Google Keywords: windvd provided missing serial number new install toshiba slim USB SuperMulti DVD+R(w)
For everyone who cannot find the proper serial number, I feel your pain. I just spent a short amount of time looking for the solution and finally decided to check the disk. In VERY SMALL FONT on the right side of the disk you will see a WINDVD Serial Number, about 16-20 characters long. I have to say however that Toshiba did a bang up job putting the S/N on the disk which must be in the drive when you are trying to install it. Just remember to push the disk back in after you enter the number and before you hit >Next.
Hope this helps everyone involved. Please try and pass the word to any other sites you've posted your question to.

I just ordered this last week and I love it, very snappy, plays DVD's burns CD's, you can boot an ISO from it in the BIOS no problem. Powered by the USB which is more awesome!
This drive saved me a request for servicing my Aspire One, I just plugged it in, inserted the disk, booted my copy of Windows XP, fixed the Master Boot Record and I was back to normal.
Great product, great seller.
Make sure you DON'T PAY $79.99 for this. The other sellers have it for just $29.99 and it's worth every penny, these sellers are just as good as buying from Amazon directly, shipping wasn't bad either.

NU Slim USB External SuperMulti Drive DVD Burner (ESW846B) Review

I bought this to replace the failing internal drive on my daughter's MacBook. After extensive research, we could find no documentation whether this drive was Mac compatible or not. The manufacturer does not list the Mac in their compatibility list, and there were no drivers available for it anywhere. We took a chance and, as it turns out, it is fully compatible without the need for any driver. Just plug and play with the Mac.

It goes without saying that netbook such as acer aspire one and ASUS Eee PC are very popular these days. This trend has changed the notebook product roadmap in the coming year. Now net-top or mini-desktop have just been launched by ASUS and some other brands. This nettop such as Eee BOX is compact sized and trendy looking without built in DVD burners. It will be future mainstream for desktop as well.In such a scenario, it stands to reason that nettop users might need to have extra external slim DVD burners like NU ESW846 for CD/DVD playing and burning use. This ESW846 External USB2.0 SuperSlim SuperMulti drive combines all the functions of a DVD player, DVD recorder, CD player and CD recorder into one lightweight, portable design that fits in your notebook! LiteOn 8X DVDRW Slim USB White Review

LiteOn 8X DVDRW Slim USB White
Average Reviews:

For me, having an external DVD/CD drive for my Samsung NC10 Netbook was an essential component; and I am essentially pleased with The Lite-On eSAU208 External Slim DVD Writer. It is very lightweight, easy to install, attractive and performs many important functions. However, one function that was important to me that the Nero Essentials software (included with the Lite-On DVD player) did not satisfy is the ability to play DVD movies. The reason for this is that the software did not include a DVD Decoder. When I emailed Lite-On's and Nero's Customer Service departments on two occasions to inquire about this issue they did not reply to me. Thus, I would give Lite-On's and Nero's customer service responsiveness only a 1-star rating. Thankfully, this issue was solved for me by an Amazon customer who replied to my posting on an Amazon discussion board. The solution was to download the free VLC player, which includes (among other things) the DVD decoder I need.
FOLLOW-UP TO EARLIER REVIEW (2/25/09)-- Nero's Customer Service finally responded to say the Nero Essentials software provided with the Lite-On product does not include the decoders/encoders needed to play DVD movies, and that I would have to purchase their Nero 9 sotware in order to do so. Not surprisingly, they forgot to mention that the needed decoders could be obtained free of charge by downloading the VLC player mentioned above.

This is an excellent accessory package for anyone on the go and needs these types of items. The DVD drive is very easy to set up and the compact size is a major plus. It gets its power from the netbook so there is no additional cable to haul around. I used it to create backup DVD's because no software disks were furnished with the netbook.
The sleeve fits my 10" netbook perfectly and provides protection against moderate bumps and jolts.
The mouse works fine but it is very small. If your usage is minimal then this mouse may be all you need. However, if you have large hands and/or have extensive usage you may want to obtain a larger mouse such as the Microsoft wireless mouse w/receiver, for example.

I just bought this and it seems to work just fine. Nothing fancy.
It requires 2 free USB ports (look at the picture on Amazon). On my MacBook Pro the USB ports are on opposite sites of the computer, and the cable JUST reaches if I stretch the cable across the top of my keyboard (doesn't obstruct any keys). Kind of annoying, but I only use the burner occasionally.

