(More customer reviews)My only complaint is that the GH22NP20 did not come with installation instructions. My computer has two optical drives and when I first installed the LG, neither of the new pair of drives worked. I called LG customer support at 1-800-243-0000 and a customer service rep told me that one of the two drives needed to be the slave. This was done by moving a jumper on the back of one drive to the terminals marked "slave." That fixed the problem. There was no software installation needed. As "Stilettos" wrote, the drive is quiet.
Esaitech Inc. shipped the drive promptly and it came to my front door exactly on the expected arrival date. It was double-boxed, both boxes were stuffed with bubble wrap, and the drive was sealed in its plastic bag.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the LG Electronics GP08LU10 8X Slim LightScribe DVD+/-RW External Drive to provide my MSI Wind U123 network with access to installation and recovery DVDs and CDs. (The Wind does not have an internal optical drive.)
The drive was recognized by the Wind and Windows XP Home without the need to install any drivers. It has a nice black polished look that matches the Wind's design fairly closely. (This is obviously not intentional, but it is a pleasant coincidence.)
The drive is reasonably fast, comes with USB cables and works well. My only criticism is that a carry case (especially at this price) would have been appreciated. But, admittedly, this is a nit.
All-all-all this is a nicely engineered drive that is well worth the money.

(More customer reviews)Easiest installation option, plug in and go. I bought this because my five year old internal 16X DVD/CD player/burner quit reading DVDs. I'm not sure if you get better performance from an internal disk drive, or if there are operation issues with a USB connected devices. I havn't noticed any with this drive. The price is right when comparing with other external (or internal) drives of the same caliber. I havn't tried the lightscribe option yet because you need special discs, but as an artist, it looks like a cool way to get a professional looking label rather than using a sharpie. FYI, you have to download the Lightscribe software from their website, all other nessesary/optional software is included with the driver.

LiteOn 8X DVDRW Slim USB White Review

(More customer reviews)For me, having an external DVD/CD drive for my Samsung NC10 Netbook was an essential component; and I am essentially pleased with The Lite-On eSAU208 External Slim DVD Writer. It is very lightweight, easy to install, attractive and performs many important functions. However, one function that was important to me that the Nero Essentials software (included with the Lite-On DVD player) did not satisfy is the ability to play DVD movies. The reason for this is that the software did not include a DVD Decoder. When I emailed Lite-On's and Nero's Customer Service departments on two occasions to inquire about this issue they did not reply to me. Thus, I would give Lite-On's and Nero's customer service responsiveness only a 1-star rating. Thankfully, this issue was solved for me by an Amazon customer who replied to my posting on an Amazon discussion board. The solution was to download the free VLC player, which includes (among other things) the DVD decoder I need.
FOLLOW-UP TO EARLIER REVIEW (2/25/09)-- Nero's Customer Service finally responded to say the Nero Essentials software provided with the Lite-On product does not include the decoders/encoders needed to play DVD movies, and that I would have to purchase their Nero 9 sotware in order to do so. Not surprisingly, they forgot to mention that the needed decoders could be obtained free of charge by downloading the VLC player mentioned above.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this as my Macbook did not have the capability to burn DVDs. This drive not only burns DVDs but dual layer discs to boot, and the Lightscribe is fantastic for making professional looking discs. The software that comes with the unit is not Mac compatible and I have not yet installed it on my Windows XP machine, so I can't speak to the quality of it. But the drive itself is great. I simply plugged it into my Mac and iMovie, iTunes, etc automatically recognized it and it's capabilities. For the Lightscribe to work you'll need an application, and LaCie offers a free one on their website. They even have a free Linux version too, unbelievable.
EDIT: The unit just died. 18 months is pretty pitiful if you ask me. Anyway, up until that moment I was satisfied but now it's a paper weight.

I have not had a single failed DVD or CD burn yet with this drive; this is very impressive to me (I am using Verbatim media). The drive is quieter than most I have used.
If you want to use the LightScribe feature (and it does work very well), it will be necessary to download drivers from the LightScribe web site [...] in order for Nero 8 to recognize this feature.

(More customer reviews)This is a great drive. It's light and small enough to carry with me daily. I have burnt several disks and have yet to create a coaster. The lightscribe feature is wonderful and the quality of the labels it creates is incredibly high. The included software works well.
The only complaints that I have are that the included usb cable is painfully short. The two usb heads are so close together that I cannot plug them both in. Fortunately my laptop only needs single usb port to power the drive, so I replaced the cable with a standard mini-usb cable I had lying around. The drive also eats battery life on my laptop, but that is to be expected.

(More customer reviews)I bought this drive specifically for use with one of my Windows-based pcs. It works great with that, which I expected, and the windows software that comes with the drive is also wonderful and most welcome.
I did not, however, expect that it would work with my Macbook 1.83 gHz Core2 Duo. My internal optical drive is dying, and while it's pretty easy to use a network drive for installs and stuff, it's definitely not as convenient to go back and forth to the other desk. The documentation and all but one of the reviews were pretty clear that this was not a Mac-friendly product, so I was pleasantly surprised when the Mighty MacBook jumped right on playing the music cd in the drive.
I was even MORE surprised when it burned a DVD under the native/finder/disk burning application (no third party software involved at all).
And I was elated to learn that LightScribe had free downloads for the Mac, but I didn't really expect them to work in Snow Leopard.
But they do. AND it plays movies in the DVD player software. I don't know for certain whether my version of dvd player is the one that shipped with my macbook, or whether it's something that was bundled with my snow leopard disk, but movies open right up - impressively fast, as a matter of fact.

It does not require an external AC Adapter (if so inclined you will need a 5v one). The software suite that comes with the drive is excellent (Cyberlink Power DVD, Nero Express and SecurDisc to name a few). And did I mention that the drive also has LightScribe!!! I have used this drive with just the included USB cable but it also come with a USB to 5V DC cable if your USB port does not provide enough power. The only issue I had was the confusing interface when loading the software - it took a little trial and error to get the software installed on my Acer One. Once done, this drive works like a charm!!! If you have a Netbook - this is a MUST GET accessory.

(More customer reviews)I have had this drive for a little over a month now. I have burned over 40 DVD's and 20 CD's. I have only had a couple projects that failed. Both on lower quality Memorex discs. Never while using Verbatum discs. It is faster than my internal Super Drive on my 1 year old Gateway laptop. The internal drive had tons of trouble with DL DVD's and regular problems with any other type of media, were the LG just seems to burn through them with no trouble. (As long as quality media is used). DVD's burned on my internal drive would not allways play on my DVD player, or would pixalize regularly from poor burning. With the LG I have not had any trouble with that at all. I am VERY happy with the quality of this drive. For the price, you can't beat it. It also does a good job on Lightscrbe discs. Very good contrast compared to my internal drive. As a side note, I did not use the supplied software. I use Roxio Creator 2009 for burning, and Sure Thing for labeling. I find supplied software lacking in all cases, and would rather spend a few bucks on software I like.

(More customer reviews)Unlike the description, this is not, in fact, a Lightscribe drive. So far I have not been successful in using it as a DVD burner either, but I haven't exhausted all options yet. The most apt description would be that this is a cheap hunk of crap. You should also be aware that it is bare bones, in other words, it doesn't include any types of software other than a USB 2.0 driver. Make sure you have your own burning software if you get this.
