BUT, the case is TOO small for the player and the power cord needed to charge battery for the player if you go on an extended trip (which we wanted it for in the first place). If you want to carry the player, the power-cord, and a few DVDs in their original cases you will need to find something larger. It would have been helpful if the case advertisement had the dimensions of the case so the consumer could verify that their machine would fit and not rely solely on the seller's title for the product.

(More customer reviews)This is great for the money. I would actually give it 4 1/2 stars. The 1/2 star deducted, because the tray door popped off when I took it out of the package. However, I was able to pop it back into place. It seems like it sticks a little bit when I push the tray back in, but other than that it reads CD's perfectly and it's only a very minor imperfection.
I was very close to returning this CD-ROM, because my netbook wouldn't recognize it in any of the USB ports. If this happens to you, just have the CD-ROM plugged into your netbook before you turn the netbook on. After I did that it recognized the drive and played all CD's with no problem.
If you're buying this to install and OS or any kind of MS software onto your netbook, be advised that most of their software is on a DVD-ROM disc.

The USB cable is short and fixed, not removable or retractable, making it tough to store for travel without damaging it. It's operation is noisy and vibrates my entire desk. I would expect the device to work with other computers (at least Apple ones) other than the air and mini but it doesn't. I would also expect the device to be updated with new technologies like Bluray but it's not. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my MBAir!! And I do like that this drive is USB powered. I would simply ask that Apple finish the job by pairing it with something equally as impressive in the superdrive. This product is just not up to Apple's par!

(More customer reviews)This external hard drive is smaller than it looks in the pictures. It can even fit in most pockets! It works well as it's marketed: as an AV storage device connected to a device in your home entertainment system such as to a PS3 or Blu-Ray player (check the compatibility list). Naturally, it can be used as a normal external hard drive connected to your laptop or desktop computer as well.
One questions I had was whether or not this can work with a TiVo to add more storage, it unfortunately cannot since the TiVo requires an E-SATA interface and this drive uses USB 2.0.
One thing that's nice about this is that it requires no external power source, it gets power from the USB. It also runs very cool so there is no fear of it overheating or adding additional heat when inside of an entertainment cabinet.
The sleek design makes it nice for traveling as well. It also comes with a stand to hold the drive vertically if you want.
If you need more storage for your media center, and have a supported device that you want to connect this hard drive to, I can recommend this Western Digital.

It works with a decent signal level located inside a cabinet on the south wall of my house, picking up sufficient signal levels through the cabinet and the outside wall of my house!!! This must be emphasized because, these days, we tend to assume that what we used to call the 'CD drive' would allow us to watch movies on our computers. It is not the case with this device which is solely a CD-ROM drive. It will play music off your CDs and it will read any files stored on CDs but it will NOT recognize the DVD format.
As a CD drive, it performed flawlessly when connected through the USB port on my Vista machine.
You will find the following in the box:
- the CD drive itself
- USB cable to connect to computer
- cable to connect to external power supply (not needed and external power supply is not provided)
- mini CD disk with drivers (not needed in my case)
- 3-paragraph 'manual'
Worth mentioning:
- drive is very slim - 1/4"
- on my Vista laptop installation was automatic and the drive was recognized immediately
- a USB 2.0 port appears to provide all the power the drive may need
- a second 'power cable' is provided for just in case your USB interface can't provide sufficient power but there is no power supply

(More customer reviews)I got my Micca Slim about a week ago and felt really compelled to write a review for this awesome gadget. HDD media players have been around a while but they have not been all that popular, most people bump into them while looking for an external HDD enclosure. Recently, HDD media players have gotten pretty powerful and newer models like the Micca is even equipped with an HDMI output.
The Micca's build quality is decent. The center frame is made from translucent purple plastic, and the top/bottom plates are made from black anodized brushed aluminum, which should be much better in terms of cooling than all-plastic enclosures. The main board spans the entire internal dimension of the player, and the HDD sits right against the main board. The whole assembly is held together with only 2 screws, but everything feels solid and flex/rattle free. Even with a 500GB HDD installed, the player is very light and feels like it's half empty. All of the player's connectors are on one end and the IR remote sensor is on the other end - a very logical layout that helps keep everything tidy and neat.
In my opinion, the HDMI is the "killer app" feature for HDD players because even though there are PMPs like Archos and various iPods with AV-out, they only have a composite video output, rendering whatever high quality video you may have essentially pointless. Having a built-in LCD sounds nice on paper but no one realizes just how silly a 4" or smaller screen is until they try to watch something longer than 10 minutes on one. I used to have an Archos 605, which has one of the biggest and nicest LCDs ever built into a PMP, but most of the time I was wishing that I could output the video onto a larger display like a TV or computer monitor while retaining the quality. The HDMI connection on the Micca allows this while also providing the added convenience of carrying both audio and video on one cable.
Also, due to the poor codec compatibility of the Archos 605 I owned, which is a common affliction of PMPs, I constantly had to recode videos just so they would play, which meant keeping two copies of the same video. In all it was just not an elegant solution.
My experience with the Micca Slim has been just the opposite. It handles just about all of my videos coded for playback on my notebook without issues. Other than a few H.264 videos, I didn't have to recode the videos for them to playback on the Micca Slim. And the playback quality was at least as good as from my notebook computer. So now I only have to keep one copy of videos on the Micca Slim, which can then be played back any which way I want. My coworkers gave me a blank stare when I showed them the Micca Slim, one remarked "this doesn't have a screen." But their faces lit up when I connected it to my 20" work monitor and they saw the quality of the playback. "Try that with your iPod Touch."
In the end, it's not just that the Micca does all these things, but that it does them so easily and unobtrusively. I need a portable hard disk drive anyway, and I need a large one to hold all of my media files. So a portable HDD that also plays back all of the media files stored on it is just such a natural function to have.

(More customer reviews)The pocket cdr's are becoming more and more popular lately with some digital camera's now using them. Personally, however, I've found that they work great in normal cd burners and come in handy for use with larger presentations (particularly powerpoint) that you'd have to waste a whole normal size CDR to burn or take the risk of saving to a Zip disk and then not have any means to retrieve it. I've also found they come in handy for resumes as they give you a somewhat more professional look. The only downside I can find with the pocket Cd is that they aren't recommended for front loading drives and some cd-roms seem to take forever to recognize the disk. Otherwise, they're fantastic for personal use and to back up some of the smaller, more personal documents on your pc.

To attain that size and weight it unfortunately doesn't have a CD drive to enter new programs onto the computer. Staples and other office stores only carried the expensive $80 range CD/DVD/writable, etc. - much more than I need just to put in a program. This small, efficient CD drive was just plug and play easy. And all of this for under $10.!!! Unbelievable! The shipping charge was almost more than the CD drive - still a great deal. What a buy! Good quality and came with all the needed cables. I can't be happier with my purchase.

(More customer reviews)Before buying this item, I carefully went over the previous review, and decided to give it a try. I was happy to see that the negative issues listed in that review had not only been addressed, but resolved. The "yellow" port seen on the picture was not actually on the player as stated in the review, but the new instructions show exactly where to plug everything. The LG external came with an installation cd, as well as being a "plug and play" item. The directions were well written, and easy to follow. I was able to view dvds within minutes of opening the package, and my crappy old computer had no issues with this hardware whatsoever. I'm on windows xp, which seems to take issues with everything, LOL, but not this item. While you can just "plug and play", after installing the programs on the cd you are given several desktop shortcuts to access exactly what you are trying to do (i.e. burn a cd, burn a dvd), and the directions are step by step from there.
This item is well worth the money, and its quality would be worth even more. I highly recommend this external!
