(More customer reviews)Ya get what you pay for... I bought this optical drive to input data into my netbook that does not have a CD drive. I keep my music on the netbook and want to rip CDs into iTunes. The drive comes in a box with two cables, a micro "USB driver" CD and a tiny card (written in Chinese and improper English)that is called a "manual." I tried following the instructions in the manual to set the unit up for use and it was impossible to do so. The manual has nothing to do with installation of this devise. After a couple hours of trial and error, I wrote Amazon and asked if there might be a website where I could download a correct driver. They sent back a form email about reading the manual and contacting the manufacturer. I laughed. Not only is the "manual" useless but there is NO manufacturer's name on the unit or in the manual. Since I am dedicated to adding to my iTunes music catalog, I went back to the task of making the drive usable. After another hour or two Windows miraculously found a driver on the micro CD (No, I do not know how it happened, it just did.)and installed it. Encouraged, I used trial and error to find the correct cable to use (of the two sent)and plugged the USB cable directly into the USB port (without using a port expander)and the drive works! I have now ripped 75 CDs into iTunes and am a happy camper. If you have the time to mess around with installation, this drive provides basic service. If your time is precious, spend more money for a drive from a solid manufacturer.

Other than that it is what is says it is: a pretty slim CD Burner. And I like the matte non-glossy finish, it's easy on the eyes and does not get dirty w. smudges. Quality is pretty decent for a cheap external drive.

(More customer reviews)This is great for the money. I would actually give it 4 1/2 stars. The 1/2 star deducted, because the tray door popped off when I took it out of the package. However, I was able to pop it back into place. It seems like it sticks a little bit when I push the tray back in, but other than that it reads CD's perfectly and it's only a very minor imperfection.
I was very close to returning this CD-ROM, because my netbook wouldn't recognize it in any of the USB ports. If this happens to you, just have the CD-ROM plugged into your netbook before you turn the netbook on. After I did that it recognized the drive and played all CD's with no problem.
If you're buying this to install and OS or any kind of MS software onto your netbook, be advised that most of their software is on a DVD-ROM disc.

(More customer reviews)I've always wanted to buy a external DVD-ROM for my netbook. After comparing several different models, I finally picked this one for two reasons:
1. It's a well-established brand name.
2. At this price, it's a steal. This is the least expensive one I have found on amazon.com and elsewhere. There are some OEM ones out there that are even more expensive than this one.
It turned out that I made a good choice. This drive is almost identical to other ones you may see, like HP, Targus and etc., it's easy to use, no software needed, plug it into your computer's USB drive, it's all set to go. I have used it for DVDs, DVD-Rs, they all worked flawlessly. It gets a little warm and noisy after a while, but all other ones I have tried do the same too. The only complaint I have is its blister packaging, hard to open.
The bottom line is, if you are looking for a DVD-ROM, meaning read-only, you cannot use it to burn DVDs, get it now before the price goes up.

(More customer reviews)This must be emphasized because, these days, we tend to assume that what we used to call the 'CD drive' would allow us to watch movies on our computers. It is not the case with this device which is solely a CD-ROM drive. It will play music off your CDs and it will read any files stored on CDs but it will NOT recognize the DVD format.
As a CD drive, it performed flawlessly when connected through the USB port on my Vista machine.
You will find the following in the box:
- the CD drive itself
- USB cable to connect to computer
- cable to connect to external power supply (not needed and external power supply is not provided)
- mini CD disk with drivers (not needed in my case)
- 3-paragraph 'manual'
Worth mentioning:
- drive is very slim - 1/4"
- on my Vista laptop installation was automatic and the drive was recognized immediately
- a USB 2.0 port appears to provide all the power the drive may need
Within the context of this being a CD drive I am going to subtract one star for the 'for ASUS EEE PC' claim. This will work on an ASUS machine but it will work on ANY computer running XP or Vista so calling it 'for ASUS' is only marketing hype that may blind potential customer into assuming (see above) that they are getting a DVD drive with the purchase.

My computer wouldn't read the CD that came with the product because there was no driver. The instructions provided with the product were unclear. (More customer reviews)i bought this to replace another external drive that was only a dvr (i needed a cd/cdrw/dvd). i opened my very carefully wrapped and packaged drive and was pleased to see that it stated cd/cdrw/dvd right on the front of it! i was unsure of the 2 cords as well, but i plugged them both into my dell netbook, and it worked right away. the only thing i don't like is that when you eject, you have to kind of pull the tray out. it also seems just a tad sensitive if you touch it while it's working. other than that, a great deal and good product!

So i took the chance and behold it worked wonderfully. I have a Hp 1116nr netbook, i plug the 2 usb cable in and poped Win Xp into the drive 1st boot up i was installing windows. I would recommend this to anyone with a type of netbook. If you useing it to install windows like i was, just make sure you know how to set the boot up for cd-rom. The only down side is it uses up 2 usb ports. 1 for power and other for drive, other then that it worked great.

Sabrent SATA CD/DVD/RW USB 2.0 Slim Notebook Drive Enclosure EC-BSAT (CD/DVD burner not Included) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this to house my internal Lenovo Multi III DVD/RW (Panasonic UJ890). It couldn't be recognized when connecting through USB ports of my Thinkpad, or another desktop. However, if I put my blu-ray player (Panasonic UJ240) in this enclosure, then it's recognized and working!! My other external encloser is from JacobsParts, and it works for both blu-ray/DVD-RW drive and DVD/RW drive.
So it's quite weird for me. This just might be that I have a (semi) bad enclosure circuit board. But for now I'll just swap my existing enclosure and use this to house my blu-ray burner/player (Panasonic UJ240).
Will provide update after extensive use and see if it holds up.
