and play", after installing the programs on the cd you are given several desktop shortcuts to access exactly what you are trying to do (i.e. burn a cd, burn a dvd), and the directions are step by step from there.
This item is well worth the money, and its quality would be worth even more. I highly recommend this external!