NU Slim USB External SuperMulti Drive DVD Burner ESW860 Review

NU Slim USB External SuperMulti Drive DVD Burner ESW860

First of all - a great advantage - no extra AC power needed - that is exactly what we understand as a super slim portable drive. An AC power supply is even not included in the box and it comes just with Y-USB cable. I have IBM X61s laptop, equipped with 3 x USB 2.0 and the NU drive works perfectly on it. They say it is compatible both to USB 1.1 and 2.0, I guess that is why they provided Y-USB cable - for more power on older machines. The NU is cheaper than similar drives provided by TARGUS. About the software compatibility - I can say it is plug and play, no problems. I burned few CDs and DVDs, everything was just fine. They were readable on other machines. It comes with NERO 8.0 - some OEM version, but works great. The finish of this product is pretty good and the design is sleek. I think that is enough - I love it.

I bought this to use with a ThinkPad x61s. It works fine in Windows, however using it as a boot device is problematic. At times the laptop doesn't recognize that it is attached. A workaround is to try rebooting over again, entering the bios, exiting the bios, rebooting, and hitting F10. You may have to repeat this process, but eventually it will show up as a bootable device.
Also, the AC adapter plug doesn't quite fit the AC jack, seems like it is the wrong length, but it does work.

Liteon ETAU208-96 Top Load DVD/CD Writer Black Review

Liteon ETAU208-96 Top Load DVD/CD Writer Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this drive to compliment a recently purchased Acer netbook. I wanted something small, bus powered, inexpensive, and the ability to burn a dual-layer DVD. This unit fit the bill so I pulled the trigger.
A note for Mac users: Yes, this drive works on a Mac. I connected it to a Mac mini running OS X 10.6.3 and it was immediately recognized by the system, reading and writing all manner of CDs and DVDs. So if you want a second optical drive on your Mac, or if you've got a MacBook Air and want something cheaper than Apple's $99 external drive, this is a viable option.
The box contains the drive itself (about the same size as two CD cases stacked on top of one another), a small (maybe 8") USB cable, a "Nero 8 Essentials" CD (containing Windows and Linux software), and a thin instruction manual (which I never opened). Once unpacked, installation takes literally seconds. Upon connecting it to my netbook the drive was immediately recognized by Windows XP Home and appeared under My Computer as a "DVD-RAM Drive". I tested it with several CDs and DVDs, both commercial and homemade, and had no problems.
Although it included the Nero software, I opted instead for VLC Media Player (for DVD playback) and CDBurnerXP (for disc burning). Both are free downloads (Google 'em for URLs), perform flawlessly with this drive, and work with pretty much all versions of Windows. (VLC also has a Linux port.)
The drive is a top-loader (like a portable audio CD player). I originally saw that as a drawback but after thinking about it I realize that it's a good idea. A top-loading drive allows you to play (and burn) physically smaller media that can't work in a slot-loader. Also, people who use netbooks typically use them in somewhat cramped quarters (airline seats, etc) and a slot-loading drive actually takes up more space than a top-loading drive since you need that much space in front of the drive to load/unload discs. Also, there would be less battery drain on a top-loading unit since there's no motor system to inject/eject the media to/from the drive. This would also make the top-loading drive mechanically simpler, another boon.
One particularly nice touch: There is a slot on the underside of the unit which perfectly fits the USB cable when not in use, thus saving you some aggravation when storing the drive. No need to clumsily wrap the cable around the drive or look for it in your bag. Some people will lament the short USB cable; I don't. A longer USB cable just adds bulk and weight and more difficult storage, and since the drive is meant to be used right next to your laptop anyway I fail to see how the short-ish cord can be a problem.
The drive is about as loud as your average laptop drive, which is to say it's pretty quiet. Read/write speeds are perfectly acceptable. I cannot comment on battery drain but I don't expect any profound revelations on that front. It's an electromechanical drive so of COURSE it will suck some battery life out of your laptop whenever you use it.
Ejecting a disc from Windows works the same way as any other drive, the only difference being after you eject the CD in the operating system, a green LED on the top of the drive (next to the word STOP) flashes repeatedly. At that point you can open the drive and remove the disc, and Windows goes back to showing the drive as being a "DVD-RAM Drive". The eject mechanism is handled by a spring-loaded plastic switch at the front of the unit. Slide it sideways and the top pops open about 1/2".
I only have one complaint and I don't know that it's enough to warrant the removal of a full star. The drive feels incredibly flimsy, particularly the upper half, and the spring-loaded eject switch feels like it's pushing more spring than the switch can handle. I can easily depress the center of the top of the drive with a minimum of effort. I wouldn't have minded seeing a little more internal support "under the hood" as it were, even if it meant bulking up the unit a bit. Still, this is not intended to be a heavy-duty drive so I'm not sure if that even qualifies as a design flaw. Therefore I won't penalize it.
One could also argue that the high-glass plastics collect fingerprints like nobody's business, but that never bothered me so I'm not taking points for that either.
So, to recap: Small, lightweight, cheap, works with Mac and Windows and Linux, clever cable storage, burns dual layer DVDs, works with mini CDs/DVDs, fully compatible with every program I threw its way, visual indicator when it's safe to open the lid. Potential deal breakers for some: Fingerprint-friendly plastics, arguably flimsy enclosure construction.
EDIT Sept 20 2010: Last Thursday the drive took a header out of my bag, landed corner-first on a raised computer room floor, was subsequently accidentally kicked (by me) about ten feet where it banged up against the wall. The CD door flew open and the CD that was inside of it (though not spinning) flew out. I had assumed the worst but didn't have to. The drive is perfectly operational and doesn't even have a scratch on it from its abusive ordeal.

