(More customer reviews)This little enclosure is great. I had a 2005 vinatage laptop that died and I pulled the DVD optical drive from it before I recycled it. This enclosure came with the screws and a new tray face plate that perfectly replaced my old face plate. Once I could see the new face plate, it was not to hard to figure out what tabs to push so the old one snapped off and the new one snapped on. This enclosure is for the older IDE slim optical drives, not the newer Sata drives.

Some of the user reviews fussed about a loud fan or problems with screws, etc. After reading those, when I opened the package from Amazon I was pleasantly surprised to find a nice looking unit with a little heft to it and case that looked well made.
I slipped in a good Plextor DVD burner that I had salvaged from a computer I had just scrapped,screwed the face plate on the enclosure and plugged in two cables and the power adapter and hooked it up to a USB port on my Asus eeePC netbook.
It immediately read a CD and then played a DVD movie without any problems and with no further tinkering and without needing the tiny "user manual" leaflet that came in the package. Drivers included on a mini-CD are for Windows 98SE and are not needed with Windows 2000/ME/XP.
Fan noise? In the unit I received it was virtually non-existent. Since the unit cost just enough to qualify for Amazon's Super Saver shipping, I paid no shipping charges. I'm extremely pleased with both the price and the value of this drive. I don't expect it to have hard use, and I won't travel with it, so I see no reason why I shouldn't be using it for a long time. A good cheap drive, a good cheap little baby computer -- good deal.

(More customer reviews)This works perfectly with my old laptop DVD-RW drive. It seriously takes 3 minutes to open the box and insert your drive into the enclosure. The enclosure comes with 2 screws to fasten your drive in the back as well. Comes with two USB cables for power and data transmit. I have already burned DVD's/CD's with no problems at all. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate RC1, no need to install drivers, the OS recognized the DVD drive automatically when plugged in via USB. You can read CD/DVDs with only one USB plugged in as well. To be safe I plugged in both USBs when I burned a DVD.
5 Stars! Highly recommend using this approach if you have a laptop dvd drive lying around. A whole external DVD drive can be pricey, and this solution is super cheap.

but I still wanted to use my optical drive when needed
so I looked for an enclosure to work with.
I searched long and hard for a good optical drive
but cheap.
I finally decided on this
and to my surprise,
it works perfectly.
The enclosure may be a "little" bigger than the MBP internal optical drive
but there's solution to work around it.
What I did was stuff anti-static covers to stabilize the optical drive.
To me,
it works
as it helps stabilize the drive,
provide anti-static protection against the drive
and it also looks "cool"
(The item comes with two usb cords,
one to connect the dvd drive
and the other to power the drive.
What I've found out is that the connecting usb drive alone
is enough power to power the entire dvd drive.
No need for the second "power" usb.)
All in all,
its a steal.
I'm one happy customer.

Well since I had a laptop dvdrw in a box all I needed was the enclosure for it. This fit the bill nicely, works great and luv the soft feel on the outside.
Seems to work best if I plug in the usb power cable first then the usb data cable last. NO regrets.
