(More customer reviews)this external dvd burner is by far the easiest to use, and the cheapest! but dont get me wrong on saying its cheap, because this a really good deal. I had no trouble at all installing it and using it. the title is a little misleading on saying it is for the asus EEE pc, but it can be used with anything that has 2 usb ports. the fact that it burns both dvd and dual layer dvds is amazing, considering other drives sell for $100+. in my opinion, the way the drive ejects (like a laptop drive) is a little annoying, but thats just me. when I got it, i was shocked on how small it actually is, about 5X5 inches and about an inch tall.

(More customer reviews)I eagerly awaited receiving this product. It deemed to solve two big problems Netbooks face. Overheating and a lack of a disc drive. I WAS excited.
[Bear in mind, I haven't even gotten to turn it on yet.]
First off, the plastic is VERY lightweight. I would never even think about dropping it as it would probably shatter in a million different pieces and shrapnel would tear out my eye, but oh well. I'll just try hard not to drop it.
Secondly, the DC cord is like 3 feet long. Yup, it barely reaches the ground when placed on my desk, but would never make it to the outlet when sat on my lap. This is when the Netbook NEEDS a fan. This was an extreme disappointment.
Finally, I removed the "removable" hard drive to look at it. Sure, it's removable. However, getting it back in, that's another story. I've pushed and prodded, but it won't go in. [Insert that's what she said joke here] I finally got so frustrated that I tried to remove the screws on the bottom to try to get the connector to fit. That didn't work, as I think there was another screw under the label on the bottom. I will need that when I plan on returning it.
Good idea, pretty bad execution.

(My Asus rocks by the way) Just like the other reviews say, I plugged in the power cord (runs off of 1 usb) and the data cord (another of the 3 Asus usb's) and the Asus recognized it immediately and I began downloading software cd's for my new Canon dslr. Then I watched a movie dvd. That was it. Didn't need the driver cd. Also comes with a LG DVD Writer Solution DVD if you need/want it. I'm pretty picky, and this unit exceeded my expectations. It's perfect. And thanks to the previous reviewers, you were spot on and saved me almost $100.

(More customer reviews)This is great for the money. I would actually give it 4 1/2 stars. The 1/2 star deducted, because the tray door popped off when I took it out of the package. However, I was able to pop it back into place. It seems like it sticks a little bit when I push the tray back in, but other than that it reads CD's perfectly and it's only a very minor imperfection.
I was very close to returning this CD-ROM, because my netbook wouldn't recognize it in any of the USB ports. If this happens to you, just have the CD-ROM plugged into your netbook before you turn the netbook on. After I did that it recognized the drive and played all CD's with no problem.
If you're buying this to install and OS or any kind of MS software onto your netbook, be advised that most of their software is on a DVD-ROM disc.

I tried this External Drive with my ASUS eee 1005HA and it was not reconzied, then tried it with my laptop Toshiba and it didn't work there either. Check the ports configurations and download drivers, but nothing work for this external drive to be reconzied by any computer, even tried with the work computer and nothing. I have to return and get a refund. Don't recommended.

The drive has a metal casing so it feels very solid. Definitely does not feel cheap. It comes with all the cables you will need.
The drive can be a little noisy when it is running, but that is just nit picking. Definitely would recommend it if you need a drive for a netbook, or just an extra drive to burn disks.

(More customer reviews)This works perfectly with my old laptop DVD-RW drive. It seriously takes 3 minutes to open the box and insert your drive into the enclosure. The enclosure comes with 2 screws to fasten your drive in the back as well. Comes with two USB cables for power and data transmit. I have already burned DVD's/CD's with no problems at all. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate RC1, no need to install drivers, the OS recognized the DVD drive automatically when plugged in via USB. You can read CD/DVDs with only one USB plugged in as well. To be safe I plugged in both USBs when I burned a DVD.
5 Stars! Highly recommend using this approach if you have a laptop dvd drive lying around. A whole external DVD drive can be pricey, and this solution is super cheap.

(More customer reviews)I removed my optical drive in my Mid 2010 MBP for a second HD,
but I still wanted to use my optical drive when needed
so I looked for an enclosure to work with.
I searched long and hard for a good optical drive
but cheap.
I finally decided on this
and to my surprise,
it works perfectly.
The enclosure may be a "little" bigger than the MBP internal optical drive
but there's solution to work around it.
What I did was stuff anti-static covers to stabilize the optical drive.
To me,
it works
as it helps stabilize the drive,
provide anti-static protection against the drive
and it also looks "cool"
(The item comes with two usb cords,
one to connect the dvd drive
and the other to power the drive.
What I've found out is that the connecting usb drive alone
is enough power to power the entire dvd drive.
No need for the second "power" usb.)
All in all,
its a steal.
I'm one happy customer.

Really slim and tight. Sweet.
I got this for my Samsung Q1 Ultra. Awesome.
So this drive can be bus powered or take power from the included AC adapter. For those like me who are a less technically inclined "bus-powered" means that the drive will be powered through the USB cable when you plug it into the computer. That's good if you want to use it with your portable devices because then you will be free from having to deal with another cord (a power cord). The downside to that, of course, is that it will draw power and make your battery life much shorter if your computer unit is running only on batteries.
But you want bus powered! More convenient. This guy will do that. But can also can be plugged into the wall.
UPDATE 2/8/09-- Replaced it- it never would write to dvd or cd, I just never noticed it because it used it only for reading dvds or cds, never writing. TOTAL CRAP!!

I was happy to see that the negative issues listed in that review had not only been addressed, but resolved. The "yellow" port seen on the picture was not actually on the player as stated in the review, but the new instructions show exactly where to plug everything. The LG external came with an installation cd, as well as being a "plug and play" item. The directions were well written, and easy to follow. I was able to view dvds within minutes of opening the package, and my crappy old computer had no issues with this hardware whatsoever. I'm on windows xp, which seems to take issues with everything, LOL, but not this item. While you can just "plug and play", after installing the programs on the cd you are given several desktop shortcuts to access exactly what you are trying to do (i.e. burn a cd, burn a dvd), and the directions are step by step from there.
This item is well worth the money, and its quality would be worth even more. I highly recommend this external!