This works perfectly with my old laptop DVD-RW drive. It seriously takes 3 minutes to open the box and insert your drive into the enclosure. The enclosure comes with 2 screws to fasten your drive in the back as well. Comes with two USB cables for power and data transmit. I have already burned DVD's/CD's with no problems at all. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate RC1, no need to install drivers, the OS recognized the DVD drive automatically when plugged in via USB. You can read CD/DVDs with only one USB plugged in as well. To be safe I plugged in both USBs when I burned a DVD.
5 Stars! Highly recommend using this approach if you have a laptop dvd drive lying around. A whole external DVD drive can be pricey, and this solution is super cheap.

Portable design, using USB 2.0 connection to ensure the best performance Plug & Play with emergency manual eject. This external enclosure is using USB 2.0 and is backward compatible with USB 1.1. Most Pentium II, Pentium III and early Pentium IV laptops and computers have USB 1.1. It can be powered by USB 2.0. Some USB 1.1 ports do not have power and you have to use the keyboard connector to draw power(cable is provided). In most cases you can use both cables to draw enough power to run this drive properly especially when using it to write cdroms or dvdroms. Supported Drivers: DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW, DVD-ROM, CD-R/RW, CD-ROM, it is a good idea to use your laptop slim drive for a Portable rom.

Pioneer DVR-XD09 External Slim Portable USB 2.0 DVD/CD Writer Review

Pioneer DVR-XD09 External Slim Portable USB 2.0 DVD/CD Writer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this drive last week from Best Buy's for $70.
It's cheaper here, but the Best Buy one was made on Dec. 2009, not June 2009.
I only used it for 2 days, so here it is:
**Portability: 10/10
It's as light as a thin paperback book!
Go find one & hold it. Can you get any lighter than this with $60?
**Ease of Use: 9/10
You could use it with Windows XP, Vista, or 7.
If you have Windows 7 like me, you have to wait about 10 minutes while it installs drivers and such.
After that, it's "plug-n-play".
**Additional Software: 7/10
The Nero 8 Essentials seems fast and took 15 min to download while the "Nero securediskviewer" took about 12 min.
I'm sure you could do without the Nero, but I wanted to try it out. (I still haven't, but I'll update this in a few months.) I still thought that the Nero took a little longer than I would've liked to download.
A small warning: The Nero 8 does take more space than I would've liked. (I like to keep my D drive as empty as possible.)
**Sounds & Heat: 8/10
There is NO heat.
However, it makes this annoying humming and high "whoooo" sound when it's working hard.
**Design: 10/10
Unlike most usb external optical drives, this one opens up!
You get to see what you're working with and adjust the cd/dvd accordingly.
The "Open" button doesn't work when there's isn't any power, so turn it over and find the little button on the lower back of the drive, press it the opposite way, and and the drive cover should kinda click up.
I like it this way because it's safer when a cd/dvd jams up & freezes -- you could just yank out the 2 usb cables from the computer/laptop, WAIT until you hear the disk stop spinning, and take it out (using the way I just described).
Plus, it is NOT a fingerprint magnet. You can see oily fingerprints if you tip it at a certain angle, but other than that, the somewhat metallic gray finish hides everything.
All in all, I give this drive a 9/10.
It's thin, well designed & built, portable, and is at a decent price.
(I highly recommend it for beginning to intermediate computer users.)
Buy it! You won't regret it!
(at least most of you won't)
