(More customer reviews)This is great for the money. I would actually give it 4 1/2 stars. The 1/2 star deducted, because the tray door popped off when I took it out of the package. However, I was able to pop it back into place. It seems like it sticks a little bit when I push the tray back in, but other than that it reads CD's perfectly and it's only a very minor imperfection.
I was very close to returning this CD-ROM, because my netbook wouldn't recognize it in any of the USB ports. If this happens to you, just have the CD-ROM plugged into your netbook before you turn the netbook on. After I did that it recognized the drive and played all CD's with no problem.
If you're buying this to install and OS or any kind of MS software onto your netbook, be advised that most of their software is on a DVD-ROM disc.

(More customer reviews)This works perfectly with my old laptop DVD-RW drive. It seriously takes 3 minutes to open the box and insert your drive into the enclosure. The enclosure comes with 2 screws to fasten your drive in the back as well. Comes with two USB cables for power and data transmit. I have already burned DVD's/CD's with no problems at all. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate RC1, no need to install drivers, the OS recognized the DVD drive automatically when plugged in via USB. You can read CD/DVDs with only one USB plugged in as well. To be safe I plugged in both USBs when I burned a DVD.
5 Stars! Highly recommend using this approach if you have a laptop dvd drive lying around. A whole external DVD drive can be pricey, and this solution is super cheap.

(More customer reviews)I removed my optical drive in my Mid 2010 MBP for a second HD,
but I still wanted to use my optical drive when needed
so I looked for an enclosure to work with.
I searched long and hard for a good optical drive
but cheap.
I finally decided on this
and to my surprise,
it works perfectly.
The enclosure may be a "little" bigger than the MBP internal optical drive
but there's solution to work around it.
What I did was stuff anti-static covers to stabilize the optical drive.
To me,
it works
as it helps stabilize the drive,
provide anti-static protection against the drive
and it also looks "cool"
(The item comes with two usb cords,
one to connect the dvd drive
and the other to power the drive.
What I've found out is that the connecting usb drive alone
is enough power to power the entire dvd drive.
No need for the second "power" usb.)
All in all,
its a steal.
I'm one happy customer.

(More customer reviews)I bought this to house my internal Lenovo Multi III DVD/RW (Panasonic UJ890). It couldn't be recognized when connecting through USB ports of my Thinkpad, or another desktop. However, if I put my blu-ray player (Panasonic UJ240) in this enclosure, then it's recognized and working!! My other external encloser is from JacobsParts, and it works for both blu-ray/DVD-RW drive and DVD/RW drive.
So it's quite weird for me. This just might be that I have a (semi) bad enclosure circuit board. But for now I'll just swap my existing enclosure and use this to house my blu-ray burner/player (Panasonic UJ240).
Will provide update after extensive use and see if it holds up.

(More customer reviews)I recently got a new netbook and of course I needed a dvd burner to make the recovery disks so I could remove the factory VISTA and put on Windows 7.
Well since I had a laptop dvdrw in a box all I needed was the enclosure for it. This fit the bill nicely, works great and luv the soft feel on the outside.
Seems to work best if I plug in the usb power cable first then the usb data cable last. NO regrets.
